Sheffield Wednesday have been handed restrictions over spending for the next three transfer windows after failing to pay staff wages on time.
The restrictions will prevent the club from carrying out any transfers or loans which involve a fee for this summer's window and the two in 2026.
That restriction is currently running alongside their registration embargo which was imposed a fortnight ago, preventing the club from signing any new players, even free transfers, until they have paid outstanding wages in full.

I actually like Sheffield Wednesday. They were my second team as a kid simply because Chris Waddle played for them. It's a bit of a shame imo it's been left to rot like that

Birmingham are arguably also a big club, although they have never won the league. Wrexham certainly aren't, though.

It is a shame. I don't go in for all this gloating when clubs are hit with shocking owners like this.

I'm no fan of Sheffield Wednesday to be honest and during the three years I lived in the city it was always Sheffield United who I had a preference for, but football supporters deserve better than this and shouldn't be put through it in the way they are, and the way supporters of other clubs have, notably recently those at Reading.

The ownership tests of the EFL are a completely broken set of rules totally discredited by recent teams struggles. I suspect this is as was said recently just the start of teams going under.
If Wednesday with regular crowds over 20,000 are in trouble I fear for the future for teams in Div 1 and 2 like Stanley with sub 10,000 gates.

Brighton was a bad one. Bought by Bill Archer from Mellor who owned Focus DIY. He sold the ground to build a retail park (including a Focus). Brighton got virtually nothing from the sale and were left homeless. Had to go and play at Gillingham for a while.

Squads total value is around £20m quite a few oldies and no one valued over £3m.

Their best players - arguably - last year were the U21 keeper Beadle (on loan from Brighton) and Shea Charles, CM on loan from Southampton

I understand Andy Holt is now putting no more money in, insisting they become self sustainable. The closure of their academy is the first step. I suspect dark days lie ahead for them.

I live in Accy at the minute, (last 21 years) but couldn't imagine supporting them sadly. The standard is poor. The matchday experience is poor. The tickets are dear.
If a group of us say when there is an international break etc. decide to go on, it's just not worthwhile or enjoyable experience going on.

Sadly the Premier League have dragged prices up right across the board - even non-league games now are too expensive.

Having said that, Sheffield Wednesday, the subject of this thread, have taken price increases to a new level.

6 players at weds have given their 15 day notice of intention to leave as they have not been paid . Winds is one of them

It’s getting worse with debts to clubs for players bought and to HMRC being added. The 6 players have to wait 15 days to see if they are paid before they can leave.
They have to settle up with the players, HMRC and the owed clubs before it is lifted. Which is likely to see it remain in place for even longer. Like last time, the latest breach is likely to be taken into account in conjunction with the previous one as the EFL take action against the club.
Points deductions likely. Ground sharing with United possible.

Rangers had similar problems in 2012 and went into administration so were demoted to Div 3
11 players left including Kyle Lafferty He joined Swiss side FC Sion and went on to play for Palermo, Norwich and Caykur Rizespor and Birmingham City on loan ending his career at Kilmarnock. Others were sold in a fire sale.
I wonder if we were owed money for him.

Hull also now placed under a transfer embargo, meaning they can't pay a fee for a player until January 2027. Hull expected to appeal.

BBC Humberside "understands" that HC owe money to a number of creditors, including to other clubs for transfers.

Prior to Covid Sheffield Wednesdays owner decided to introduce 10-year season tickets.
the 10 years wouldn’t kick in until they were promoted to the Premier League.
The season ticket would last until 2035 if promotion to the Premier League was reached by 2025, but thats no longer possible fans who bought it will be able to attend each home game for free, with the 10 years not beginning until promotion is gained.
