Shoplifting
I know there was an old thread in this but just caught another one today in the act locally. Could tell he was about to do it told the people on the tills and they just say the police have told them not to approach them and they get them all the time. Would the police be interested if we all just take what we want when we want it ?

Re: Shoplifting
Did the person on the till say they were told not to report it to the police, or just not to approach the criminals?

Re: Shoplifting
They said if they report it the police aren’t interested and don’t/ won’t do anything. They’ve been told not to approach them. So it will carry on. Everyone else pays higher prices to cover the expected losses from inaction.

Re: Shoplifting
To be frank, the police call handler would tell you, in no uncertain terms, to let them go.

Until we have a much larger Police Force and have them visible on the streets it’s going to continue. We just don’t have proper deterrents. We need more jails built and long sentences, (none of this serving half your time) that might make some think twice before they commit crime. Going back to the original topic I bet if walked into my local Aldi and picked up what I want then tried to walk out I’d be challenged. As for the Police attending I intend to ask that question.

But as everybody knows, they are being stretched even more and all deployments from calls for service are assessed on current risk posed. Just because they don't always come out on blue lights every time, doesn't mean they don't deal with it.
Quite the opposite in fact, scrutiny by the government through HMICFRS means they deal with a hell of a lot more than they used to.

I like the sound of that.
Please tell us what the process is, what “force” if any we could use when carrying this out. I’d also like to know what terminology I should use so that everyone knows I’m the good guy, and also what arguments could use in my own defence when I undoubtedly end up in court faced with kidnapping/illegal incarceration charges.
Cheers.

They do eventually it depends how busy they are. If anything the police are even more compelled to turn up once that happens. Any member of the general public can't be expected to detain any potential offender for any great length of time due to the possibility of aggression resisting arrest.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 1:27 pmWhat good would that do? Re: Shoplifting
Obviously deterrent and punishment is part of any law & order solution, but it might be more cost efficient to consider and manage the cause of widespread shoplifting rather than opting for 'whack a mole' approach of employing a huge police force to patrol the streets, doubling the capacity of the prosecution service to deal with all the occurrences and building a load more jails to throw people in only for them to offend again on their release a few months later.beddie wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 1:53 pmUntil we have a much larger Police Force and have them visible on the streets it’s going to continue. Re: Shoplifting
People should start caving shoplifters heads in. Maybe then they'll snap out of the smack induced state and sort their lives out. Sub human ****. Can't stand the fact that people know there's no punishment for committing crime

Re: Shoplifting
Letting these people get away with petty crime just encourages them to keep going or up the ante. Not disimilar to modern day refereeing, allowing throw ins to be take 10 yds. up pitch, goalkeepers time waisting , faining injury. Just bloody book them /charge them.

Re: Shoplifting
That wouldn't solve anything. If we are talking about the reasoning why people commit crime such as drugs particularly the harder drugs such as heroin. Withdrawing off heroin is probably far more painful than somebody beating them up & telling them not to do it again.

I watch a lot of stings such as the online children protection teams that turn up on the doorsteps & sometimes have to do citizens arrests to stop evidence being destroyed. The police always turn up the only difference is the evidence is already there.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 3:16 pmYeah, and this is why I said the call handler will tell you, in no uncertain terms, to let shoplifters go. Re: Shoplifting
And this depends on whether the footage is actually sent in, (quite a lot isnt) is of sufficient enough quality to make an identification of the offender (a hell of a lot isnt - certainly not able to stand up to scrutiny in court casting doubt) , and also having somebody that does actually know who the offender is and willing to put pen to paper in a statement.claretcarrot93 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 2:26 pmI work in retail and the police are not interested, they just tell you to send in footage and nothing happens.
Re: Shoplifting
We’re having a real crackdown on shoplifting at the moment, and have been for a while.
We nicked a Romanian shoplifter as part of an OCG before Xmas. He was responsible for thefts totalling £38K in Boots stores across the UK. We recovered £4K of cosmetics from his car boot on the day we arrested him.
We got him charged for 31 counts of shoplifting and put in a remand application to keep him in, as well as to seize his passport.
The court let him out and he flew straight back to Romania before his hearing. We’ll never see him again.
Our Criminal Justice system is a joke.

The worst offenders where I am is the Co-op. They don’t know how to work their CCTV machines, they provide insufficient footage, they don’t respond to emails etc.
We detained a shoplifter in the Co-Op 2 days ago and staff told us he had been in over the weekend stealing meat. They couldn’t find the footage, made no record of what he had stolen- basically didn’t collate any evidence.
We had no choice but to let him go.

Exactly this! It would probably be deemed an infringement of the shoplifters human rights, and inevitably there would be a kerfuffle leading to you being done for assault. God this country has become soft!bobinho wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 2:13 pmI like the sound of that.

Make a citizen's arrest and let's say there's a bit of a struggle and the person you are tying to detain twists an ankle, or whatever - you'll probably end up getting your arsed sued off by some no-win-no-fee chancers.

Force you use has to be proportionate to the threat you are facing.

I went in Boots the other day. I was the odd one out - I paid. It's shocking the level of this crime and of course it's pushing up prices.

I've got a lot of sympathy for shoplifters as the majority have been let down by society and are just doing what they can to survive
Providing the don't use violence and threatening behaviour and stick to big businesses then good luck to them I say.
It's the corrupt and greedy super rich brigade that play the system and steal from us all that riles me but noone seems to care about that

Re: Shoplifting
Yeah, some of the footage you get is like watching through frosted glass - wouldn't recognise your own mother on it and it certainly won't provide any facial recognition results.ClaretFelix wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 3:52 pmAnd this depends on whether the footage is actually sent in, (quite a lot isnt) is of sufficient enough quality to make an identification of the offender (a hell of a lot isnt - certainly not able to stand up to scrutiny in court casting doubt) , and also having somebody that does actually know who the offender is and willing to put pen to paper in a statement.
And then even the best bobby can't possibly know the face of every single person in the area.
The well known shoplifters are in and out of prison all the time, the problem is the sentences are so short they don't provide anything other than a brief window of respite.
