Draw is 19th June.
3rd round draw 23rd July.
We’ll know our opponents for the third round before we kick a ball.

Re: Europa at short notice ..
Don’t know the exact dates but the OP is about right in terms of when we will find out who we are playing - we do have short notice.
The draw is on the 19th June for the 1st and 2nd round including when we are home and away I think. So we will know which one of 2 teams we will play but not which one till the first round winner is decided

Not sure that’s right - won’t we know the 2 teams who play each other with us due to play the winner (if we win our 2nd round game) ?UpTheClaretsFCBK wrote:Draw is 19th June.

Re: Europa at short notice ..
Only at the conclusion of the 1st round ties on 19th July will we know our opponents and we will then only have a maximum of 2 weeks before our away leg (2nd August) or just 1 week if we're away in the 1st leg (26th July). No time at all to sort out tickets and transport etc.

Potentially selling 1000's of tickets using our 'loyalty' scheme in just a few days (as posting won't be possible)? I'm sure they and the ticketing system will cope admirably.Bordeauxclaret wrote:I’m sure the people in charge of our Ticket Office will have it all in hand.

Re: Europa at short notice ..
So our only hope of having games where we could plan in advance and hopefully get cheaper flights/accommodation would be if we get to the group stage?Leisure wrote:Only at the conclusion of the 1st round ties on 19th July will we know our opponents and we will then only have a maximum of 2 weeks before our away leg (2nd August) or just 1 week if we're away in the 1st leg (26th July). I've put the family on warning though that I might have to nip out to "the shops" for a couple of days in the middle of the holiday.
Ideal scenario for me is that we are away in the first leg of the second round - hopefully in Ireland. And then we play Bordeaux in the first leg of the 3rd round !!

Re: Europa at short notice ..
If we get through the qualifying rounds do we go into the play off round or straight into the group stage?
Re: Europa at short notice ..
There are loads of clubs who come in at the second qualifying stage; we could draw one of them meaning we'd know a month in advance. If we draw a winner from the first qualifying round we won't know till a week before. That's the way i understand it but i could be wrong.

Re: Europa at short notice ..
If Wikipedia is right about teams already qualified we could be drawn with Olympiakos or Strum Gratz if we beat our first opposition.

I know the feeling Lancaster, I was on a f**king cruise on the day of our 2009 play off final and it was a 'sea day'Lancasterclaret wrote:I'm on a cruise.
A f**king cruise, the only time we get to Europe in my lifetime and I'm at sea.

Re: Europa at short notice ..
So roughly 50:50 whether or not we will know the second round opponents before the conclusion of the first round games. (Assuming there are no weird rules around seedings or anything.)
EDIT: Just saw In the qualifying rounds and the play-off round, teams are divided into seeded and unseeded teams based on their 2018 UEFA club coefficients,[14] and then drawn into two-legged home-and-away ties. Teams from the same association cannot be drawn against each other.
Looks like our co-efficient will be ~ 5, not sure whether that will put us in the unseeded section (where we'll probably be playing another team entering at the 2nd round) but I suspect we'll be seeded looking at some of the other co-efficients.

Re: Europa at short notice ..
The high likelihood is that we'll be a seeded team for the 2nd qualifying round meaning we will have to wait till the 19th July to see who we play from the 1st qualifying round.
Re: Europa at short notice ..
Just been looking at last year's draw and looks like all the teams which entered at the 2nd round stage played a qualifier from the 1st round. Don't know if that was by chance or design.aggi wrote:So roughly 50:50 whether or not we will know the second round opponents before the conclusion of the first round games. Correction - Just seen that 2 teams entering at the 2nd round stage did get drawn together but the chances of this happening is slim.

Re: Europa at short notice ..
I thought there were some rules around seedings based on the countries coefficients etc
I've just been looking at some of the bigger leagues - french, spanish, Italian, Portugal and German - and there are some potential big teams joining the 2nd round with us...but not sure we can play them if there are seeding rules in place.

Re: Europa at short notice ..
How does seeding work for the rounds? Are we one of the highest seeds because we're an English club? so we'll get drawn against the weaker non seeded teams in all of the rounds (including the final qualification game?). The playoff round is the final qualification game, correct? so there are 4 rounds of qualifying (8 games). Last years playoff round there was some very good teams in there, Milan, Everton, Zenit, Athletic Bilbao, Ajax, Fenerbahce are we likely to avoid similar sides due to seeding?
Re: Europa at short notice ..
I think we're likely to be seeded for rounds 2 and 3, but if we make it to the playoff we might be struggling. So getting to the group stage is far from the formality some people seem to think it will be. Could end up playing Sevilla, for example.
Re: Europa at short notice ..
We will be unseeded for the playoffs? meaning we're likely to play a loser from the Champions League playoff round? is that how it works? Do the Champions League teams who fail to qualify even get dropped into Europa League qualifying?jrgbfc wrote:I think we're likely to be seeded for rounds 2 and 3, but if we make it to the playoff we might be struggling. Re: Europa at short notice ..
Seedings are determined by a club coefficient. It’s calculated through how well you’ve done in European competitions over the past 5 years (which for us is 0) OR 20% of your national coefficient, which ever is highest. 20% of England’s national coefficient currently is 15.921 (this could increase slightly more if Liverpool win CL). This number certainly guarantees us to be a seeded team in both 2nd and 3rd qualifying round, and very likely to be seeded in the play-off round aswell.
In this year’s play-off round, Partizan Belgrade were the seeded team with the lowest coefficient of 16.075 (very similar to our coefficient). However, there has been a change in ruling for the 2018/19 campaign which makes it almost a certainty we’ll be seeded in every qualifying round. Previously, coefficients were calculated through how well you’ve done in Europe over the past 5 years PLUS 20% of your national efficient, whereas they’ve changed it now for next season as it which ever is highest, meaning that most teams coefficients will be much lower, being beneficial to us.
I hope that makes sense haha.

Re: Europa at short notice ..
We have a coefficient of 15.921 but that will increase if Liverpool win the Chanpions League. We have the England average or our own (zero) whichever is higher.
I started a spreadsheet today seeing as I was not working, to show who will be seeded above us, but most leagues finish this weekend with a lot to be decided, so I have decided to hold off until next week.
I currently expect us to be seeded in the Q2 and Q3 phases, but not to be seeded in Q4 (the play off round) where only 12 end up going through into the group stages (from the league path). That will thus be the big game if we make it, and Sod’s law, I am away in Portugal. I suspect I may be quoting Captain Oates to my family “I am just going outside, I may be some time”.
