Cricket in a nutshell.
Bats really well all yesterday, scoring 120odd against the swinging ball and then chips a tame 75mph half volley to cover.

Itd be nice if his home town did something to recognise his achievements.Vino blanco wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 2:35 pmHow good is Jimmy Anderson still? Another fivefer at Lords against a good batting team. He should get a knighthood whilst he is still playing, in my opinion, to reflect his immense contribution to English cricket.
Sir Jimmy would be ok as long as he has no plans to go into kids TV when he retiresVino blanco wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 2:35 pmHow good is Jimmy Anderson still? I've watched it a few times. It does absolutely nothing. Hameed just got it horribly wrong.
Yep, it was bad from Hameed but can at least be put down to nerves.Vanders1994 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 4:14 pmWhilst Hameed got it horribly wrong, surely Sibley has to be under intense pressure now he shouldn't bat for an hour and then give his wicket away like that
I'd agree the problem also comes who else can replace sibley I can't think of anyone in county cricket who is making a solid case to replace himBordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 4:16 pmYep, it was bad from Hameed but can at least be put down to nerves.
Sibley looks a million miles away, in technique and ability.
Me either. A lad at Sussex called Haines seems to get a lot of runs but I’ve never seen him play.Vanders1994 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 4:23 pmI'd agree the problem also comes who else can replace sibley I can't think of anyone in county cricket who is making a solid case to replace him
I thought my remark about Anderson’s legs going 9 years ago would have been seen an obvious dig at our fans who claim that our player’s legs go at 30. Clearly not
Same could be said of the Indian players.onewillieirvine wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 4:31 pmOne of the problems is there's no red ball cricket played through the summer, no chance for any of this lot to run into any form.
As the openers play so defensive, the Indian bowlers can just run up and bowl where they like.Vanders1994 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 4:23 pmI'd agree the problem also comes who else can replace sibley I can't think of anyone in county cricket who is making a solid case to replace him
They’ve tried the quick scoring opener before with Roy and hales - both were ****. Sibley has the right mindset for opening the batting of getting through the new ball. However, his technique is just so weird he can’t then score off a bad ball when it comes unless it is down the leg side. Burns is quite good I think seems to get a few runs. Crawley I think is simply disastrous and a complete lost cause. He scored 270 odd and still averages 30. How he ever got that I don’t know but he isn’t good enough for the county championship never mind the test side. Dan Lawrence is a bit better but similar. Surely we select the players in the county championship who score the most runs - it makes sense. Don’t select bloody Crawley.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 5:04 pm
Another option is to give Sam Curran an opening spot with the intention to put pressure back on the bowlers. He can bat a bit and might spread the fields quickly.
He's not going to be in the side as a bowler once we have them all back fit but if he could open the batting and be a 6th choice bowler. Then he could be a useful addition.
We really are at desperation levels here.
I don't think there's anything wrong with playing defensively. The issue, particularly with Sibley is that he shows no intention to manoeuvre the ball and pick up singles to at least keep the scoreboard ticking.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 5:04 pmAs the openers play so defensive, the Indian bowlers can just run up and bowl where they like.
Alex Davies of Lancs averages late 40s in CC this year I think and puts pressure back on the bowler.

I'm not saying Roy is the answer but the Australian attack he was facing was the most accurate attack I have seen. They just didn't bowl bad balls, no half vollies or wide deliveries.Iloveyoubrady wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 5:18 pmThey’ve tried the quick scoring opener before with Roy and hales - both were ****. I don't disagree with you regarding the openers, you can't simply block for over after over, and how India approached it should be an object lesson, Rohit pushed the scoring rate on, while Rahul could just drop anchor and play 2nd fiddle, and then when his partner got out he took up the cudgels.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 5:53 pmI'm not saying Roy is the answer but the Australian attack he was facing was the most accurate attack I have seen. The only time we got on top of them was when Stokes unleashed.
Anyway I prefer one batter of the pair to be proactive. A bit like the Atherton Stewart combo.
Either way there's not a rash of guys waiting in the wings to step up, but surely Sibley has to be stood down, I'd persist with Burns he battled hard today, and it took a good ball to dismiss him, but Sibley tamely gifted his wicket away again, Ollie Pope might be a good option in the long term, but for this series I'm struggling to name anybody who could open for England, and that's a big worry ahead of an Ashes tour.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 9:28 pmhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/cou ... e/averages
This is where I got Davies average from. I'm not sure which is right?
Really good game so far, test cricket is great isn’t it on days like todaytiger76 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 14, 2021 1:16 pmI don't want to tempt fate, but a splendid first session by Root & Bairstow, 216-3 at lunch, Root 89, Bairstow 51, partnership currently worth 108.
More of the same this afternoon, and England really could be back in the game. Still 148 behind though, so a couple of quick wickets could quickly change things again.
Shaping up to be a good last couple of days the way it's going. However England need to still be batting at the end of today, the worry as an England fan is you always wonder if a collapse is imminent, so big session coming up this afternoon, if England can get to tea with only 4/5 down, we'll be in for a cracking 4th and 5th days.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 14, 2021 1:35 pmReally good game so far, test cricket is great isn’t it on days like today
