So we sell all of our better players, we hopefully get promoted then what? We have to buy a whole new team again to replace the ones leaving now. So we just rebuild every summer? How do you possibly get any better doing that?
I have to say, I’m very much in this camp with regards to the rumoured outgoings. I knew there was going to be sales but I wasn’t expecting quite so many on the “best players” side and more on the “fringe players” side. It’s hard to see the point of last season at all at the moment.
It’s easy to say “ah but finances, debt, etc - you know the reality” but Kompany did say that this summer was different to last and that there was less financial pressure to sell. That must’ve been rubbish because if rumoured outgoings are true we got £70m last summer and are in for £100m plus this summer, so I don’t think it’s a totally unfair position for fans to be quite so surprised that we seem to be selling all our best players and spine… and a lot of experience to boot.
I think ALK and Pace are taking a big gamble now on Scott Parker to perform the miracles Kompany did.
If we go up again I’m of the view we don’t bother spending and see how our lads do, accept the inevitable relegation again but then try to use the subsequent summer sales to buy a squad we can afford to keep together.
This “go up, spend, go down, sell”, cycle isn’t sustainable at all, even if the financial model we have put in place is starting to bare fruit.
