Sheffield Weds in trouble
Sheffield Weds in trouble
BBC reports
Sheffield Wednesday have been handed restrictions over spending for the next three transfer windows after failing to pay staff wages on time.
The restrictions will prevent the club from carrying out any transfers or loans which involve a fee for this summer's window and the two in 2026.
That restriction is currently running alongside their registration embargo which was imposed a fortnight ago, preventing the club from signing any new players, even free transfers, until they have paid outstanding wages in full.

Sad they seem to keep threatening to stabilise only to go through yet another meltdown as a club. They should be a comfortable championship outfit given there size but looks like another difficult season ahead.

Should be a huge club, badly managed for far too long now.
The grounds falling to bits and the future looks really grim

Proper sleeping giant of a club. Must be galling to see clubs like Wrexham and Birmingham being chosen to receive the celebrity cash

it's worse than that article (unless I missed it), if the players don't get paid next week then those under contract can leave for free.

I actually like Sheffield Wednesday. They were my second team as a kid simply because Chris Waddle played for them. It's a bit of a shame imo it's been left to rot like that

Yeah, it’s a real shame what Chansiri is doing to a proper big old club. It’s going to be so hard to turn it round, a huge crumbling stadium, debt, a poor squad.. the future looks bleak for them.

Birmingham are arguably also a big club, although they have never won the league. Wrexham certainly aren't, though.randomclaret2 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 20, 2025 7:32 pmProper sleeping giant of a club. Must be galling to see clubs like Wrexham and Birmingham being chosen to receive the celebrity cash

It is a shame. I don't go in for all this gloating when clubs are hit with shocking owners like this.NottsClaret wrote: ↑Fri Jun 20, 2025 9:18 pmYeah, it’s a real shame what Chansiri is doing to a proper big old club. I'm no fan of Sheffield Wednesday to be honest and during the three years I lived in the city it was always Sheffield United who I had a preference for, but football supporters deserve better than this and shouldn't be put through it in the way they are, and the way supporters of other clubs have, notably recently those at Reading.

Spot on living amongst Reading fans till last Year we had constant update and the gutless way the EFL respond to rouge owners dissected daily.
The ownership tests of the EFL are a completely broken set of rules totally discredited by recent teams struggles. I suspect this is as was said recently just the start of teams going under.
If Wednesday with regular crowds over 20,000 are in trouble I fear for the future for teams in Div 1 and 2 like Stanley with sub 10,000 gates.

The majority of the first team were not paid on time again. The unpaid players can give notice to terminate their contracts from tomorrow and become free agents.

I don’t know what the solution is other than to force out the owner. Shocking state of affairs and once rid, there is a lot of building work to be done.

Brighton was a bad one. Bought by Bill Archer from Mellor who owned Focus DIY. He sold the ground to build a retail park (including a Focus). Brighton got virtually nothing from the sale and were left homeless. Had to go and play at Gillingham for a while.Buxtonclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jun 30, 2025 9:49 pmI can remember shoving a quid in a bucket for Brighton at a London ground ......

That wasock at Bury had similar 'get rich quick plans' too, didn't he? Only it didn't work for him.
Think I'd gone to watch Charlton with some old friends I'd gone to see, from my London Days, when I saw the bucket.

Their best players - arguably - last year were the U21 keeper Beadle (on loan from Brighton) and Shea Charles, CM on loan from Southampton
We should be looking at Charles in my opinion

Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
Stanley with circa 2,000- 2,750 support unless Bradford are in town bringing huge numbers.
I understand Andy Holt is now putting no more money in, insisting they become self sustainable. The closure of their academy is the first step. I suspect dark days lie ahead for them.
I live in Accy at the minute, (last 21 years) but couldn't imagine supporting them sadly. The standard is poor. The matchday experience is poor. The tickets are dear.
If a group of us say when there is an international break etc. decide to go on, it's just not worthwhile or enjoyable experience going on.
I wish them well.

Stockport and Tranmere did it for years to avoid clashing with their bigger neighbours, but that was often in the days when there was no televised football on a Friday night.CyrilEbokiPoh wrote: ↑Tue Jul 01, 2025 11:15 pmThey would do better if they could change to play Friday nights like Tranmere used to to avoid playing at same time as us and rovers.

Nowadays fans can't afford both games with the high cost of following a Friday night second team.Gone are the times when Div1 and 2 games cost under £10.

Sadly the Premier League have dragged prices up right across the board - even non-league games now are too expensive.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 02, 2025 9:27 amNowadays fans can't afford both games with the high cost of following a Friday night second team.Gone are the times when Div1 and 2 games cost under £10.
Having said that, Sheffield Wednesday, the subject of this thread, have taken price increases to a new level.

Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
6 players at weds have given their 15 day notice of intention to leave as they have not been paid . Winds is one of them
Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
It’s getting worse with debts to clubs for players bought and to HMRC being added. The 6 players have to wait 15 days to see if they are paid before they can leave.
They have to settle up with the players, HMRC and the owed clubs before it is lifted. Which is likely to see it remain in place for even longer. Like last time, the latest breach is likely to be taken into account in conjunction with the previous one as the EFL take action against the club.
Points deductions likely. Ground sharing with United possible.
https://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/footbal ... fl-5208140
Rangers had similar problems in 2012 and went into administration so were demoted to Div 3
11 players left including Kyle Lafferty He joined Swiss side FC Sion and went on to play for Palermo, Norwich and Caykur Rizespor and Birmingham City on loan ending his career at Kilmarnock. Others were sold in a fire sale.
I wonder if we were owed money for him.
The spectre of a repeat has been averted by the club being bought by San Francisco 49ers - will they be a Leeds feeder club?

Yep, BBC Sport reporting that wages going unpaid for a second successive month.
Hull also now placed under a transfer embargo, meaning they can't pay a fee for a player until January 2027. Hull expected to appeal.
BBC Humberside "understands" that HC owe money to a number of creditors, including to other clubs for transfers.

What a mess - particularly Sheff Wed & Morecambe.
Re: Sheffield Weds in trouble
Weds owner Dejphon Chansiri owes more than £4million in football debts including £2.2m to HMRC — which will have to be paid by whoever buys the club.

Francesco Guardascione is heading up a consortium pursuing a purchase of Sheffield Wednesday. Things have been moving quickly.

Another bizarre twist
New owner saddled with this
Prior to Covid Sheffield Wednesdays owner decided to introduce 10-year season tickets.
the 10 years wouldn’t kick in until they were promoted to the Premier League.
The season ticket would last until 2035 if promotion to the Premier League was reached by 2025, but thats no longer possible fans who bought it will be able to attend each home game for free, with the 10 years not beginning until promotion is gained.

Selling your better players off cheaply to pay that month's wage bill doesn't feel a sustainable strategy.
