I still think we will see a centre back come in - clearly Kompany was very keen on Kouyate but that isn't looking likely if he is now playing again. It doesn't change the fact he wants one and we have already shown a willingness to shift targets.

Are we still after a striker? It's gone quiet on that Turkish lad from Brentford after looking tied on.
It was said yesterday that Dervişoğlu has other options, so has to decide.

I'd expect him to be making a decision today on where he wants to go, surely unless he wants to play in Turkey again then there won't be many Championship clubs with a bigger pull than us.

That’s great, I’m excited about this signing, he is very technical and would suit the role Jay played last night dropping deeper and linking play.

Where did you see the medical news btw?

I was told the same last night fwiw. I was told it’s “done subject to medical tomorrow”.

Have to say, I can’t get excited about it at all after the Archer/Metz guy links. :( Hope I’m proven very wrong!

His stats aren't great, but they way we play maybe perfect for him.

Hardly excites me stats wise, not a great goal scoring record in the last 3 seasons, 9 in 54 I think I read, with only 4 in 28 last season.

I was more enthused by the Archer links, 1 in 3 last season at this level in an average PNE side, and obviously has experience of the league.

Still intrigued by the " expect the unexpected " quote from Kompany, hopefully he pulls a rabbit out of the hat in terms of a goal scorer.

I think that the way we are playing and more importantly gelling, it is going to be increasingly difficult for someone to break in the starting 11, unless they bring something very special, at which point your looking at strengthening the bench, so you could argue replace Barnes/Lowton/Costello but with what we have in the squad and already signed you could also argue we have readymade replacements now, so again its going to be a struggle to break in to the bench considering those who are not making the match day squad at the moment. All good headaches to have, and I thought Egan Riley looked comfortable in the cup so wouldn't mind seeing him stepping up, not sure what McNally is like but reportedly good, and then you Have Churlinov, Twine and Zaroury, before we make any other signings. Still only 22 though

Shearer only scored 10 goals in his first 77 games for Southampton at 21yrs old
upped it to 23 in 118 by the time he was 22 and then his goalscoring took off from 93 painfully for us

So I think it's too early to judge 'Dave' as I'm going to call him cos I can't either spell or pronounce his name

At this age it's all about potential, more than achievements, and some make it and some don't.

Watching the clips of Dervisoglu, it's notable that he seems to drop deep as opposed to playing as a dedicated 9.

It's becoming clearer and clearer (especially after last night, with Rodriguez adopting a False 9 position for the majority of the game) that Kompany really doesn't see us having the usual battering ram type target up top. I know Barnes is probably past it at this level, but it could also be said that he just doesn't suit this system as he has never been one to drop deep in the way Rodriguez has always been able to do.

Think Kompany wants more ‘false 9s’ that can drop in and link play rather than lead the line.

Certainly has good stock and being capped 13 times (scoring 6 goals) by Turkey suggests he’s got the ability

I agree.

My comparison would be Danny Ings as I feel Dervişoğlu isn't an out and out number nine, although he played more as a central striker last year at Galatasaray. Ings hadn't been a goal scorer until his fired us to promotion in 2014.

Only off Youtube clips admittedly but he looks to be strong on the ball, able to take the ball on the half turn and a good dribbler, give any forward decent service and they will score, the one thing this team looks like doing is creating chances.

Sorry to detract from the thread.

Wasn't picking holes. Judging by your username and that post I may have wrongly made the assumption that you were trying to speak from a position of pretending to be in the know. Many of us are just fed up seeing those guys pop up, spout the nonsense and then go again. If I have the wrong end of the stick then I apologise. Time will tell.

Vitinho was making centre forward runs last night at times, and the ball from Muric to Tella was after Jay had pulled the centre backs wide and Tella ran into the space.

The movement is brilliant to watch.

It was.

Recall several times where we didn’t pick out Vitinho’s run quickly enough. That will come.

High time for the lad at 24/25 to move on permanently as he’s clearly never getting a look in here. Would be a good one for Duffo as he seems to be an excellent player at that level.

Obafemi would be an excellent signing but can’t see us going near the 10m asking price. Kompany said post match he won’t be doing deals where the selling club will be high fiving on the fee received, quite an interesting way of putting it.

I’ve always rated Egan - I’d be amazed if Sheff Utd were willing to sell him to a rival though (or anyone for that matter).

Jay was excellent in that last night, which freed up so much space, especially in the second half.

Jesus christ if we sign Obafemi who's a 5 foot 7 inch striker and add him to the rest of the midget squad we'll have to change the song the player's run out to, to this one.

If we're apparently close to signing this Turkish forward from Brentford then why would we be bidding for Obafemi? Can't see us wanting both but you never know.

Totally different types of player I think. The Turkish lad seems far more like Rodriguez (drops deep, false 9 sort of area, as much a creator as a goalscorer), whereas Obafemi is far more of the pace merchant type like Andre Gray/Martin Paterson were for us. The Obafemi move seems more like the 'fallback' from missing out on Jackson Muleka earlier in the window, as they share many similarities in stature and style.

I agree in some respects though - it feels more like Obafemi is what this squad needs as an option that it doesn't currently posses, whereas we seem to have a lot of alternatives already (Twine, Tella, Rodriguez, Churlinov, Benson) to the Turkish player.

Good point on Obafemi (never seen the Turkish lad play so I was unsure on his type of play), plus Zaroury can apparently play up front. Can never have too many options!

Possibly, although there's no way VK will be getting rid of Jay and I can't see there being a wealth of offers for Barnes...

We'll see.

Scratch that - you're correct, us and Bristol City have both made bids for Callum Robinson according to Sky.

Preston fans absolutely loved him.

This must be seen as an alternative to Obafemi - apparently available for £2.5m, Robinson can also play in multiple positions all across the frontline.

Burnley & Bristol City join Robinson chase
Cardiff are in talks with West Brom about signing Callum Robinson but Bristol City and Burnley have now also made approaches to West Brom.

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international was not in the squad for last night’s draw at Wigan.

He has made four appearances in the Championship this season but all from the bench.

Albion boss Steve Bruce has, meanwhile, confirmed Sky Sports News' story about them agreeing a deal to sign Salford striker Brandon Thomas-Asante.

At the DW Stadium last night he said: “It’s something that’s a possibility. He hasn’t had a medical yet.”

Good player is Robinson- always a bit of a surprise he's not stepped up to Premier League level because he has the ability and he's certainly the sort of central forward we could use. At 27 just coming into his prime and he's got bags of experience at this level and something to prove. Certainly as a plan B to Obafemi he's a good option.

Still need that centre half though.

A long way from crap at this level! Never made it in the Prem, but we can worry about that then.

He would be a great rotational option/alternative to our other strikers and I'd expect him to bag 8-12 goals in such a role.

Seems to struggle to get in WBA's team whose other strikers haven't pulled up any trees.

Happy to trust VK on any signing though.

Yeah i’m probably being a bit harsh but why would West Brom, who need a striker badly, be willing to part with him? And it appears some below average teams (Cardiff, Birmingham, Bristol City) are in for him. Obafemi is a far better profile, younger and is used to playing a possession system.
