‘Coming close’ is better than the previous version: ‘nowhere near’.dougcollins wrote: ↑Sun Jul 21, 2024 12:33 pmWell, we need someone who can win things.
Coming close is wearing.

So would you be happy with Pep managing England in a World Cup final against Spain?

I don't think you'd have to worry on that score, given his support for Catalonian independence. In any case, no need to worry at all because it isn't going to happen. Pep has more sense. Why would any world-class manager choose to manage England when even getting to finals isn't good enough.

anyone who says they wouldnt want Pep to manage England clearly needs psychiatric help

Think some people will be in for some sort of a shock/reality check post GS if they think simply replacing him will translate into a trophy or 2 because we really aren't anything special. We'll probably revert back to type as mediocre dogga. Anybody considering the England job with the intense pressure that'll come as to be literally off their head it's a graveyard for diminishing reputation.RicardoMontalban wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 7:43 am‘Coming close’ is better than the previous version: ‘nowhere near’.

Some may not be aware that the world wanted to watch English football because it was fast and furious as well as totally combative.
Elsewhere, probably owing to heat, the game is slow and ponderous and that is why passing and keeping the ball works. So boring.
Put it in the box, scramble, tackle, block, shoot l, head, score or clear off the line. All at 100 mph. Football UK

I seem to remember that he previously said he would like to manage an international team. So probably not impossible. But could he replicate his micromanaged detail, as he has done with his previous clubs, into an England team? I would also doubt whether Man City would easily let him go.
But who knows? It would certainly be interesting.

You can't watch much football to have that view. The current England squad individually is very special and is full of the best players in the world. Look at the players we have and going defensive was never the best option.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 8:45 amThink some people will be in for some sort of a shock/reality check post GS if they think simply replacing him will translate into a trophy or 2 because we really aren't anything special. You look at the past, current & future. I'd understand it more if we used to be some super phenomenal elite side & under GS we have developed into a load of rubbish. But you could argue the reverse as happened maybe it's extreme to say super phenomenal or load of rubbish. We'll never know if a different approach would have been more successful because it never happened but what we do know for certain beyond doubt is that he's left us in a better place than when he started & the fans will now expect better results. How exactly that's going to happen remains a mystery & doubtul.claretskeith wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 9:15 amYou can't watch much football to have that view. My first international tournament was Italia 90 and one thing I'm sure of is that this squad is the best in my lifetime. But Southgate is a defensive coach. Sorry but you can't be defensive-minded when you have some of the best players in he world.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 9:24 amYou look at the past, current & future. I always said that this England team needs to be built around Foden. Not Bellingham, but Foden. There's a reason why Spain marked him as our danger man. He had 2-3 men around him every time he got the ball.

I think sometimes whatever you do tactically it just boils down to quality having the deciding edge. Some people who advocated us going us gung ho toe to toe with the Spanish would be the first to complain had we been battered cut to ribbons - why didn't he try to contain Spain & pinch one on the break or from a set piece. It's very easy to complain after knowing a certain approach didn't work but far more difficult/impossible even accurately forecasting the unknown with certainty.claretskeith wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 9:31 amMy first international tournament was Italia 90 and one thing I'm sure of is that this squad is the best in my lifetime. I thought we were actually better vs Spain when we were higher up the pitch and pressing. And I think that's because they don't expect it. But Southgate has put us back on the map. He did well.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 9:37 amI think sometimes whatever you do tactically it just boils down to quality having the deciding edge. I'd happily stake a sizeable amount of money we won't get a better replacement in terms of results improving if that's what people are expecting. Not anytime soon anyway.claretskeith wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 9:40 amI thought we were actually better vs Spain when we were higher up the pitch and pressing. Is that because of the glittering success of English born Managers?

Just for perspective, the last English born Managers to win -
In Europe - Bobby Robson 1977
FA Cup - Harry Redknapp 2008
Premier League - NONE
Division One - Howard Wilkinson 1991/92
I believe this is why English born Managers are not in great demand.

I'll take finals and play better. We can do that with a different coach.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 9:43 amI'd happily stake a sizeable amount of money we won't get a better replacement in terms of results improving if that's what people are expecting. Not anytime soon anyway.

If we can do that with a different coach it just leaves the question why haven't we in decades.claretskeith wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 9:51 amI'll take finals and play better. We can do that with a different coach.

1. Because the people who make these decisions aren't the brightest.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 10:20 amIf we can do that with a different coach it just leaves the question why haven't we in decades.
2. Also man for man, this is the best squad we have had in over 40 years.

You can't take what's not there he got the maximum out of them or near as damn it. I agree it's a bright emerging squad offering promise. I just doubt somebody else can do much better. The likes of Spain Portugal & France aren't just going to sit still whilst we move forwards.claretskeith wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 10:30 am1. We'll see anyway time will tell as an old cliche which undoubtedly it will. I fear this debate is going around in circles entrenched in opposing viewpoints & my time is precious. Have a good day fella.claretskeith wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 10:47 amBut it is there. The quality is there. I don't think he got the maximum out of them.

The FA should appoint the BEST candidate. If he’s English fine, if he’s not English, fine. I don’t care if he’s an alien. I just want to see England WIN a tournament again.

Re: Pep for England? Discuss!
Give it to Howe, he knows how to attack and defend and his teams play front foot football.
After last season the least i want is more passing around the back.
Dont think Pep would be interested anyway. He cant financially dope himself.

Howe can certainly attack. Not convinced of his defensive qualities, based on our own experience.

"Has to rest more," said Guardiola of Haaland. "If he is tired, go to bed early. Tired is an excuse."
Love this quote from Pep. The man takes no crap. England need him if they want silverware. Do you think he would have played Harry Kane?

Would much rather an Englishman.
