Boring Burnley!
Boring Burnley!
That is what a national newspaper calls us and in this podcast, they don't hold back. with words like 'abysmal' used!. It is also a bit of fun to Google 'boring burnley' as we come up with a lot of search results these days for that query.
The reporter who had to endure the game against Leeds says it was the worst game he had ever seen... The most boring match he had ever seen before our match was in 2005 but he went and looked at the stats for that game in 2005 and it had 4 times as many chances as our last game lol.
On the podcast, they said they would never pay to watch us and that they were surprised there were no boos after the game. (That might counter the argument by some here that we get on player's backs). If anything, I am always surprised at how mild and patient we are as fans!
Anyway, here is a link to that podcast: https://www.theguardian.com/football/au ... ly-podcast

If the Guardian reporter chose that particular match to attend hoping to be “entertained” then they are as thick as porridge. Almost every pundit was predicting a tight top of the table clash, under 2.5 goals, and both teams to score NO.

Re: Boring Burnley!
Not sure what you're getting at there, Goobs, but this boring stuff of being in with a damn good shout of promotion and having gone through a pretty torrid run of fixtures unscathed will do me.
Can you imagine the doom and gloom if we'd been beaten by Leeds?
We now have to see off the lesser teams - no means feat - and this whingeing will soon be forgotten.

Re: Boring Burnley!
I went on the Accy game last night. I’ve been fairly critical of some of our home performances this season, but let me tell you, we look like prime Brazil compared to League 2 football.
Re: Boring Burnley!
Only conceding 15-20 goals all season is pointless if we don’t go up.
All the post match interviews were dominated by our defensive record, but also similarly by our lack of threat up top.
Unfortunately the two go hand in hand, and you can’t talk about one without the other.
Joni McAnuff asked Parker a pointed question about our lack of goals, and it was the first time that I recall Parker really admitting that it’s becoming a bit of a problem, whereas before he has generally said we are ‘nudging’ it along.
Parker and the players know where we need to improve, they’re not stupid, and I think now we’ve got through this run of fixtures the handbrake will come off a little.

Let's see if the board agree with that when alcohol, food, corporate, walk-ons, ticket sales and season ticket take-ups decline over the next year or so!by Staniola » Wed Jan 29, 2025 8:49 am
It’s not an entertainment business, it’s professional sport, which is essentially, a winning business. We go to watch and support our team do well. If you want guaranteed entertainment, go to the cinema.
One of the main reasons they potted a previous manager was because they could see declining crowds when we were in the Premier League in my opinion and if anyone thinks that winning is the only reason for fans to stay loyally, especially younger fans, then they are incredibly naive and are taking support for granted.
The number of times I have heard fans I know say that they would rather spend their hard-earned money going for a meal or similar rather than watching us seems to be growing too. Many blokes would rather go out with their wife than watch Burnley lol, that's how bad it has got.
I know loads who are opting out at the moment, including my 18-year-old son and all his mates and he has been a fan for 10 years! There is zero chance that we keep our fan base playing this type of football at home, let alone expand it and the board isn't stupid, they will know that.
Younger fans today have so many more options and it is far harder to gain their loyalty, they don't have that tribalism, support-at-all-costs mentality that the older generation has... Fans in general are getting older and over 40% of people between 13 and 23 are saying that they're not interested in sport at all, it's a ticking timebomb!

1. The senseless people who work in our commercial department putting up prices ridiculously after we got relegated and sat now there wondering why most weeks it’s half empty
2. Getting spanked at home nearly every week last season in one of the most dismal seasons in our history.
3. Several seasons in the Premier League, VAR, the gap widening between clubs, etc etc….the novelty is simply wearing thin with many fans (not just at our club either)

I thought it was pretty funny tbh- you can’t really argue with anything they had to say.
1.4 goals on average per game seen at Turf Moor this season. A record since 1922. Impressive.

Pace is taking a huge risk with the fan-base employing Parker, the repercussions of us not going up this season could be huge with the amount of fans who are finding other things to do with their time...will they come back when things finally change?

Re: Boring Burnley!
It is more of a balance than it used to be, purely based on price. Of you're paying a big chunk of your salary to watch football as a family, then at some point entertainment value comes into it.
The salaries of footballers is obscene, and that cost is passed on to supporters, many of whom simply can't afford it. The net affect of that is you get genuine lovers of a football club being replaced by those who can afford it. And they aren't necessarily as forgiving about results in lieu of being entertained.
If the game was affordable, you would i) filter people in the ground who love the team and the club and ii) Push focus towards results rather than entertainment.

Kompany certainly did dream big. He was more interested in show casing his philosophy than keeping us in the Premier League.burnley007 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 9:34 amI am in that category, which is where so much of my frustration comes from. And Pace has taken a huge risk by employing a manager that has got a 100% track record of getting out of this league? Give over.
We’ve negotiated a relegation, ridiculous player turn over, and a new manager extremely well. All of those factors alone can derail a season.
Criticism of our lack of goals is more than justified, but there’s also plenty of positives. There’s work to be done, but we’re pretty much on track and where we ought to be.
If you really think it’s all doom and gloom, I’ll give you the number of my Luton mate and you can speak to him.

Re: Boring Burnley!
Why do we have to keep having these ridiculous extreme analogies to support a narrative? All we want is to not be in the bottom 6 in the league for chances created and not be the worst team out of all 4 leagues for draws at home!If people want to be “entertained” go and watch Sheffield Wednesday. Other point - it's not exactly exciting the kids. Both mine have no interest in coming on the turf again after going to watch a handful of boring, laborious games at the start of the season. They saw us get a few spankings last season and now this.
They're both football mad - this Christmas neither wanted a Burnley shirt. The oldest especially will watch other teams all the time on TV.
If you want fans in the future, you need to win them over.

This is true but it is also the kind of question some dullards deserve who have gone into meltdown during and since the Leeds game.
I imagine almost everyone would have taken the points tally we just have from those last 9 games, same as everyone would have taken a point on Monday.
Was the game good - no, does it need the drama queen reactions we have had since the game ended no as well.
The weirdest part for me is those whining about the game while watching it on TV, use your remote and watch something which could be classed in the entertainment category and enjoy your viewing.

Now that is a slightly better comparison but still silly... It is fairer to compare Parker to the SD era I suppose but definitely not to compare it to a Premier League season, that's just daft...by kentonclaret » Wed Jan 29, 2025 10:06 am
For the last 2 PL seasons under Dyche Burnley were 1 of the 3 lowest scoring teams.
Instead, let's compare us to SD and VKs Championship promotion seasons and then see where your stats are at lol... In fact, don't bother, they blow this comparable season in terms of a promotion push and being contenders out of the water for most attacking stats.

As for people watching it on TV and turning it off... They already are! My 18-year-old son has stopped going on because of the football after going on for 10 years and he has tried numerous times to watch it on TV since but has even given up doing that now, it is so bad.
People like you, like you just said, will tell people to not go on or don't bother watching or switch over if they're not entertained which means you are confirming that people are bored and being turned off by the football. That is the whole point of the conversation!

Re: Boring Burnley!
Gven the current state of the finances and the model ALK runs it is essential that we get promoted and that is the most important point. It's a points business.
Saying that it is deadly dull and the Leeds game was awful. It will affect the gates and that must be a concern. I would also say that if our timid approach costs us a top two position then some of the criticism is warranted.
Two reasons I don't want to criticise Parker is because: (1) I think a competitive, hard to beat team is a good place to start if we do get promoted and (2) we are woefully lacking up front.
I'm not sure why we spent Eur11 million on Lyle Foster because he does not seem a good fit for either a VK or SP team and has not got much of a record to warrant such a fee. And that's not to say he is a bad player by any means he's not it's just hard to see what his role is in the squad.
In the end, given the model ALK runs and the mistakes made in the transfer market we are doing well to be where we are and SP has done a good job so far.
So, yes we are boring but I can see why and if we do get promoted no doubt we can start to resolve the numerous mistakes made during the VK era.

Whether or not our results will be good enough to make up for the lack of entertainment is obviously a close run thing at the moment.
Re: Boring Burnley!
100% a results business. Football is so fickle these days. Managers are judged on results. They know if they lose a few they are suddenly out of a job.

Weird how the turf is more or less full every game, what with all these fans turning away from the club.

Re: Boring Burnley!
Every game? Is that your argument here, cos it feels less than a week ago that the team scored 5. But maybe that's just in my world. And are the results that impressive? They've lost 2 games all season, and are averaging nigh on 2 points per game. That's very good.burnley007 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 9:35 amAre our results really THAT impressive?? Worth being bored to tears every game, gaining a reputation as a team you don't want to ever watch, own fans arguing about whether it's worth it?
I'm not so sure it is...

Re: Boring Burnley!
As always it’s down to a combination of things.
Yes SP was handed a difficult scenario but yes some of this is down to his tactics and his purchases / selections.
It’s undoubtedly boring and frustrating to watch.
But our current ownership and financial model means that going up this year or next is their priority. For an owner who has not even heard of Eric Dier do we really expect them to have an idea that SP does not have a history of his teams playing like Kevin Keegans teams (he won’t have heard of him either)
We are kind of stuck with what we have for now. No merit in getting rid of SP and in no way does he deserve it either. We have had some great away performances too which is extremely enjoyable in this division because of the amount of fans we can take away.
It’s not all doom and gloom - there’s more good than bad. If some of our supporters can’t take that - then it’s up to them. Luckily we have enough fans who can take the ups and downs

Re: Boring Burnley!
Even then it’s not really guaranteed at the cinema, is it? You’ll enjoy some films more than you will others.
We won the last game 5-0 away. Very boring, that.
Agree with the other comments that it’s a results business and that’s what counts. It was a good result vs Leeds.
We had a brilliant season under Kompany at Championship level, one I think is often overlooked and under appreciated now, but it was followed up by a terrible one.
Maybe, just maybe, we’ll have a less exciting one this year but a better one next year (if promoted)… which we should keep in mind.

A comparison between our attendances this season compared to those under VK in the Championship.

Re: Boring Burnley!
They aren't actual figures though are they, just how many tickets were sold?
Also, it's a rubbish metric because season tickets were purchased prior to the seasons so the attendances can't really give a true reflection until next season. Obviously if we go up like we did under Kompany then it becomes meaningless because we will probably be sold out most weeks or close to.
Only if we dont go up will we see the real effect of Parkers style on attendances.
Re: Boring Burnley!
More to it than that. If all people were interested in was results, then the Burnley Cricket team would be getting 20,000 on every week as well, because they're a winning side.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 9:30 amIt’s a results business…. Always has been, always will be…..
People want to win, obviously, but even for the diehards, a large part of the reason they attend is because they want to watch football. If they think they aren't getting football, or not enough of it, then sooner or later they will stop going on.

Re: Boring Burnley!
And that argument is totally debunked by Spijed's table above, showing an increase in attendance this year, compared to the last championship season.dsr wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2025 11:27 amMore to it than that.
