Italy v England

Post by RVclaret » Fri Sep 23, 2022 6:32 pm

Nations league game, meaningless but need to see a good performance after that last international break disaster.

Looks like a 3-4-3. Pope getting recognition now he’s not with little old Burnley…

Glad this thread was started, I had it in mind that this game was Saturday. Better get myself organised now as I fancy watching this to compare with the last meeting between these two.

Actually quite like that team.

Chance to see the Rice - Bellingham midfield 2 which I am hoping starts at the World Cup.

Strong side on paper.

Is Pickford not injured so Popes the obvious backup.

I get the pelters Maguire is getting but he’s never played bad for England. Was he not in the team of the Euros last year.

You live in Italy don’t you? How will Italy be treating this game given they’re not going to Qatar?

Utterly bizarre that Pope gets a shout.

Is he good enough? Absolutely he’s good enough. Is he better than Pickford? No question for me he’s the better keeper. So why does JP get selected ahead of him?

We are told it’s down to his distribution. That improved SO much now he’s at Newcastle? I’d wager not. But if that’s the only difference between the two, and his distribution is so bad that GS would rather have a lesser keeper between the sticks, then Pope shouldn't play at all.

For the record, I’ve completely lost faith in Southgate. I am completely bewildered not just by his team selections, but by his tactics, and also the tripe he comes out with in the pressers. He’s as puddled as Garth Crooks.

I can’t believe Southgate gets anything other than the total backing of England fans.

We got to the semis in the last WC and the final of the last Euros. When have we ever done anything like that in the last 50 years?

Yes but arguably Ramsdale could have been next in line, he’s Arsenal’s keeper and they are currently top of the PL, interesting.

I do yeah but Naples, and they aren’t as into the national team here compared to elsewhere, so not too sure.

I’d say Pickford is GS’ number one and will be obviously in the World Cup. He’ll probably rotate all the other keepers in the next two games but it wont have any relevance to his future starting XI.

I’m sure Italy will be experimenting with a shed load of subs

Pretty straightforward really, Pickford injured.

Don't we get relegated, from whatever this is, if we lose tonight?

Pitchfork being injured leaves the decision to be made....decent keeper who can pass it around, or a keeper who will stop goals going in???

Well done Nick Pope. Best keeper in the country.

That team should cause Italy problems, glad Pope got his chance, but if Pickford is fit for the WC he'll surely be number one.

Bellingham is one talent who excites me, and he could well be a key player in the WC he's that good in my view.

You can see why he didn't bother selecting Toney in the 23.

Sterling I struggle with. He must have lost possession every time he's touched it and that isn't unusual. He probably pop up with a tap in but it's not worth it for me.

Umm not good in terms of joined up. Bellingham looks good. But needs to work it out with rice who holds and who go forwards. Back 3 look clueless.

Foden looks sharp, but after that I’m struggling to single anyone out. Ska and sterling spectators and James is just annonymous

Kane needs supply - you wont get supply from sterling , Shaka , James (though he does in Prem). Foden and Bellingham about only positives from game so far

I turned over to a different channel after 15 minutes, absolute load of rubbish. Interesting that Southgate still picks players that have been struggling for form with their respective clubs.

I just wish Southgate had a bit more ambition and trust in his team. This formation is so negative, and I don’t believe three centre backs is required. Play Walker at RWB and his pace on the recovery when out of possession can become a three.

The lack of creativity and support for Kane is so frustrating - use that third CB body to get the likes of Grealish into the side. There is nobody (bar Foden, perhaps, but he’s forced too deep in this system) willing to try and commit a defender. I’d far, far rather see an attacking England side that yes, May concede more, but will look to go for it and really hurt sides. It’s such turgid stuff to watch - and I’m a Southgate supporter due to his record with us.

He's been in management since 2006. That's 14 years ago. All of his sides have played this exact way.

1 shot on goal that half which I think was the mis-hit, speculative effort from Bellingham.
