Lots of experience elsewhere on the pitch and Southgate had plenty of time to prepare for the omission of players like Philips, Henderson and Maguire (and Kane who he has picked in pretty much every friendly when he could have been getting other players more experience) if experience was worrying him.

Playing with 10 men and a showroom dummy for 60 minutes seems like a fairly extreme answer.

I think Southgate's point was that he thought England needed Kane's leadership qualities on the pitch, and having watched Burnley last season I wouldn't be so quick to mock that view.
Little bit different - Watkins is 28 and has played well over 100 PL games leading the line for Villa.

Southgate's and the teams flaws simply revealed themselves yet again in a crunch match. It was entirely predictable.

I know what Southgate was alluding to, I just think it's funny that he's mentioned Phillips, Henderson and Maguire during the tournament. They're just odd comments. It's not even like Henderson or Phillips have been anywhere near the England team in the recent past. It's akin to Dyche harking on about George Boyd and Stephen Ward towards the end of his tenure.

Pickford, Stones, Walker, Rice and Kane all have well over 50 caps each. That's pretty much the spine of the team. Even Foden and Saka have 40+ each. The experience is there. There's no need to even bring ex-players names into the conversation; just very odd from Southgate.

Probably been mentioned already but thought Olmo was very lucky not to be sent off

We were lucky not to concede a penalty when Rice held a Spanish forward at a corner.

Experience does not equal leadership. J-Rod has experience but doesn't seem to be a leader. O'Shea is not that experienced but looks to have the qualities of a leader.

That incident looked nowhere near a penalty. The commentators said that VAR didn't even check it.

There you go then, we would have won last night had we started Henderson and Phillips in midfield
In addition to the eleven already on the pitch, maybe :D

Likewise Kane. Then again we probably wouldn't have even noticed.

The overriding feeling from me and all the England fans after the game was that the better team won and that Spain decided to be positive from the outset of the second half and perhaps have more of a winning mentality.

He was very unlucky to be booked, he was just trying to control the ball, nothing in it at all.

£10m per year to Klopp. See what happens.

I believe the manager has to be English. But I struggle here. Howe, Potter?
There isnt one English manager that can take that squad by the reigns, and excite an English fan

We let their left winger and full back overload that side twice with a simple pass into that space.

Why didn’t he tell Saka to track back and follow the winger after the first goal?. So easy to stop it but we didn’t. Asleep at the wheel!

Were we playing a flat back four at that time???? formation was all over the place. Rice playing in no man’s land most of tournament next to the back 3/4. No central midfield most games.

No patterns of play and just relying on moments of brilliance to get by.

God help the club that gets Southgate as their manager next.
