Question on turf moor
What was the bob lord stand called before it was the bob lord stand?
Re: Question on turf moor
Can't recall it having a name - just the main stand/enclosure?
Re: Question on turf moor
The current stand has always been called the Bob Lord Stand. The stand it replaced was called the Brunshaw Road Stand.
Re: Question on turf moor
Brunshaw Road Stand/End or something like that, I think

The old stand never really had a name but it was the only stand.

Wasn't that previous to the stand that is being referred to?

Wasn’t that the Longside before it was the Longside?

Re: Question on turf moor
I always thought it was called the Brunshaw Road stand when I started going on in the fifties. My dad said it was the Brunshaw Road stand and there had been a Star Stand on the opposite side (Longside), which had been bought from the Burnley Union Star Football Club, which had gone bust in the long, distant past.
I also remember clearly that the Longside was always known as The Popular Side for many years...that’s where my dad used to stand as a young man in the thirties when there was no roof/stand .

Even when I started going on regularly in about 1957, the four sides were the Cricket Field End, the Popular Side, the Bee Hole End and the Brunshaw Road Stand.
Re: Question on turf moor
I think the star stand was before that even, pre-2nd world war.

Re: Question on turf moor
If my memory serves me well it became the Longside when the new Cricketfield Stand opened and all the boys who had previously stood there (where the singing/chanting started) moved over to the “Longside”. They weren’t aware it was called the Popular End and the Longside was easier to say and seemed to make more sense.....I was one of them who made the move.

No, Star Stand was The Popular Side, until it became The Longside, around 1971

Rumour has it the forum / message board at the time had a meltdown about the leveraged purchase of a football stand!

If that report is correct, the league champions were determined by election.

Re: Question on turf moor
I'm sure the Longside became known as that in 1970, as I distinctly remember some Liverpool fans laughing at the name "Longside " in 69/70, when I was talking to them in a pub before the game.basil6345789 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2025 8:03 pmRay Simpson and I agreed it was about 1971 when The Longside was born

Re: Question on turf moor
not sure, but to many it was "The Enclosure" the standing bit below the seated area.
think it was only a "tanner" to get in.

Re: Question on turf moor
An extra tanner (six old pence = 2.5p for those under 70) you still had to pay the standard turnstile fee to get to the Enclosure in the first place.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 12:44 amnot sure, but to many it was "The Enclosure" the standing bit below the seated area.

In my early days going on, The Longside was known as the Belvedere Rd Stand or more often just The Belvedere. Always sounded a bit posh to me

My first ever visit to the Turf was on the Brunshaw Road stand. I remember me and my dad were stood on wobbly railway sleepers.

Re: Question on turf moor
Unless it was an all ticket game you went on the ground and then paid extra to go in the Enclosure. There was also an enclosure at the front of the other side. I can’t imagine remember the gates but they’d stopped charging by the time I started going on.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 12:44 amnot sure, but to many it was "The Enclosure" the standing bit below the seated area.

Re: Question on turf moor
My first season tickets were in the Enclosure in front of the only stand on Brunshaw Road closest to the Cricket Field End. Happy days seeing Ralphy Coates tearing up the wing and crossing for Big Andy to nod home

Re: Question on turf moor
I first went to the Turf in the 68/69 Season, but I only remember it being called 'The Longside'; then again, I watched from the Beehole End back then, so I didn't need to know; it would've been three or four years later (a draw against Liverpool in the FA Cup, I can't remember the score ) before I first set foot the Longsidebasil6345789 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2025 7:47 pm...The Popular Side, until it became The Longside, around 1971

Definitely remember the fencing and gates on t'Belvedere but they were never used in my time...its only in recent times when wrinkleys reminisce that I remember them!ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 11:12 amUnless it was an all ticket game you went on the ground and then paid extra to go in the Enclosure. Saw plenty of games from the Enclosure you got drenched if it rained...never understood why you paid extra. If it was persisting down Saturday morning my Dad would tell me to be ready a bit early so we could get a decent spot on t'Belvedere under cover.....those were the days

According to the article linked about 15 posts back, it became known as the Longside in the 1930’s, based on articles in the Burnley Express of that era.
