Hah so they have. Owned by SAIC which in turn is owned by the Chinese government. Yep a long way from Oxford. The only thing remaining is the badge and that’s made in china too.

Vehicles with exhausts stink, there's nothing worse than going for a walk or cycle and all you get are a lung full of carcinogenic from the vehicles passing by. It's ironic that hospitals have no smoking on these premises policy, yet permit vehicles with exhausts. Same outside and around schools, I wouldn't allow them within a mile, but such legacy issues take longer to address.

Rubbish :D There's nothing like the roar of a powerful ICE and a lung full of exhaust gases  To quote an orange, maniac dictator "Drill baby, drill"

Seems like the gist of this thread is that if you just toddle about a bit on a daily basis, an EV is ideal, but if you want to do some substantial mileage (without having to wait around for a few hours) an EV becomes much more of an issue.

Well if you knew what you were taking about yiu would know that modern ICE vehicles emit cleaner air than they take in. Official from BMW. How do feel about being the latest State of USA? haha

Guess that depends on what you mean by toddle about a bit. If you rarely make a 200+ mile round trip then I would suggest based on range/charging alone then an EV is absolutely ideal. If you often travel more than 200 miles in a day then probably not. But I wouldn’t say driving 200 miles in a day is toddling about a bit.

Whoosh! I don’t know if you have Walmart in your area, but if you do this week’s flyer indicates they have ‘sense of humour’ on sale, maybe you should buy one. Hence the emojis. :D

I’d say it completely depends on your journey profile, your financial and environmental motivations and your home set up.

As a former company car driver and now as a self employed individual, with a home charger, I can’t find a single scenario where anything other than electric makes sense.

Company car driver -
BMW 5 series diesel estate - cost - £650 per month BIK and then 5ppm when diesel spiked and mileage allowance didn’t move
Tesla Model Y - cost - £730 per year - got cheaper to run when I got a home charger and octopus energy cheap charging. Made 4ppm on mileage

Business owner. - Jaguar I-pace (used)
- costs £300ppm lease
- drive 1200 miles per month
- charge business 45ppm / 25 ppm
- costs 5ppm to charge

As for the poster earlier talking about safety, tell me and point me to the news stories of all these electric cars spontaneously combusting? Or the increased road death or injuries since the huge spike in demand for EV’s. Look forward to reading all about them.

That's a [deleted] poor attempt dsr, at least quote something that makes an association with affordability.
Sorry, I didn't realise it wasn't obvious.

Second hand electric cars with good range are a lot more expensive than second hand petrol cars, which makes them more affordable for richer people. And homes with their own driveway are a necessity for practical use of electric cars, and people with their own driveway tend to be richer than people without. Two reasons why electric cars tend to be the preserve of the rich.

Strange post!
It was meant as a bit of tongue in cheek comment referring to voice commands. Does your 2018 model 3 not have a button on the right hand side of the steering wheel that activates the voice control? - If not, my apologies.

I found that removing the streaming services I do not use resolves this as I had the same issue. If I am not using the radio, I choose to use apple music for my choice of music streaming service.

Therefore, removing Spotify, TuneIn, caraoke etc yeilded far more accurate results when I used the voice command to play a specific song.

It is really quick and easy to add the other services back if I ever need to. Which on occasion I do in order to listen to a podcast via Spotify.

Just had my VED reminder for my Citroen EC4 that runs out of Road Tax on 31st of March.

Its £00.00 for the next 12months ... had it been due from the 1st of April it would have been £195 thanks to changes in the EV VED ...
So we got an extra year of tax free motoring RESULT 😁

For those saying the range is drastically reduced by using the heater/air con, most current EVs now come with heat pumps as standard so range is no longer greatly affected.

I'm going to have a look at the new Vauxhall Grandland Ultimate, the new Peuguot e-3008 and Renault Megane Scenic e-tech Alpine this weekend as they seem to be the best value for money at present. Anyone own or driven any of these?

I use a car club as I only need a car a couple of times a month. There are a few options of vehicle, both ICE and EV.

If I'm nipping to pick something up from supermarket , IKEA, or dropping the dog at the kennels, I'll use the VW ID3, which is super fun to drive.

Any longer journeys for work say over 300km, and I use a Golf or Polo ICE.

Horses for courses, but I prefer driving the ID3

A great point you make. Anyone can tax their car early, they don't have to wait until the date due.
If you have an EV and your VED is going to be £195 from April, tax it by 31st March and you pay £0 . That's another year of zero road tax.

Couple of weeks for me now driving my first electric car and it’s been fantastic.

If anyone is thinking of getting a Tesla if you get a referral code from another Tesla owner you can get £500 of credit for charging or buying a charger etc and the person who gave you the code gets £250

Home charger fitted was a bit pricey at £1500. Went for a mid range Hypervolt as it can link up to my energy provider Ovo for cheap charging and it also need to connect to the main electric box which couldn’t be further away from the car. Should pay back in a year.

I'm not ready to go EV. My Toyota hybrid does 80mpg ....recently I returned from Burnley to Sussex via a stop in central Birmingham to collect something from a store,,,,, when I got back £22 to fill up for E5 petrol.
My Hybrid is cheaper to run than an EV....and I fill it with petrol in minutes....no plugging in.

No I have a Citroen C5 Aircross PHEV doug which I have owned for 2 years the Jag was swapped in for it.

We run 2 Citroens (which if you read my posts you would know) one is a C4 EV (the wifes car) which we have gad over 3 years and my C5 PHEV ... 😁

I have also stated we have never used a public charger as the EC4 is used as a runabout for journeys of under 50 miles etc ... keep up lad 😉

I wish the public chargers cost what they did 3 years ago.

Used to be able to charge at IONITY for 16p a KWh because of the partnership with polestar. (Think without it was 25p).

The exact same charger cost me 74p a kWh today.

This is the highest inflationary increase I’ve seen of any product in the cost of living crisis.

Thats the main reason I didn't go full Electric on both cars ... was toying with a Polestar then decided to go PHEV and bought the Citroen C5 ... I love the C4 but a 180 - 200 range (150 to 180 winter) isn't viable for long journeys.

Next year will be going down to one car when VED road tax kicks in (as the C4 was needing taxing on 31st of March I got another 12 months free) so will be sticking with the C5 PHEV.

Reminder to all EV owners ... Tax (VED) your car for free for 12 months before the Gov starts charging you from April 1st ... You will have 11 months free VED.

Just been on Martin Lewis's Money show, and even if your motor was taxed a few months ago it will be taxed for nowt till March next year, if you tax it again today. 👍

A lad at work has an EV, his tax is due in August, but he has just taxed it for 12 months at the weekend. There's no limit to how early you can tax a vehicle.
As VED tends to be increased 1st April each year, taxing in March for 12 months means you are always ahead of any increases.

Whoosh! I don’t know if you have Walmart in your area, but if you do this week’s flyer indicates they have ‘sense of humour’ on sale, maybe you should buy one. Hence the emojis. :D

BTW I corrected your spelling errors 8-)

I'm going to have a look at the new Vauxhall Grandland Ultimate, the new Peuguot e-3008 and Renault Megane Scenic e-tech Alpine this weekend as they seem to be the best value for money at present. Anyone own or driven any of these?
How did it go Foshiznik?

Yes, I'd love an EV but like millions of others in the UK who live in an apartment, there is no infrastructure at all to charge the cars. So no option really

Oh my you really have got your knickers in a twist about my post which was written with an abundance humour, hence the use of emojis for emphasis. :D  You really do not have a sense of humour, laugh, it’s good for you! I don’t care if your Beemer emits nothing at all or it emits black smoke! I don’t care if some EV drivers claim they’re saving the planet! The money countries are wasting on so called environmental solutions is disgraceful, they’re merely trying to buy votes from ‘tree huggers’. The money would be far better used for affordable housing, improved health care, education etc.

We’re looking to buy a new family car to take us up and down the country (and abroad), after our current ‘big car’ is falling apart after 10 valiant years of use.

We were going to buy an EV (id4 or Enyaq) — they were both great to drive, and I’m not too concerned about range, although I anticipated a bit of swearing trying to work out how to schedule a charge over night.

However, we buy to own cars, and I’m not comfortable with leasing, which seems to be the best way to own one as the battery life span issue is swerved. So, we’re looking at a petrol mild hybrid.

When it comes to replace the run around, I think electric will be a strong contender then.

If consumers were given more incentive or guarantee around battery capacity and longevity, I’d be more assured. 8 years warranty that will only trigger when battery has lost 31% of its range isn’t enough for me.

My Toyota Corolla with 32 miles on the clock cost me £23,000
Great car — I looked at these, but used car prices are very high for these! Can I ask when you bought it?

I've been considering an EV for a couple of years either through my work lease scheme, loan or PCP etc. Not in a position to buy outright.

One big problem we have is we only have on street parking at home. No public charging points in our immediate area that I'm aware of. Is anyone aware of a solution for home charging without a drive/garage? (without moving house :)) we might move at some point but not for a year or two at least.

I do about 30 miles per day with the occasional longer trip e.g. 350 mile round trip for a weekend away.

Any advice from those with EV's is appreciated.

We’ve just gone to an EV for Mrs_W car
Whilst we were waiting for charger to be fitted we took a weekly trip to the new services at the end of M65 in Colne to charge up.
Only takes an hour, so popped to Starbucks and had a coffee whilst waiting.

We’ve now got a charger fitted at home so as well as saving on charging (only cost £2.50 to charge overnight on the tariff we have) I’m now also saving on not buying a coffee

Out of interest, how many miles in a week was Mrs_W doing between charges at Starbucks before you had the home charger fitted?

Probably around 200-250 mostly driving to/from work but also had to take a few trips over to Rochdale & Bury
