Re: ARTICLE: A Director’s Tale
I remember those days very well, it wasnt John Bond we needed it was James Bond 007, a few years later didnt Bond disguise himself as a Steward when we played Shrewsbury at there place, due to the support we took there.....what a kn0b he was, big man he thought, nearly ruined the club with his spending and bringing in ex Man City players. I shall be getting this book when it comes out, should be a good read, warts n all,

Re: ARTICLE: A Director’s Tale
I have always felt that the team that went down at the end of the 1982-83 season was relegated in part because we
had played 58 games that season with the two cup runs. We quite possibly would have stayed up if we had been knocked out
of both competitions early on. There were some really decent players in that team but by the end of the season they were worn out.

Re: ARTICLE: A Director’s Tale
That team was all but relegated long before the FA Cup got underway - after winning two and drawing one of the first three we won two of the next 18 games and by then we were in serious trouble from which we couldn't recover.BurnleyBob wrote: ↑Wed Feb 16, 2022 5:00 pmI have always felt that the team that went down at the end of the 1982-83 season was relegated in part because we

Playing most of the season with 2 midfielders at centre half and a past it Stevenson in goal were 2 of the main factors in our 1983 relegation.

Re: ARTICLE: A Director’s Tale
Stevenson was only 31/32 that season but had gone. He cost us time and again that season. Micky Phelan would have been fine at the back alongside Vince Overson but with Vince injured for virtually the whole season it was crazy to partner Micky with Dobbo in a back four, worsened with two full backs who were at their best attacking.Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Wed Feb 16, 2022 7:34 pmPlaying most of the season with 2 midfielders at centre half and a past it Stevenson in goal were 2 of the main factors in our 1983 relegation.

I can certainly recall John Bond wearing a yellow Fluoro jacket at Gay Meadow. And he wasn't sat near the bench.

Always interesting when Bond's name comes up. He's a lot of people's scapegoat for our demise in the 80's. Unfairly and unjustified I think. Looking forward to to reading this book about the club and this time in particular. My first full season watching us was the 83/84 season.

Yes but whatever is going on at a football club the manager gets it in the neck, the 1st Law of Football!

Re: ARTICLE: A Director’s Tale
You have to wonder just how on earth Benson managed to take us down when he had such as Micky Phelan, Vince Overson, Kevin Hird, Tommy Hutchison, Wayne Biggins, Alan Taylor in his squad. It led to those seven dark years at the bottom which started with the next two awful appointments Buchan and Cavanagh.RammyClaret61 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 9:14 amThe following 2 seasons were probably the worst ever. It's surprising and shocking how a bad manager can create an awful team with good players but it's evidently possible.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 10:08 amYou have to wonder just how on earth Benson managed to take us down when he had such as Micky Phelan, Vince Overson, Kevin Hird, Tommy Hutchison, Wayne Biggins, Alan Taylor in his squad. Glen Roeder managed to relegate a West Ham team with the following players at his disposal:
David James
Don Hutchinson
Lee Bowyer
Michael Carrick
Trevor Sinclair
Jermaine Defoe
Paolo Di Canio
Frederic Kanoute
Joe Cole
Glen Johnson
Anton Ferdinand
That side should have been pushing the top four but he got them sent down.

I remember the 70s vividly but my memories of 81 to 85 are shot. I was in my mid to late teens during that period, and like many others in the town had a waning interest in the club, albeit mine was an alcohol fuelled haziness until Leyton Orient when we kind of had a collective awakening. Or that's how it seemed to me.
Re: ARTICLE: A Director’s Tale
Wow they would have been great signings. I remember Bond tried to sign Alan Birch from Chesterfield, good player at that level. Chesterfield messed us around with Bond vowing never to do business with them again.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Feb 16, 2022 8:44 pmDanny Wilson (Chesterfield)

Re: ARTICLE: A Director’s Tale
He's up there with the worst. We conceded 134 league goals in his 2 seasons, though Neenan played a few games in 1984/5. The first season it was masked by the prolific Hamilton & Reeves forward line, something we didn't have in his second season. Clearly he was not the only reason - the pedestrian full back pairing of Palmer and Hampton certainly didn't help the cause any.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 1:26 pmHe’d played in the previous season though. I too am looking forward to this.
I saw a lot of matches in this period and there were some exciting times amongst a lot of doom. What of course we never really knew was what was going on in the background so this should be interesting.
It's a bit like today. People talk about the Garlic/Dyche relationship and the damage it may have caused but I hope they too have kept diaries and our esteemed author will get his hands on them in due course. I hope he doesn't wait forty years though as I'm not sure I'll be around.

Re: ARTICLE: A Director’s Tale
Just ordered this. 81/82 is my favourite ever season. Gave everyone an 8 game headstart and then lost only two games, hitting top spot right at the end. That team never knew when it was beaten and played some cracking stuff. 82/83 was so frustrating . If Overson had been fit I think we would have been top half but we gave away so many soft goals: the worst being at Carlisle. The Milk Cup campaign showed what we were capable of and we beat QPR, Fulham and Newcastle in the second half of the season as well as hitting Charlton for 7, but a five game losing streak around Easter was the killer. Bond remains one of the most disproportionately maligned figures in the club’s history.

It was good to see Mr Chairman at the launch yesterday. Hopefully, the take away for him was what this club means to so many. David Gill spoke passionately about his dad and his dad's love of the club and how this is being passed on through the generations ...like many families .

Re: ARTICLE: A Director’s Tale
Arrived this afternoon and am already about half way through 82/3. A very interesting read. A quick question as to whether anyone can confirm which match is featured in the photo on the front inside cover (apols if it appears in the text but I couldn’t see it anywhere). The best I can do is Chelsea in April ‘83. I remember they played in a pale yellow strip that day and a candidate for the player shooting is Paul Canoville, who was by far and away their best player that day, which isn’t saying much as we royally stuffed them.

Re: ARTICLE: A Director’s Tale
Ps. Just come across a very odd passage on p72 where Gill heavily criticises the tactics in the penultimate game of 82/83 at Leicester. He called it a ‘fiasco’ because Leicester were already promoted and in party mode and we didn’t go for the win. Actually Leicester only went up on that day as Fulham lost at Derby and even then had to wait to see whether the Fulham result would stand because the match at the Baseball Ground was abandoned after 88 minutes because of crowd trouble. Leicester very much needed a win. Also, the point at Leicester at least gave us a chance and it was a good battling performance. Just shows how the memory plays tricks maybe because he had to miss the Palace game because of a booked holiday.
