Anyone who wants to know why town centres were decimated in the name of ‘progress’ in the 1960’s only need to watch Our Friends in the North to understand why we now have these concrete monstrosities.IPAclaret wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 3:39 pmSuch a shame much of old Burnley was demolished, such as the market hall and surrounding cobbled streets and parts of St James's Street.
The original buildings with their character stonework would now look fantastic if respectfully renovated. So much better than the dreary concrete blocks that we now have.
Replaced in haste in the name of progress to try and move the town on from its heavy industrial past which was possibly a good idea at the time but with hindsight, it wasn't unfortunately.

A damn eyesorethat - and the other cladding crap on keirby walk.ClaretsPadiham wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 2:39 pmFor those not in Burnley, here a photo of it took a few hours ago.
What a mess, it needs bulldozing soon as possible.
Thing is with proper brick even if it get's a bit discoloured it still looks fine - white cladding looks god awful at the best of times, even worse when it has muck on it.
Re: Kierby hotel sold
Hotel operators such as Hilton, don't generally own their own buildings. You have a developer who builds the actual building, then an operator who runs it, by buying a franchise of X hotel chain. They have a big book of their operating standards that have to be followed, down to the colour of the bog roll.
So it'll be a developer looking to buy the land and redevelop it.
It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world of it was even stripped back to the shell and core and reclad and fitout. Can't be any worse than it is now.
And it definitely won't be stone unfortunately, unless there the developer is solely a benefactor and has no eye on investor profits.

The oaks is an absolute hole now.... made the mistake of staying their once. Crow Wood is superb, but can be very pricey. There's a plethora of budget hotels, like Prmier Inn and Travelodge, which are great - but you'd be amazed how many business visitors there are in them when I was staying over regularly. There's only the Holiday Inn at Gannow that's in that mid range / business traveller offering, and that's quite often full. A hampton by HIlton style offering, in the town centre, seems to make plenty of sense - it will probably move business from the travelodge/premier inn hotels.

Hamptons are a great option for both budget travellers and business people. Like ChrisG says they are franchises and usually privately owned. I was involved with the main Hilton and the Hampton in Bournemouth and the Hampton in Torquay for a few years and the Hampton is a great product, especially the newer ones. Loads of opportunities on the ground floor too for business hubs and other retail units, similar to what you have at the new cinema development in town.

I’d take a multi storey over what is there now. Highly doubt it would be given there’s zero demand for a multi storey mind.

Heard last week from family members who go to the Queen Vic Brewers fayre regularly that they had been told it was closing to day customers soon and would only be available for premier inn guests.Anybody else heard anything?

It’s such a shame they had to knock down this building from very close to where the Keirby now stands to put a roundabout it.

Rochdale is indeed a desperate area, or town of death as you so eloquently call it. However, I would say they have retained more good looking Victorian buildings than we have in Burnley. Probably by accident though.AlargeClaret wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 5:33 pmThey’ve even got a Hampton in Rochdale , which is a true town of death . However as it’s a large ish urban sprawl with almost no hotels in the town centre , it fits their profile . They’re just mid range competitively priced hotels run as franchises. Pity they’ve still got the hideous Motel style signs they use in the US. Though even a glass tower would be an improvement on the old Kierby palace of romance .

IF is the operative word there. I’d be delighted to be proven wrong and we end up with something like crow wood mark II in the centre of town. But sounds like very preliminary plans and a slight whiff of fantasy. Probably end up with travelodge and a big Costa.

Hmmm. An aquatic centre. Hmmm.
An aquatic centre might work. But more likely, it would be a gimmick that doesn’t work.
Burnley isn’t in need of an aquatic centre, or any gimmicks.
What we need is these ugly buildings tearing down as quickly as possible and replacements made in traditional styles.
We need buildings that reflect the history of the town, built with pride and built to last - from local stone.

This is never going to happen. Like I said before, have you any idea how much Ashlar sandstone costs? Put it this way, it's too prohibitive for a new-build hotel in Burnley centre, or anywhere for that matter in East Lancs. If the council were to somehow insist that new-builds in the town centre were 'local stone', then guess what would be built - sweet FA.

It depends who is willing to invest and how much they're willing to invest. But it also depends on ambition and vision.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Thu May 23, 2024 9:38 amThis is never going to happen. Two managers specifically have set their sights high at Burnley. Dyche and Stan. They dragged us up with our own boot straps. How? They typically bought in better players. We bought in Steve Davis and Ian Wright instead of Steve Blatherwick and Ian helliwell. We swapped out Dane Richards and Zavon Hines for Michael Kightley and George Boyd.
Players like Michael Kightley were MASSIVE improvement on what had come before. They represented not just an improvement in quality but a giant leap forward in ambition.
Sometimes it needs a Barry Kilby to fund things but Dyche showed us what can be done with only a "competitive" budget and enough ambition and energy.
What Burnley cannot afford is to get it wrong again.
If we get a plastic clad modern building we'll be in exactly the same situation in as little as 10 years when it fades into shabbiness.
That is what Burnley cannot afford.

It's fine to disagree. It's not even a problem if you want to try and paint my views as somehow "crazy" or fanciful. "Castles in the air," as you say.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Thu May 23, 2024 10:54 amI'm a realist, not a dreamer. Anyway, I won't indulge you again. But if the Victorians had a perfectly good stone building on the same spot I rather think it ought not to be beyond our generation to do the same.
And I'm very happy to have the debate publicly and to be on the side saying, "Yes, we can do that again," and "Yes, we *should*do that again." You can be on the side of "managed decline" in favour of cheap buildings with plastic cladding etc.
Many people dismissed the signing if Michael Kightley as "pie in the sky" at the time. If we bought a player like that now it would be deemed unexciting. That's because Dyche shifted expectations.
As for Ian Wright, well that a different story altogether. We can be thankful collectively that people like Stan and Barry Kilby had more ambition and simply got it done.
Neither you or I are going to be funding the building do we're only talking about what we want for the town. If building in local stone is seen as "castles in the sky" then sights have been set so low they're below foundation level. It's hardly as if a local stone building is asking for the tower of Babel, is it?
So given we're both doing nothing other than putting down our thoughts on what might serve the town best, I'm sticking with my idea of a landmark building built from local stone (on solid foundations and definitely not "in the sky"). I hope that whatever plastic clad idea you're dreaming of doesn't make it even as far as the drawing board.

Or find very similar stone that's cheaper.

Anothe Dyche-ism springs to mind: "I don't like negative Nellies."
If you start with a lack of ambition, you won't get anywhere. Translated to architecture, it means that if we start with a defeatist attitude we'll end up with yet another cheap plastic clad building.

That's the problem isn't it? Your lack of ambition has left you with a lack of imagination.
Even to the extent that you presumably believe that things the Victorians achieved "can't" be done today.
You apparently can't put forward even the briefest of arguments as to why it "can't" be done.
I'm sorry for you to have such a mindset. It's extremely limiting.

Re: Kierby hotel sold
As I've said, we should budget for stone.
How many people would want live in a plastic clad house instead of a stone one simply "because it's cheaper"? Very few.
Same goes for towns. Who wants Burnley to be packed for if cheap plastic clad buildings?
Nobody does really, truth be told. But if defeatism and negativity win the day then that's what we'll end up with.
