Ayresome Park, Middlesbrough - Old Ground Remembered (vii)

Post by jdrobbo » Fri Dec 27, 2024 7:27 pm

After bumping into former Boro striker, John Hendrie, whilst walking my cocker spaniel this morning (spent half an hour with him and he had lots of lovely anecdotes about Burnley and connections between the two clubs) and with the Clarets heading up the A19 on Sunday evening, I thought that Ayresome Park would be a fitting next ground to remember in the series.

I introduced myself by reminding John Hendrie that I was there to see him score a hat trick against us in the 94/95 season, to which his immediate response was… “I scored all five goals against you that season!!” :D

Any anecdotes of trips to Ayresome Park or memories of games to share?

Mixed for me.
The 72-73 team coming back from 1-3 down to equalise with two very late goals to keep the unbeaten run going. They then lost, at home, to Orient the next match.

The despair after a 2-0 defeat, late March ‘75. We kicked off top of the league and I thought they could win it but only 1 win followed that defeat and we didn’t even make European football.

My happiest memory on Ayresome Park was in the ‘66 World Cup. Witnessing North Korea beating Italy, 1-0.
Living in the NE and later working on Teesside it is a ground I was on often.

They built houses on the old ground but marked the old centre spot with a plaque or maybe an ornamental football. They invited members of the North Korean team to the opening.

My first visit was 1972/73 and the comeback - saw us win there 4-1 in 82/83. We’d scored five at Bury that week in the League Cup and had nine different scorers. David Holt was the only outfield player not to score.

Scariest ground that I have been to following Burnley.
I went twice in 82-83. The first game was our first away game after promotion from division 3 (now league 1). As soon as disembarking from the old Viscount Central coaches outside the away end we were attacked by Boro fans. They were scaling the fences and jumping into our end throughout the game. After the game we had quite a long way back to the coaches past a cemetry where they were trying to attack the escort from all different angles. We took a really good following that day of maybe 1 or 2 thousand. My memory's a little hazy so I am not quite sure of the exact numbers. We played really well and won 4-1.
The next time we played them was midweek in the return leg of an early Milk Cup tie. We drew 1-1 but went through 3-2 on aggregate I think. Brian Laws scored a late penalty if I remember correctly.
I think there were less than 1 hundred there including a coach from Viscount that was not quite full.
Thankfully the natives left us alone🤣🤣

You are spot on with the two games in 82/83. It was a Laws penalty that took us through in the League Cup.

The 3-3 in 72-73. There were Boro fans piling into the back of our end as our third goal went in.

I sincerely have no idea how we got back to the car unscathed.

Very scary indeed.

Didn't Nobby Stiles play in that game?

Having been brought up with Burnley in the basement division, it was an almost 'pinch myself' feeling to be travelling up to Ayresome Park for our opening fixture in Div 1. Felt 'big time'. I remember a sea of red and white all around the ground from our view in the corner and a buoyant Middlesbrough support caught up in the fervour of Bryan Robson. They had a good run in the nineties did Boro.

Did they beat us 3-0 at home then if Hendrie got 5 goals against us that season? I thought it was a 2-0 loss at the Turf with Robson getting sent off but I may be mistaken

Just had a nosey at the other results and spotted a certain Andy Payton putting us to the sword in a home defeat to Barnsley!

His level was definitely outside of the Premier Lesgue but he was a clever player. He scored nine in the inaugural PL season of 1992/93, including a hat trick against Blackburn. When I reminded him if that yesterday, he said, “Are you sure you’re a Burnley fan and not a Boro fan?”

“Absolutely, John, but us Clarets remember when people do great things against the team from down the road”

He then told me how he’d attended the Burnley Blackburn game at Turf Moor in 2000 and he said that despite playing for the likes of Bradford, Boro, Newcastle and Leeds, nothing has ever come close to the sheer hatred he witnessed that day.

Yes a real novelty. Thankfully the tv game vs Sheff Utd later in the season made for some better repeat 📼 viewing!

I lived in Middlesbrough for a few years in the early 80's and attended both games in the 1982-83 season, the 4-1 win in the league and the draw in the League Cup, which sent us through on aggregate.

I was in the Holgate End with my Middlesbrough supporting mate, so had to bite my tongue during both games, as the fans around me got quite annoyed with their team. Luckily, my mate didn't reveal who I supported, so I emerged unscathed. From reading a couple of the posts above, it seems I was safer in the home end!

Middlesbrough was a pretty rough place at that time, especially if you weren't from the area.

My dad used to run the Middlesbrough (Newport) Youth club back in the seventies, rough then. Then it merged with the Settlement Community Centre.

There are many good folk in Middlesbrough. I went to college there in the early 80's.

Boro has a large catchment area, to Hartlepool, Skockton, Guisborough etc

We went to the 82/83 game incredible result at the time.

Yep 72 73 for me......was a bit scary late in the game, as Burnley were banging the goals in and we were surrounded by Boro fans, who had made their way over from the home end.
