Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
Other clubs interested in McNally as a single item so we don't need to do a BOGOF deal to get value. If it works as a deal with Bristol City then grand but no need to give away good talent. These are both players that could feature heavily in most Championship teams. We may need them imminently if we suddenly lose a glut of our higher valued players late in the window (Esteve, Odebert, Berge, O'Shea, Wout etc), who have all interest. Suddenly if those 5 or others went went then we would be light.

Anyway, moving on.....
I can see the Wout deal dragging on till late in the window as he will end up back in Holland. It's just a case of us getting the maximum fee possible.

From some of the links it seemed that Wout had his house sorted and everything in Trabzon.
I did a quick google map images of Trabzon and it looks bloody stunning. Wouldn’t blame him one jot.

Most Google images for Trabzon are of Uzungol Lake which is about 1h45 away - the city is actually on the Black Sea and nowhere near as pretty
Bit like advertising Blackpool as the Lake District

Trabzon is an area I have already carried out some research on as I am looking to purchase a property in that part of the world and the Black Sea part of Turkey seems to be good value...
The best way I have found to get a feel for a place is to type into YouTube 'town/city walking tour'...
Here are a couple of walking tours of Trabzon -

Hope we keep Esteve. Of all potential leavers - O'Shea, Berge, Odobert - he's the key one to me. LCB's are as rare as hens teeth. We got away playing Beyer there last time in the Champ, but then he got found out on the PL.
Any combo of Beyer / Esteve, Al Dakhil/ Esteve, Ekdahl / Esteve would be really, really good in the Championship and with a year's experience, good enough for the PL.
If Esteve goes then it's either Delcroix, or play a RCB at LCB, which is less than ideal.

We have a good pool of centre backs-for me the cream pairing are OShea & Esteve. If we keep both they may well be the stand-out pairing in the Division. What I like about both is whist they are tough in the tackle and brave, they stay injury free. Both are also very quick. Sadly whilst Beyer had some wonderful games in the Championship, it does not take much for him to come off injured, then remain injury for very lengthy games. Its almost as if we would not miss him now, but sadly because he has played so few games in 12 months, there is probably no interest in him. Sadly for me Beyer, Delcroix, Al Dakhill and Ekdal seem to be an injury waiting to happen. The three players I don't want to leave are Oshea, Esteve and Berge. Even if Odobert attracts big money, Koleosho and Benny can deputise, and all over the pitch we now seem to have coverLord_Bob wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 3:18 pmHope we keep Esteve. So we don’t have centre backs anymore, we just have left centre backs and right centre backs? When did that happen?Lord_Bob wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 3:18 pmHope we keep Esteve. So everyone who plays on the left side of the pitch has to be left footed, and everyone who plays on the right has to be right footed?
Wow…. Things really have changed. Who decided all this?

Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
I think Bobinho that Lord Bob was simply making the point that left footed centre backs are rarer than right footed. If you can get one of each playing on a regular basis ie Tarks & Mee then you have the optimum pairing. There are of course many top teams play with two right footed centre backs for the reason above

Tarks had to play LCB to cover one of Mee's injuries for a while, and he looked really uncomfortable there.
Last season Ekdal had to play LCB against Fulham at home (I think) and was terrible. He got taken off at HT

Yep, fully get that, I’m just wondering when it became something like the holy grail? It’s just that of all the great (good) centre half pairings from history, the vast majority have two right footers… I don’t remember it ever being a “thing”.warksclaret wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 4:10 pmI think Bobinho that Lord Bob was simply making the point that left footed centre backs are rarer than right footed. Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
Center back pairings needing to be one left footed and one right are right up there with other really prominent modern footballing tropes such as
Shirt numbers should be 1-11
The gaffer should be able to have a pall mall on the sideline side if he fancies
Shinpads are for the weak
Etc

In the main, natural right footed players can still be quite adept using their left foot
Whereas left footed players seem to struggle more going onto their right hand side
Tarks did not look as comfortable when covering for Mee on the left of centre and Ben really looked weak on his right hand side
Same with our wide men
Benson and JBG come inside about 90% of the time rather than go down to the line to cross with the right foot - even Koleosho did not look anywhere near as effective when moved to the right side

Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
It's really quite simple, a naturally left footed player receives the ball in a way that opens up the left hand side and helps keep shape of his own team and also the opposition can't so easily read and shut down one side.
Nothing new. It's always been the case. It doesn't make it impossible to have players on their wrong foot but it helps with shape. Shape is much more important than people realise.

Galatasaray have bid over £20m for Gabriel Sara at Norwich. There’s obviously money knocking about in Turkey. Norwich would miss him.

Add in Cullen & Brownhill in midfield with Berge and that spine is as good as anything ever at this level. The makings of a very strong team, even if we have one or two others leave.

Seen Osula a fair bit and I’m astonished he’s going for 15m+5m to Newcastle. He’s scored 1 goal outside of League One. Has physical attributes and some potential because of that but jeez, kinda puts into perspective the type of fees we should be attracting for ours.FeedTheArf wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 11:03 pmSheff United selling a guy called Osula (no, me either) to Newcastle for £20m should boost their coffers for some incomings.

I thought he was a bit of a shining light for Sheffield last season (not hard tbh haha)
Looks to have raw talent and the physical attributes to be a good striker. However that is mind blowing money to be spending on him right now.
Newcastle are probably in the position where they can take a 15m punt on a striker. Wouldn’t be surprised if they loan him back to Sheffield for the season

Even the Sheff Utd fans are shocked but Eddie Howe isn't afraid of splashing the cash on young talent if he sees something in them.
Usually gets it right to be fair, although theres always a chance he could be the next Jordan Ibe.

'Eddie Howe isn't afraid of splashing the cash'
Well, he wouldn't be would he? Plenty to splash and so far apart from an aborted attempt in the Champions League little to show for it. Candidate for next national manager? With that to show one would expect so.

I raved about Beyer in the promotion season I told neutral fans he'd go to a top team but how injury prone he is I can't see that happening now and I'd cash in on him, I'd rather sell Beyer and Ekdal and keep Delcroix and Al Dakhil.warksclaret wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 3:30 pmWe have a good pool of centre backs-for me the cream pairing are OShea & Esteve. Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
Gobsmacked about that. Many including myself had them down to be troubling the business end of the table, and their fans had been given reason to be optimistic by their new owners.
They've sold some decent first teamers for bargain prices which is fair enough after a second glance as it appears they were either running their contracts down or beginning to outlive their usefulness to the team but they most certainly haven't yet replaced them with like for like quality.
There's a lot been said about our performances last season but over he past 15 years we've been very lucky that there's always been a bit of excitement. We might go down, we might go up.
These lot are neither gonna go down or up. Just staring down a season of purgatory before they even start which is depressing. How lucky we've been.

Apparently has an English dad and French mum. Lived over there since he was 4. Has been called by England U21s, but largely a back up at St Etienne.
Presumably coming in as cover.
Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
Does he count as homegrown under EFL rules? I don’t think so because he hasn’t been trained by a UK based club but might be wrong, as he is British so it may not matter.

Things are starting to take shape-at least on the incoming front. Hopefully we start to see some movement in the other direction too before too many players start getting disappointed at not even getting close to the starting squad v Luton in 9 days time
