Ben Gibson
What was the problem with him? Wikipedia has him down as making just one appearance for us. Surely he played more games but I seem to remember problems with him but can’t remember what.

Re: Ben Gibson
His main problems were Mee and Tarkowski

Re: Ben Gibson
Couldn’t get in the team. Dyche promised him a loan in January. Watford came in for him and Dyche said “but not to relegation rival”. They fell out. It happens.

Re: Ben Gibson
I remember hearing that he was brought in when it looked as though Ben Mee wasn't renewing his contract. Mee then saw him come in and signed a new deal. Gibson then didn't respond very well to not being in the team. Don't know how true that is, however.

Re: Ben Gibson
Sort of symbolic of what was really shoddy recruitment back then. Club record fee, no one could see where he was gonna get a game. Didn’t use this piece of recruitment to sell Tarks at his peak and instead then let him walk for nothing. Then it turns out we weren’t getting a great character anyway.

Re: Ben Gibson
I think much of the above is probably not far from being accurate. I also think you have to factor in that we were about to enter Europe with the possibility of games most Thursdays right up until Christmas at least. I always suspected Gibson was bought with this in mind and was told he'd be selected for these to give either of the other two a rest. Of course, we ultimately fell short and he was suddenly superfluous to requirements and grumpy.

Sent off on his debut in europe wasnt he?

Re: Ben Gibson
Coming from Captain at your Club to warming a bench was never a recipe for success. Played in Europe and got sent off then a training ground bust up was rumoured.

Didn't get a game because he wasn't good enough.

Re: Ben Gibson
The same “ shoddy recruitment “ that brought us Sean Dyche and 7 prem seasons ( oh and 2 champ promotions ,1 as champs ) ??JR1882 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 30, 2024 4:46 pmSort of symbolic of what was really shoddy recruitment back then. While Gibson was a high profile replacement for the proposed sale of either Mee or Tarks , he wasn’t prepared to fight for his place or sit out a season like Tarky had to do . He was clearly acting like a flouncing tart because football doesn’t always pan out like you expect .
Re: Ben Gibson
Not up to the quality of the incumbents.
Re: Ben Gibson
We'll never know. But Mee and Tarkowski were too good for him to be selected ahead of them.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Sat Nov 30, 2024 5:23 pmNot strictly true. We were in wretched form in the first half of the season and he may well have got a chance as a result but was injured.

Re: Ben Gibson
As I posted earlier in the match thread: I think that without those three years he lost playing silly buggers (on both sides?) Ben Gibson might well have achieved more in his career.

Re: Ben Gibson
I thought we signed him because we thought Ben Mee was going to leave but then Mee decided to stay?

Re: Ben Gibson
A lot of fiction on this thread. When he signed it had nothing to do with Mee or his contract, that had already been agreed. Dyche wanted Craig Dawson but we went for Alfie Mawson and then Gibson. We had a poor first half of that season but he missed most of that through two lots of surgery but got in for the home game against Everton on Boxing Day which proved to be his only league appearance for us. After that, Tarky & Mee were outstanding.
As for the Watford story, had he been going there we weren’t in any relegation battle. He left to train at Middlesbrough after a training ground incident that Dyche was not involved in.
I don’t think he’s a Premier League defender to be honest, very slow too.

Not sure if it is true or not - someone may be able to confirm
The training ground incident was rumoured to be that in a practice match he went over the top of the ball on Phil Bardsley

Re: Ben Gibson
Not sure about this? Although Bardsley had a bit of a reputation, Gibson is a big unit. Don’t think he would have been scared of “Salford Phil”.

Re: Ben Gibson
'Not the face Phil, not the face'. I can hear that now - Bardsley would likely knock Gibson into next week in an out and out scrap.

Re: Ben Gibson
Bardsley and Rooney (former team mates at MUFC) had a bit of a spar at Rooney's house - just a bit of fun, but gloves on.
Rooney caught Bardsley with a couple of good one's and Bardsley decked Rooney.
This happened when Bardsley was playing for Sunderland. Just wonder in Gibson knew about it and saw himself as a bit of a hard man, so would do Bardsley. Conjecture, obviously.

Re: Ben Gibson
Ben Gibson is just one example of the failed summer we had in 2018, that was the summer to kick on and we wasted best part of 30m on Gibson and Vydra. Gibson was never going to start ahead of Mee and Tarky and Vydra dyche clearly didn’t fancy him from the start. We also wasted money on panic buying Joe hart
