Re: 54 Years a Claret.
Just look at that forward line, and scoring goals, particularly in this game was the biggest problem.I remember this game so we'll,the eventual double winners Arsenal scored early,we then spent the rest of the first half in their penalty box peppering their goal,we eventually equalised via an own goal.Lucky Arsenal went on to win 2-1.I still have the program
Re: 54 Years a Claret.
Just another thing, the programme for that season was the first glossy program,I have the full collection for that season

At least we only conceded two goals on your debut, it was three for mine, although we did score five.

Look at the horrendously poor attendance.
Re: 54 Years a Claret.
Mine was late 60s, I can’t remember exactly but I’ll never forget the feeling as I walked up onto the standing area, not sure what the stand was called but it was the now Bob Lord stand where you could stand in the lower section with seating in the higher part. We beat Stoke (think it was Stoke) 4.0 Lochhead and Willie Morgan, wow. It was amazing.

Just look at the names on that team sheet provided by Since62 - absolute greats in both sides. Only Alex Elder, Terry Medwin and Cliff Jones still with us.

Although it wasn't my first visit to Turf Moor, I became a Claret on December 4th 1965, during a1-1 draw with Tottenham.

Re: 54 Years a Claret.
Just beat me to it, CT. Absolute legends all over the pitch from both teams. That name Greaves, wearing No 10 would send shivers down my spine and I was too young to realise that I was honoured to be watching one of the greatest goalscorers of all time. When Greaves didn't have the ball I was relieved that it was only White, Mackay,Blanchflower or Jones in possession. Of course I just loved our line up and games v Spurs in that era were just 'very, very special.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2024 9:42 amJust look at the names on that team sheet provided by Since62 - absolute greats in both sides. August 25, 1959, Tuesday night game v Everton, won 5-2, aged eight. To my shame I suppose, I’ve only just read Tim Quelch’s superb review of that title winning season, Never Had It So Good

That Arsenal game was my second home game, having travelled up from the South the previous season with Arsenal supporters club for that home game, an evening match and another defeat, 0-1.RammyClaret61 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 11:02 pmIMG_9529.jpeg

The one in 1970-71 was when I first met Dave Burnley (then Beeston) on Burnley Central station after the match. He reports on it in his first book, having to cope with some unpleasant Arsenal supporters on the train back to Preston, although it's not quite how I recall it.

Hi durhamclaret , your first game v West Brom Tony will put me right but is that the game when John Talbot scored his only goal for Burnley? Unfortunately it was an own goal because we had sold him to West Brom the week before.

Cheers Tony. It's one of those things that stick in your memory I was stood behind the goals that day and still can see the look on his face and the stick he got.

My first game was 1960-61 and of course we were reigning champions.

A 2-0 victory over Bolton if I remember.

My first game was a Reserve match against Newcastle in September 1963, but my opening first team game was 22nd August 1964 and a 2-2 draw with Blackpool. My dad first went on the Turf in 1931 and like many other fans I have him to thank (or blame) for 60 years of supporting this wonderful, irritating & unique club.

Re: 54 Years a Claret.
I wish I could name my first match. I certainly remember many in the early sixties, Willie Irvine and Andy Lochhead always come to mind. My dad always insisted that I was there at times to watch the likes of McIllroy and Adamson but was far too young to remember clearly. My dad insisted that young kids could be parked on the grass of the pitch next to the wall but I find that a bit too much to believe now.
Re: 54 Years a Claret.
My first game was Boxing Day, 1961, when we tonked Sheffield Wednesday. My grandfather took me and we stood on the Beehole end. Ron Springett, who was England's keeper at the time, was in goals for Wednesday and, sad to relate, that was what primarily interested me. I remember great swathes of cigarette smoke under the floodlights in the winter air.
The start of an addiction (Burnley, not fags!) which has lasted and shows no sign of weakening. It's been hard, occasionally - alright, for at least a decade - but it's been worth it.

Re: 54 Years a Claret.
I’ve just started my 50th season as a claret. First match was the opening home game of the 75/76 season, a 0-0 draw with Arsenal (David O’Leary made his debut).

I am 80 years old and my first game at the Turf was against Derby Co. and I think we lost 0+2. I was about 8 years old and I came away from the Beehole End thinking only of Jimmy Strong in goal and Terry Lyon’s on the left wing. It must have been approx. 1951 or 52.

My first game at Turf Moor was against Arsenal on 16th August 1975, a 0-0 draw. Drove 250 miles to watch David O'Leary hoofing anything that came near to him for safety as it was his debut (Wikipedia have it as 3-3 but they're wrong).
Actually been a Burnley fan since the 1962 FA Cup Final (and I've hated Spurs ever since!) but as a born and bred Southerner I got by watching Burnley games in and around London until that 1975 match.

First game I remember was Burnley 2 Millwall 0, 22nd April 1972. Definitely not my first ever leagur game, though, because I saw Torquay beat Aston Villa in division 3 10 days earlier, when we were on holiday down there.
My mother's was Burnley 0 Derby 2, 26th August 1947. She still goes on, though we are forced to use the hospitality zone nowadays because outside is too cold.
