To be honest, I'm sceptical that we were close to signing him, but for arguments sake if we had signed him would he have featured much or been stuck on the bench? We all know with Dyche there is a well established pecking order, hard to imagine a young player like Maddison coming straight into the starting XI no matter how good they are.SGr wrote:I pray that’s not true. He would surely have featured, young player he might be but too good for Dyche to bench - would be integral to the side.jrgbfc wrote:To be honest, I'm sceptical that we were close to signing him, but for arguments sake if we had signed him would he have featured much or been stuck on the bench? Re: Realistic January wish list and rumours.
I don't know the player, so he might be okay or a potential world beater, but on the face of it I would prefer us to test the waters for Sinkgraven.Mayoclaret wrote:Irish Sunday people saying we are in for Maxime Poundje 26, left back at Bordeaux, along with Fulham and Newcastle. Have had him watched in last few weeks apparently.
But will he provide his own yellow training bib?
Prior to his left back transition he played as an attacking midfielder and as an energetic box to box midfielder. So he could fill the left back slot and provide us with a number of midfield options. By signing him we could tick more than one box in terms of our our potential needs.
Poundje has only just signed a new contract and he is on the Bordeaux books until 2021. Transfermarkt estimates his value at 4.5 million, which can be taken with a pinch of salt. Bordeaux only have two left backs on their books at the moment and a couple of right backs - one on loan. Taking everything into account I think it is safe to say that Poundje will command a very sizeable fee and Bordeaux might not even want to sell him.
Sinkgraven offers far more playing options, he is 3 years younger and in the latter stages of his current contract. Wober and Tagliafico are ahead of him in the left back pecking order and Ajax also have Bakker coming through. He won't be replacing Jong, Beek or Gravenberch in their central midfield, Tadik or Labtad in the attacking third and they are well stocked with options for the wings. Its hard to see where he fits in at Ajax now, other than as a bench player, so I think Daley would be a much cheaper option and an all round better buy for us.
If Newcastle and Fulham are actually interested in Poundje we would be wise to go in early for Sinkgraven, letting the pair of them fight it out for him. If he is looking for more playing time we would also stand out as a better option than both of those clubs, because we could offer him opportunities in midfield as well as the left back slot.
Edit: Oops, forgot to include Ziyech in the players ahead of him. The guy that Ajax nicked off us, grumble, grumble.

Re: Realistic January wish list and rumours.
Hands up, I did read it as a suggestion that we should be looking at signing Doucoure, or certainly a player in the same sort of bracket (i.e. having both the attributes, and the track record). If that wasn't correct, then apologies.arise_sir_charge wrote:It’s quite clear what was meant with someone like Doucoure, a player in that style.
I’m also certain that spice thought he meant Doucoure hence his realism comment.
It’s petty stuff like this that spoil this board at times.
But - for every player like Doucoure that is plucked from the European leagues and makes it, there's probably at least 2 who doesn't. There's another thread today about Leroy Fer, who is in much the same mould but has an altogether patchier CV. Grosicki, who we were once linked with, flickered briefly at Hull after moving from French football but hasn't really pulled up any trees since. It's no given that they are successful in English football. So focusing on Doucoure, who has been a successful "pick", is a tad misleading.

Ready made CMs who could improve our options in midfield
Danny Drinkwater - Heard we were monitoring him the summer before Leicester won the league. They had signed quite a few CMs and if he was on the bench for the opening day of the season we were going to bid, but he started and played a key role in their success that season. 28.
James McCarthy - not getting much game time at Everton. Still only 28
Joe Allen - Box to Box, all action. Also 28
Lerroy Fer - Strong & Powerful. Also 28
Morgan Schniederlin - Seems out of favour. Would provide a good shield for the defence. 29
James Ward-Prowse - Hardly featured this season. Linked in the summer. If available then we should go for him. 24
Wingers/forwards
Victor Moses - Maybe a loan signing
James Forrest - Looked impressive whenever I've seen him. 27, ripe for a move to the PL for the challenge
Jarrod Bowen - Impressive for hull in last 18 months. 21.
Bradley Dack - Genuinely looks a decent player. Added bonus it would be funny taking best player from our rivals and without they may be dragged into a relegation battle again. age irrelevant.
Striker
Wayne Rooney - MLS season done. Get him in on loan for a few months. Probably not what we need, but could provide an Ian Wright type effect.
Neal Maupay - googled top scorer in the championship. 21, why not.
Sean Maguire (PNE) - Think he looks a good player.

Re: Realistic January wish list and rumours.
Ward-Prowse would be a great signing for us, although I can’t see Saints selling to a relegation rival.
Drinkwaters wages would be far too high for us to entertain, I’d imagine he’d move on to a Fulham/Everton type side.
The one on the list that I’d expect to be linked with us is Joe Allen, he would improve our midfield but I’m not convinced that he’s the type we require.
Jarrad Bowen would also be a yes from me. Offers a goal scoring threat and is relatively young, playing in a struggling team and still doing well

Bowen is the most realistic, probably followed by Fer (personally I think he’s way below our current standard)
JWP would be good but expect there’d be very stiff competition

Re: Realistic January wish list and rumours.
None of the midfielders mentioned would be cheap and with the exception of Ward-Prowse they are all getting on a bit.Sleeping Cat wrote:I posted basically the same post a while back on a different thread, so it's a re-issue with a few additional names added/removed.
At this point in the season if we are considering substantial transfer fees and long term contracts we need lads that can put in dependable performances and Leroy Fer can't offer us that. He is no better than the players we have and even though he is in the last year of his contract he would still cost us quite a bit.
I would prefer to see Hendrick play more in central midfield, the lad has done more than enough to earn it.
Jarrod Bowen is a good shout, but he is on a long contract and I can't see Hull letting him leave for anything other than silly money. If he is available I would expect competition for his signature that could jack up his price considerably. He also plays on the right and I think the left is the side we need to address. One for the January window maybe.
A cheaper alternative for a pacey left winger, who doesn't offer the defensive input we have come to expect, might be Jordan Jones. His time at Middlesborough with Gibson could work to our advantage if we are interested in him. I would still prefer Zuber as a left wing utility option though. The pace of Jones would be welcome, but a more rounded player should be higher on our list of requirements.
Playing ability aside, Bradley Dack fails all the personality requirements. The guy is a complete cock.
Rooney is an interesting one, but he might want to put his feet up in the MLS off season.
Brentford aren't far off the relegation zone, so they would want a nose bleed offer to let Maupay go on the basis that losing him would diminish their survival chances.
I'm not sure if Maguire is ready to step up and his ongoing hamstring problems are a bit of a worry.
Lawrence Shankland was a forward mention earlier and he is an interesting prospect. He would be my pick for the player that Rigg was supposedly watching on Saturday.
Some good picks though Cat.

I heard that Fleetwood have a central midfielder who fits the bill for what we're looking for, his name is Dean Marney. Name sounds familiar from somewhere...

There is no way that Sturridge will leave Liverpool for anyone. He is looking at winning the premier league this season. Fuchs on loan perhaps
James, no always injured.
Darien Silva will be one of those leaving after being frozen out by Puel. Not suggesting we go for him, I think he’ll leave the premier league .
Can’t see any other players leaving from Leicester, Diabate the winger may be the only other they allow to leave, possibly on loan if they do.

With Gomez out injured at Liverpool and Moreno unhappy I’m not sure Clyne will be allowed to leave in this window. McCarthy would be a waste in my eyes as he won’t be fit. Is Jay really what we need? I’d prefer a striker who was much quicker, but I do agree he is better than what we currently have. Wild card wide player from Riggs box of tricks?

I'm sure Mo Farah would be willing to sign. He's a willing runner and would be cheap.
