Yep. It's all very well selling players, but if selling a player is the difference between promotion and staying down, then that's worth like £100+ million to us. I'm sure they are aware that it's not necessarily about the fee we receive for a player. Indirectly, we can still make a loss.

Nice goal from the lad at Wembley a few months ago. He seems to be very highly thought of at RotherhamKRBFC wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 3:00 pmI like Twine, Harwood Bellis and Egan-Riley.
I'm not convinced with a 23 year old Rotherham midfielder, we need a serious improvement in that area. It surely can't all be skimp and scrape and pray it works, we need some more quality. Younger players who are most established but will cost a bit more. For a start we need a goalscorer, Piroe is 22 year old, young enough but he'll cost probably £10m-13m. I have a feeling we aren't gonna reinvest those type of fees, leave ourselves short of quality in key areas and just pray a cheap option can do something.

I'm not happy either about our plight, but if we need to service the debt, then assets will be sold, and cheaper options brought in, that's just the reality I'm afraid.KRBFC wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 3:33 pmSo we're potentially gonna lose Cornet, Pope, Collins, Weghorst and Roberts.
Muric and Harwood Bellis are loans, how do they fit the young, develop, sell strategy?
22 year old Piroe's value isn't going down unless he's a complete dud for 4 years. If he scores 20 next year, his value probably doubles. Look at Collins, he cost £12m he's now worth at least double that. If you want to make money and do well with the young, develop, sell, you have to finance it properly. The standout established youngsters in this country aren't cheap.
Do we know for certain Muric and THB are loans, rumours were we're trying to sign THB on a permanent deal.
And if Piroe is so good how come no PL clubs have leapt to sign him, or even other Championship clubs, you'd imagine someone with his record in the Championship would attract interest from higher, and if Swansea don't sell this summer he'll only have a year on his contract.
Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Come on, Twine literally carried Dons with his goals and assists. The fact that he didn't get promoted tells more about the overall quality of their squad compared to Rotherham's.
For example, Mason Holgate from Everton stayed in the league while Tarky was relegated. Does that make him a better player?

We could only hold out for more if other clubs were expressing interest, but apparently Newcastle were the only ones who wanted him, yes we could have stood our ground for more, but then we might have missed out on snapping up Twine for all we know.claretblue wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 3:41 pmseriously disagree with that tiger...could and should have stalled for more!![]()

Surely that point can be applied to lots of incoming players. And we know there's a big difference between a PL and Championship striker. Do we not sign a player on the basis that the player hasn't attracted interest from a PL club? I'm not sure that fits with the club's strategy.tiger76 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 3:41 pmAnd if Piroe is so good how come no PL clubs have leapt to sign him, or even other Championship clubs, you'd imagine someone with his record in the Championship would attract interest from higher, and if Swansea don't sell this summer he'll only have a year on his contract.

Agree to a point but, you also have to consider Pope’s wages. I was gutted to lose Pope for what I consider chicken feed for his ability; but in all honesty it was a good bit of cloth cutting business with the experience of WH (a keeper I’ve rated for a long time) waiting for his opportunity.claretblue wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 3:41 pmseriously disagree with that tiger...could and should have stalled for more!![]()

Would assume Wiles would be a depth/rotation option so wouldn't be opposed.
If I was finding fault in it I'd say that Adam Phillips, in the same position, outperformed him last season in a lesser League 1 team. So why bother spending a fee when we have the potentially better player on our books?

I mean it's a really difficult one but if selling Pope, for even a smaller fee then we all wanted, brings in 2/3 younger players that have potential to make us better in certain positions and maybe go on to make us decent profit then it's a no brainer.
Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
It was a poor bit of business if the reported fee is correct. Confident that WH will step up but that's no justification for the money we apparently received for Pope.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 3:50 pmAgree to a point but, you also have to consider Pope’s wages. Nick Pope only had another year on his contract so bloody good business at £10 million
Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
I understand the debt part, I just don't see how loans fit in with the strategy and I think the strategy is far more effective when financed properly. We bought Collins for £12m, sell him for £30m. Replace him with the next Nathan Collins, Harwood Bellis on a permanent fits the bill, someone with high potential and proven in the Championship. Dael Fry? £10m? you have £20m left over to service debt and you sell Fry in 2 years for £20m+.tiger76 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 3:41 pmI'm not happy either about our plight, but if we need to service the debt, then assets will be sold, and cheaper options brought in, that's just the reality I'm afraid.

I'm not sure selling everything that breathes for big money and replacing with loans and cheap £1m-2m players is a great strategy for anything other than severely weakening the quality of the team, reducing the wage bill and stripping all cash from the club.

Actually I apologise Piroe has been linked to both Leicester and Watford, Swansea have offered him a new deal, but he's rejected it, so it's likely he will be sold in this window, doubt he'll end up at Burnley though.taio wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 3:50 pmSurely that point can be applied to lots of incoming players. Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
I worry about his energy levels and the fact he tends to switch off when things are not going his way. We were weak down the left last season and, I firmly believe the combination of Charlie and Dwight on the left was targeted by opposition managers last season as weak defensively. He may excel at this lower level, but only if his heart is in it.
Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
The difference between Fry and Mcnally is Fry is proven at this level already so has a way higher upside, considerably more likely to win promotion. Sure Fry will cost more but that's what the strategy requires.

Any cb we bring in is going to be coached by one the top CB’s the world has seen. I’m not worried one bit about this position.

People are saying “why are we signing a player from Rotherham” but not saying “why are we signing a player from MK Dons”
Wiles himself got 8goals and 7 assists last season, so not bad stats for a midfielder.
It’s all well and good signing a potential 20+ goal scorer, but the issue we’ve often had is that we don’t have enough goals from across the rest of the team. This looks like something we are trying to rectify

Kompany has publicly stated he'll only use loans as a last resort, so we might not get any or many on loan yet.KRBFC wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 3:56 pmI understand the debt part, I just don't see how loans fit in with the strategy and I think the strategy is far more effective when financed properly. Agree with you on not selling everything, which is why I'd resist any bids for Collins, unless it really was silly money; he's someone who won't diminish in value, in fact if he was made skipper, and led us to the Championship title this season, his value would only increase.
Twine wasn't a £1-2m signing, and there does need to be a balance, but equally that doesn't mean we should pass up on any players we perceive as a potential bargain.
Impossible to fully comment on our transfer activity until the window shuts, but the early signs are showing more promise than many of our recent windows.

Collins will go for £30m and be replaced by a loan player and Mcnally (£1.5m)?
Talk of Roberts going for £10m (somehow) to be replaced by Egan Riley (400k).
Pope gone for £12m, replaced by a loan from City?
Weghorst gone on loan, replaced by a youth teamer?

Whilst one or two of our signings will work out it's fair to say that some will struggle. We have to be careful we don't sign too many cheap players.

that's thing though, if the likes of Cornet and Collins go we might have the finance to do that. At the moment, we have half a team and those two haven't been sold (and may not be). I've no idea about McNaly or the lad from Rotherham but everyone has to be given a chance in life. Look at Joel Linton, absolute laughing stock until Howe changed his position and ended up being Newcastle's player of the season.
Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Collins is the player where I would genuinely say to an interested club that unless you are offering an eye watering sum of money then forget it. I can't remember any serious club losing their three centre halves, and best outfield players, in one transfer window.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 4:13 pmI am not if Collins stays. Re: Summer 2022 Burnley Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
I didn't magic it out of thin air, I said if Collins is sold for £30m. I think for the team to remain strong and the strategy to work, part of that will have to be reinvested on a replacement. 7-10m on a replacement, the rest is banked towards debt. You then retain quality in the team to push for promotion whilst keeping the buy develop sell line active.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 4:19 pmthe difference will also be 25k per week in wages. I am sure if we get £30m for Collins that around a third of that will be reinvested.KRBFC wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 4:23 pmI didn't magic it out of thin air, I said if Collins is sold for £30m. Pope went for around £10m and by all accounts we’ve spent £5m on Twine, £400k on Egan-Riley and £1.6m on McNally - so they’ve already reinvested £7m of the Pope fee, and presumably put some towards running costs/debt/interest.
I just doubt it’ll be a Big Bang £10m player we see come in at any point because we simply have far too many players to sign such was the exodus at the end of the season, and also the likelihood of another 4, possibly 5 being sold.
