Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
It's a shame we haven't been able to see Taylor in action in these preseason games so far, because it would have been interesting to see how he's been playing the left back role.
When we were linked with Coulibaly, many posters wondered if he may start at left back and hold his position in a back three out of possession like Man City do. If that were the case, you can make a case for Taylor suddenly suiting the role in a way he didn't last season.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Understandable if that's the case. He hasn't done much for them in the past but after a brilliant season for us, and given his contract, they should demand a high fee knowing if we don't meet it he could be a big asset for them in their attempt to get back to the PL. I think they should try to keep him.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2023 7:06 pmSaints fans were quite prepared to drive him up to us just to get rid

I think if we got news that Tella had been signed, the reaction would be the most positive thing we have read on this Board since the window officially opened

Desperately? Of the 17 teams who stopped up last season, only 9 had a player who scored more than 10 goals.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2023 5:22 pmI still feel we are desperately short of goals. WW, JRod, Foster, Amdouni, Obafemi, Twine, Benson, Zaroury, Redmond, JBG.
I just don’t see many goals from that collection. We desperately need a 10-15 goals/season man up top, then the man playing behind him will get more space.
The 15+ goal men were Haaland, Kane, Toney, Salah, Wilson, Rashford, Odegaard, Watkins, Martinelli. Chances are we won't get anyone of that sort of calibre.
11-14 goals were Saka, Mitrovic, Moreno, Barnes, Jesus, Foden, Firmino, Almiron. You're still talking out of our price range.
It's not to say we won't get a 10-15 goal striker, but it won't be someone we can recognise as such before the season starts.

Even the 11-14 goals names above, are a very elite band of footballers. This is why Chris Wood, until the last season with us, was so important to us. I think with Amdouni being brought in for the fee he has, it would be disappointing if he doesn't reach at least the 5 goal mark.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2023 7:43 pmMight be wrong but I think the next stat to look at is, every team that stayed up last season had at least 3 players that scored 5 goals.

Redmond appears to average just over 4 goals a PL season, so it's not really a stretch to suggest he'll reach 5 goals if played regularly.
Then there's Benson who, if he can remain injury free, should be good for a handful of goals.
Zaroury has a knack of popping up in the right place as well on the counter, something we should be doing more of next season.
I do believe we need another attacking signing though - one who you look at and immediately identify as a strong goal threat.

I agree with a lot of commentary but in relation to Redmond I just can’t see it, he’s not scored more than 4 since 2018.ksrclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2023 7:57 pmI think with Amdouni being brought in for the fee he has, it would be disappointing if he doesn't reach at least the 5 goal mark.

Wilfred Zaha from Palace to Galatasary.
On a lot less money than at Palace.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I'm not sure, personally, that more strikers is top of the priority list. We've got Weghorst, Obafemi, Foster and Amdouni, plus Jay as back up, for the central forward roles. That's 5, 3 of which have been signed either since promotion or with promotion firmly in mind in January. For the wide roles we have Benson, Zaroury, JBG,
Redmond and Twine (who I note has been written off as a wide player but as I understand it played predominantly left of a 3 for MK Dons).
That's 10 players for a maximum of 4 roles - plus the young lad we are apparently signing from Spain, and Churlinov. At some stage we have to back what we've got and go with it. It is possible we might want another but its got to be tied I think to someone leaving (either on loan or permanently) and id have thought it quite likely it'd be a loan. We will need to target 50 League goals next season and as this season we'll share around- but we have to hope that group can contribute 30 or so.
I'd have liked to see Tella back but it was always unclear we'd be able to finance the deal and our funds are not unlimited. Central midfield, and left back, are greater priorities.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Zeki is a new £15 million, young, highly rated no 9, I would hope he has the potential to score 10 a season.
If we sign tella I think he has the potential to grab at least 5.
Manuel can definitely score more than 5.
Zaroury maybe.
Weghorst, Jay rod, Foster are all forwards who definitely could score some if they play.
Zaroury will score some.
Brownhill will score a few.
Twine could score plenty if he plays regularly.
We have enough good players to have at least players with over 5 goals at the end of the season. I’m sure we will sign Tella and/or another who add to the number who potentially could bag these goals.

It's only really Chelsea where he didn't feature very much. Plenty of games at Villa and Nice, and over 30 caps for England so I'd say he's far more to offer than Drinkwater.
Probably right about Gerrard snapping him up though

I was adamant the England side should've been built around Barkley when he was coming through. He had everything. Still had a good career. Wouldn't be against him joining at all for that advanced midfielder spot.

Much like Tella was last summer.
I fancy both Foster and Weghorst to score some goals for us this coming season along with a few each from those around/behind them and Adoumi perhaps proving to be our dark horse.

It always felt strangely likely that we would be returning to Tresor to me. He was linked day one and I don't really see the signings we have made as being alternatives to him. Pace being at the Genk game was also telling...

I'm not sure that article indicates much has moved since the last time he was linked. However the timing of the article is interesting given that Alan Pace was over in Genk with the team this weekend. The two owners will no doubt have had a chat about things.

Genk play Servette tomorrow and 2nd August. If they win that tie they'll come up against Rangers with the second leg not until 15th August. If they beat Rangers, Genk's final champions league qualifying match won't be until 29th/30th August potentially against one of Braga, Marseille or PSV, around two days before the Premier League transfer deadline.
As you say, Genk losing to Servette over this next week could make things move a lot quicker if we area interested in him.
