Just hope to God we can recruit with more success in the Championship.
Watching our repeated failures and the inevitable stagnation over the last 4 years has been painful.

We've got two players who are proven goalscorers, Max and Wout.
We've got games in hand.We are going to beat Watford and Man U and things will look alot better. UTC

I think being bottom of the league makes us even less appealing than we usually are to quality players and I'm summising that's been a major issue unfortunately. (But not the only one!)warksclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 9:14 pmYes important but when Rangers and Bournemouth can get players to sign for them instead of us then the way we go about recruitment needs a major investigation. We are light years behind even with clubs with similar finances to ours

Well I have to say if we don't get anymore signing then it's been a poor window for me. Come Thursday's press conference Sean will make all the correct noises saying he has faith in the players he has available to him.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 9:31 pmI think you don't need to continue refreshing this thread. I said ages ago I thought this was it and nothing has happened since from what I can see so with 90 mins left I think we can call it a day.
I hope the midfield repay his faith. But at this stage, I have to say I don't have the same blind faith.
I do question why it as taken us so long to find another good midfield player. Everyone know's we need one.

If this is indeed all we do this window it's beyond disappointing, however....
We can look forward to board wanting us to renew our season tickets and no doubt the OOC players being offered new deals.

I honestly used to love going to watch Burnley home and away. Was my favourite hobby. Over recent years though I do feel like I have lost my love for watching Burnley and football in general. I feel like it's more of a chore these days. I really want to get the old feeling back but I don't think that's going to happen whilst things remain as they are. The football is dire, the lack of ambition is non existent and the results are shocking. 2021 is probably the worst year I have witnessed as a Burnley fan. I was really hopeful this morning of at least two signings. It's the hope that kills you the most. Same old, different transfer window. I fear that Pace has failed Dyche this window and that relegation is upon on us this season. I really hope we can turn it around but I just can't see it. Are we still able to sign out of contract players? Clement Grenier, central midfielder who played for Lyon and Roma is out of contract. Full French international. Currently training with Lyon after leaving Rennes last summer.

I think the reason why we can't recruit players is because the kind of players we need to fit the system are not available. There is a time frame involved and we have got behind the loop.
We have competed with billionaires for 6 seasons precisely because we buy ordinary players who become outstanding in our system.
For example, Ashley Barnes ungainly and hapless looking at times is brilliant at maintaining possession not by great play but by winning free kicks being a nuisance and running down everything in the final third. You don't realise this until he isn't there and other teams just build up a momentum. Doesn't happen when every time the opposition centre half goes near him he rolls his shoulder and buys a free kick. The game stops the ball gets pumped up the pitch and the momentum of the game changes. Better players are not going to offer that no matter that they are infinitely more talented than Barnes.
Being good is not the point. The point is being good within our system.

The reality is that you used to enjoy being a team on the “up” and the excitement of aiming for, and achieving, what once seemed the unattainable goal of reaching the Premier League. Now we’ve been here a few years, punching way above our weight, the reality has dawned that this is as good as it gets.colne-claret wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 10:02 pmI honestly used to love going to watch Burnley home and away. Over ambitious with the calibre of players we were linked with Barkley, Ramsey, Origi and so on. Just not realistic.
The squad has lots of players out of contact and getting older, we should be rebuilding and blooding in affordable, younger players with the plan to profit from them. That’s how we have to do business with the budget we have
I can’t see a structure anymore.

It baffles me that most people can't see what ClaretPete is saying- our football is grim because our resources are pitiful next to other clubs, and have been for over 6 years, so we're forced to play a system that gets the most we can out of so little. Wood has overperformed for years with us because of the system. Likewise Barnes.
Pace has represented a change in what he will permit regarding transfers, but not in results.
But anyone seriously thinking that axing Dyche is any kind of solution has lost the plot. Be careful what we wish for.

Another really, really poor window in the grand scheme of things. What is galling is the fact we've (somehow) managed to sign some very exciting players in Cornet, Weghorst and Collins, and have yet failed so badly in improving the so very obviously weak midfield. We're almost jekyll and hyde in our recruitment. If only we had signed the calibre of players we have signed this season after we finished 7th. Sigh.

This is the philosophy we seemed to have up to the past two or three years, this is why the majority of the team who finished seventh cost £5 Million or less.claptrappers_union wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 10:12 pmOver ambitious with the calibre of players we were linked with Barkley, Ramsey, Origi and so on. Our plan should always be to sell a player who has outgrown us and hopefully already have a ready made replacement who has cut their teeth over the previous twelve to eighteen months. i.e. Pope and Tarkowski.
Without putting the blame on them (it's not their fault), the purchase of Stephens and the reacquisition of Lennon defies logic and this short sighted planning sees us in the state we are now.

Don't get me wrong I loved our promotion seasons. They are some of the best feelings I've had supporting Burnley but I also loved the first four seasons in the Premier league. We played some decent football and looked like we were going to be a solid mid table prem side. We always looked like a side that fought for each other. Nothing better than shithousing a scrappy 1-0 win away from home. But wheres that fight now? I've hardly seen it in the last 12 months.scouseclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 10:11 pmThe reality is that you used to enjoy being a team on the “up” and the excitement of aiming for, and achieving, what once seemed the unattainable goal of reaching the Premier League. So prior to the window opening we were led to believe that there was some money available, so we sell wood for £25m, buy weghorst for£12m, assuming there's a need and necessity to strengthen further, does anyone wish to suggest what went wrong, one reason that has already been mentioned is our position in the table, but it doesn't seem to have affected Watford for instance

Some promising signs in considering players from further afield. Players that would have definitely improved us. However, when it becomes apparent that it is not happening then we need to look lower down. The midfield is dogshit. No creativity, zero quality. It is also old and static. We get done on the counter too often and we have to sit deep. It is actually dangerous in favour of the opposition when we have a corner because we are so ******* slow. Properly tragic. I would have taken some of the midfielders from lower down in the leagues i.e. Neil, Knight, Swift. Just have some energy and dynamism. Would have been happy with Wallace wide because JBG is done.
I think the summer window was solid and in ordinary circumstances, trying would be sufficient. In current circumstances, I am not feeling very forgiving. It is ******* negligent to leave Dyche in this position. A defeat against Watford and it will be toxic and deservedly so. They can also **** off with the early bird renewals.

I assumed you meant more than the last season and a half when you said recent years. Last season I found very difficult to judge with not being at the games, it just didn't seem real watching every game from home on the TV. This season, for much of it, I thought we were playing better than the results. We should have beaten Brighton, Leeds, Everton and Leicester and we should now really be sitting in a comfortable position.colne-claret wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 10:20 pmHow is that your assumption Tony? Newcastle wasn't good enough and Leeds was worse. I mercifully couldn't attend the Huddersfield cup tie, but it is just some games that have been more although the points return is nowhere near good enough.
I also think we've made a right arse of this window. We've replaced on striker, who was having his worst spell with the club as it happens, with another. We've done nothing else and not addressed the glaring problems.
Totally agree that much of the first four seasons were outstanding, the first half of 2018/19 apart and the spell just before lockdown I thought we turned in some terrific performances.
The squad needs surgery, you'd need to be blind not to see that, and I fear this window might just have sealed our fate. I hope not but I think we all expected one or two additions.

Agree with this. Household names not our style or in our price bracket.claptrappers_union wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 10:12 pmOver ambitious with the calibre of players we were linked with Barkley, Ramsey, Origi and so on. Just not realistic.
The squad has lots of players out of contact and getting older, we should be rebuilding and blooding in affordable, younger players with the plan to profit from them. That’s how we have to do business with the budget we have
I can’t see a structure anymore.
The entire philosophy & structure was a team who was greater than the sum of its parts so it didn't matter if player we brought in were never stand out players in their own right.
We took players like Barnes, Heaton, Boyd and made them work how we needed them to for us to get the results we needed.

We saw it vs Arsenal. Sadly we didn’t have the quality to Nick the win. Hopefully WW and Cornet coming back will change that.colne-claret wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 10:24 pmDon't get me wrong I loved our promotion seasons. I've hardly seen it in the last 12 months.

My bad with the years. Lockdown feels like years so wording was badClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 10:31 pmI assumed you meant more than the last season and a half when you said recent years. Last season I found very difficult to judge with not being at the games, it just didn't seem real watching every game from home on the TV. This season, for much of it, I thought we were playing better than the results. We should have beaten Brighton, Leeds, Everton and Leicester and we should now really be sitting in a comfortable position.

Our transfer window summed up, papering over the cracks and the team held together with tape, god help us if we pick up any injuries.
