Genuine question here. But could the declaration have the weather forecast in mind? Overcast conditions today so a good day to get the Aussies batting, as well as the potential for rain Sunday Monday?
I thought that. But wouldn't it have made more sense to let root and Robinson smash it out, and go in first thing this morning to be certain what the weather was doing. Could have declared before play started if the weather looked gloomy enough I think

Overcast conditions all day today, declaration does look to have been based on weather conditions and that's why jimmy was held back last night
I doubt that bowling 2 overs last night would have any impact on his potential performance today.

I agree, 400+ would have also had an extra psychological effect imo, the aussies will be up for it this morning, had we have got to 450 their mindset would have changed to avoid defeat rather than as it stands they will still think they can win from here, I think it's that close with 393 on the board.

Often a team trying to win is easier to beat than one settling for a draw.

Broad bowled because he gets Warner out quite often.

Robinson bowled because he seams it away from left handers.

They just didn't bowl as well as we would like. Robinson nearly got Khawaja's edge, but that should have been repeated 8 times or so.

Declaring was a big risk but test cricket can be boring when it just ends up two teams playing out a draw, trying to avoid defeat. This has livened things up so I’m all for it.

No problem with that argument, I was responding to a poster who was suggesting that Anderson didn't bowl because he was being "saved" for today.
(As if 2 overs would have taken it out of him).

I'm not trying to argue, just explaining why Stokes will have done what he did.

I joined in to get an opinion on yesterdays early declaration. I was busy all day yesterday.
Having read the previous page I’m up to date but still baffled.
This is the ultimate test match series and if you can put your boot on their neck you do. With the quicker scoring rate of modern cricket 400 is not enough, unless you know how bad batting last will be.

The Aussies are scoring at Boycott levels of 2 and half an over.

Had we taken a wicket in those overs at the end last night, people would look on it differently. We have to expect the unexpected with this team now.

Head and Khawaja settling for Australia, 47 runs from 80 balls partnership, crowd very subdued, wicket not offering much, need a spark to get things going again.

I feel we're targeting the wrong one with the short ones, khawaji is the one I think we could tuck up and get the nick off,or one up in the blockhole.

I have to say I did originally think the declaration a little premature, but like VK for BFC, Stokes has earned the right to do as he sees fit.
