Was chris wood under appreciated?

Looking ahead to Sundays game I get the feeling Chris wood was under appreciated by fans at our club . Too score over 10 goals a season for 4 seasons or more in a struggling side takes some doing for me .
In reality we haven’t replaced him still and that’s 2 years on .

I think he was very much so. He did a brilliant job for us and I’ll always be grateful to him for that.

Offside a lot only because he was always “on the shoulder” which is exactly where he was told to be. So no, I don’t think he was under appreciated, I think his role made people think he wasn’t quite as good as he should have been if that makes sense. Very good record for us, and I think his best football was with us.

I think Sky came up with a stat recently saying that on goals per chances he's one of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League. Bearing in mind we never had possession when he was here I can see that being true

I know people will say Austin but wood has done it at a higher level for us

He was limited but very good at what he did.

My biggest gripe with him wasn’t the off sides (he was up against quality centre halves trying to play him off side) it was his contribution during his lean patches. When he wasn’t scoring, he didn’t always appear to be doing enough for the team.

I think I’m right in saying that he tended to have purple patches followed by long ish spells without a goal. When he wasn’t scoring, it wasn’t always easy to see what he’d contributed in a game.

His drop off, final season, until he was sold was astounding. He had been very good for us up until then.

If you come across someone saying he was crap, you can pretty much dismiss anything else they've got to say.

You mean that final season in which we were relegated with a whimper, and the one where we played half the season with only 10 men?

People don’t forget when they see a player with clear ability who’s absolutely able to do a good job for you, simply down tools like he did. It affects people’s opinion because it affected us so very badly, and because the majority of fans in the stand would put more into it than he did in his last period. It’s tainted his tenure, and so it should.

Having said all that, almost unplayable at times for us.

Wasn’t it George Best who once said of another player, “he can trap it further than I can kick it”? That quote sums Andre up for me.

Brilliant when he had no time to think and was just running onto a thru ball, absolutely lethal pace and power. Passing it to him normally was like kicking a ball against an upturned trampoline.

If the first half of the season was anything to go by, I’d suggest he wouldn’t have scored anywhere near enough to keep us up. Newcastle clearly thought they’d weakened us with that business… they hadn’t done their homework.

When he hit a purple patch he was superb and up there as one of the most effective in the league. For a lot of the time though he could be incredibly frustrating.

My overriding thought what’s that when he was on form, his conversion rate to chances was superb. The season him, Barnes and J-Rod were on fire they all were ridiculously efficient.

As has also been mentioned, the season he went off the boil his drop off in quality was alarming to say the least.

I think, especially with Barnes, with the way we played at the time, Wood was excellent. Get crosses into him or anything loose in and around the box he has been excellent.

A complete enigma of a player, can’t knock his goal scoring record which in context for the teams he’s played for in the Prem is Fantastic. He isn’t a team player though, causes so many moves to breakdown and cannot hold the ball up despite his physicality, not to mention his habit of being offside. He causes havoc at set pieces, and seems to be in the right place at the right time to score which isn’t by accident.

Like I said a complete enigma.

Almost like being instructed to play on the shoulder of the last man and asked to run on to balls / win low % out balls will cause him to be offside and not hold everything up.

Any time he had it into feet his holdup play was as good as any.

Not an enigma at all - an absolute key cog to our best years since the 70s.
