FYI - Beer Fans stocking up for the WC Final
It may already be common knowledge, but Lidl are doing proper Czech Brewed Staropramen.
Not my personal favourite but it pisses all over anything brewed in Burton and the like.

Not sure any beer I’d buy would last the 2 years to drink for the World Cup final tbhŽižkovClaret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2024 10:56 amIt may already be common knowledge, but Lidl are doing proper Czech Brewed Staropramen.

The campsite at Wyreside used to sell it on draught at the clubhouse. When he stopped I asked why, he said everyone was fighting so he had to go back to Stella..ŽižkovClaret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2024 10:56 amIt may already be common knowledge, but Lidl are doing proper Czech Brewed Staropramen.

In Leeds we get lost of new imported beer and one of the most recent ones is a decent Spanish one called Madri. It probably hasn't got to Burnley yet but when it does its worth giving it a try.

Seriously though there's a place in Leeds that does proper Pislner Urquell from the tanks. Forgot the name but it's a nice place.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2024 11:43 amIn Leeds we get lost of new imported beer and one of the most recent ones is a decent Spanish one called Madri. Madri is the old Carling 4.6% but costs considerably more.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2024 11:43 amIn Leeds we get lost of new imported beer and one of the most recent ones is a decent Spanish one called Madri. Leffe Blonde not the same since they decided to weaken it and change the recipe a few months back, for reasons unknown. The Shire Claret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2024 1:54 pmA couple of big bottles of Leffe Blone and a Duvel will do Nicely for me !

I find it weird how precious people are about where beer is brewed. Like it really makes a difference.

Certainly the case with lager

I can't think of a reason why good lager can't be brewed in this country either. I was commenting on your point that there is little difference - I believe there is.

I said it doesn’t make a difference where beer is brewed. For example, Madri wouldn’t taste any better if it was brewed in Madrid.

Re: FYI - Beer Fans stocking up for the WC Final
Depends how you look at it.
If you're reliant on local water conditions, what yeasts grow naturally and the climate then it matters.
If you're brewing commercially and controlling all these variables then no, it doesn't really matter where at all.
Re: FYI - Beer Fans stocking up for the WC Final
I suppose when people refer to better lager being brewed in other countries they are doing so in the general context of superior quality due to the process and ingredients used e.g. German purity law. Of course that can be replicated in this country but it most often isn't, so it does make a difference.

Beer here is just as good. Edit- in fact, real ale is normally far superior. As it hasn't been pasturuized it's retains a fuller flavour. We also have a far wider range of beer thanks to our real ale culture.
The purity laws work really well to promote German beer as a marketing tool but brewers in the UK are hardly adulterating their beer.
We're getting into the same sort of territory that led to the urban myth about a "secret ingredient" in Stella sending people loopy.

Re: FYI - Beer Fans stocking up for the WC Final
But when someone says they won’t drink any beer brewed in the UK then they’re not. There’s good and bad beer brewed in the UK just like there is in almost any country - and for ‘craft’ beers we’re spoiled for choice.taio wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2024 7:31 pmI suppose when people refer to better lager being brewed in other countries they are doing so in the general context of superior quality due to the process and ingredients used e.g. German purity law. It's not nonsense in my experience. The best lager I've had has been brewed in Germany, Belgium and the Czech Republic.Rowls wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2024 7:34 pmNonsense.

I was specifically referring to lager. Totally agree about craft beers in this country.
Re: FYI - Beer Fans stocking up for the WC Final
It's the water, German lager is far, far, superior.

Re: FYI - Beer Fans stocking up for the WC Final
There's a chance you're comparing locally produced, unpasteurised lager to mass produced lager.
There will be a difference there.
There's also the psychological expectation at play. Does Guinness taste better in Dublin? Most people believe so but I can confirm it's the same stuff pretty much wherever you go. You have to factor in how stuff is transported and but that's not difficult with pasturuized beer.
So will budvar taste better in the Czech republic? I reckon it would. Buts that's psychology at play mote than anything else.
Carling regularly tops blind taste tests in the UK.
Our mass produced beer is as good as any other mass produced beer. It has the same four ingredients. No, it doesn't get adulterated.
Our real.ale scene is the best in the world.

Glucose is added to UK brewed lager to make it taste nice, that's what gives you a headache.
