Bid rejected for chris wood
Re: Bid rejected for chris wood
No we didn't - we may make over £40m (United take a cut on Keane) and we only get the rest based on conditions being met.

Link? I don't know who the Derby Chairman is or who the manager was at that time, but I certainly don't remember either of them commenting on the value of the transfer.KefkaClaret wrote:Derby would have happily taken less for Hendrick if we didn't bid for him 7 times increasing the bid ever so slightly before panicking on deadline day and offering £10m. The fee wasn't £18.5M, we will only receive that if Gray plays for England.claretandy wrote:no they didn't, watford announced it as a club record fee, previous record was more than £13.5m.

Why on earth would you be angry? Whether you mean the supporters or the management, there's nothing to be angry about. If I offered to buy your house for £10,000, would you be angry? There's no reason to be.KefkaClaret wrote:There's a difference between negotiation and being downright insulting. Imagine if Everton bid £12m for Keane in the summer. You would be angry.
An insult is like a drink - it only hurts you if you take it. If someone says to you "I would like to buy one of your possessions for £x" and you think it's worth far more, you really shouldn't waste your energy getting angry or feeling hurt.

Yup, from what I've heard Madge is going to be the striking new addition to the team and a worthy recipient of the No7 shirt. A strong link has already been established between her and the club so it was only natural to give her a more up front role. The backroom staff are confident she can score as many times as she wants this season.Vegas Claret wrote:have we signed a striker yet ?
She has a strong independent character, superb physical attributes, excellent movement off the ball, an abundance of creativity, the ability to confound opposing defenders and stop them in their tracks, works well in a group and she is capable of playing up front when called upon.
The downside is that she could prove to be a big distraction for the lads in the dressing room.

Re: Bid rejected for chris wood
I watched the young Wood make his football league debut when on loan from West Brom to Brighton. I'm sure as a more experienced player is value has risen but I'd be pretty underwhelmed if we brought him in for anything like the money that is being reported. He is more Sam Vokes than Jermaine Defoe....and I think he's probably a poor mans Sam.

Re: Bid rejected for chris wood
Without being funny, this shouts out to me that you've not seen anything/much of him for around 6 years. I, unfortunately, sit through a lot of Leeds games on a Saturday afternoon as they seem to always be on the bloody tele when we go to the sports bar in Leeds. He's a very good goalscorer and think he could do a job in the Premier League, with the right club. Definitely not a Defoe, like you say, but then again, neither is Harry Kane. However, other clubs are sniffing around him, so I don't see us landing him anyway. He's meant to be good friends with Taylor though, so that may help us.turfytopper wrote:I watched the young Wood make his football league debut when on loan from West Brom to Brighton. Spot on. I only saw him in Brighton's promotion season as i was a staff member. He may well have matured into a very good player...... Back then he was direct and physical...but not much else.FactualFrank wrote:Without being funny, this shouts out to me that you've not seen anything/much of him for around 6 years.

And just to add to that turfy, we all know he can hit a ball

Wood scored 27 goals in 44 appearances.
Vokes got 20 goals in 39 appearances.
(According to Wikipedia anyway!)

I honestly don't know if Wood is a better player than Vokes as I haven't seen enough of him but using stats won't prove it one way or another.Blyclaret wrote:Facts prove your wrong.

Vokes what his his tally 15 ?
In Vokes' two most successful seasons in the Championship, he partnered two prolific strikers rather than being the main striker that Wood is.
Vokes has also played, and scored, including a current good run of scoring in the Premier League. Wood hasn't.

Lets get real-not taking anything from our victory but it went our way yesterday. Two sent off, a Chelsea goal dis-allowed . Watford who finished below us had two strong strikers on the bench including Andre, and Deeny is still to come back from injury.
Our options yesterday were Walters and Barnes. If we are to stay up we need goals, Without Keane we need to be scoring two or more goals to win games

and that was before gray went, 3 needed, pacy striker or wide man or number 10 ings type, plus centre half.Archer wrote:He said:

Re: Bid rejected for chris wood
I make it 6 out, Gray, Robbo, Kights, Barton, Keane, Boyd and 5 in Legzdins, Bardsley, Walters, Cork, Taylor.
IMO we still need a centre back and a quick man up front as a minimum and no outgoings

Re: Bid rejected for chris wood
With Vokes I really don't think Chris Wood is the type of striker we should be looking for. We need someone quick to compliment him if needed

Re: Bid rejected for chris wood
Why do people suggest that Chris Wood isn't quick? It takes me back to my ealier post. Most people on here you can tell have never seen him play. Wood is quicker than Vokes and is often in the right place at the right time. Bring him in and provide more competition for Vokes in a 4-5-1 and he can also partner Vokes in a 4-4-2.
Re: Bid rejected for chris wood
I think Wood is quicker than any other forward we have , although I stand to be corrected if he isn't.

Re: Bid rejected for chris wood
Must admit to being more than a little bemused following our £12 million plus offer for Chris Wood...
That was until the formation and ultimately the performance yesterday.
4-5-1 will require two big lads vying for the position up top who know where the net is.
Fully understand after watching that brilliant performance yesterday.

It doesn't take much, but I'm pretty sure you're right. But anyway, you don't score 27 goals in a season unless you know where the net is - he scored more than Gray.joey13 wrote:I think Wood is quicker than any other forward we have , although I stand to be corrected if he isn't.

Or did he have a much improved season in a side built around him? The Leeds fans hated him, then he knocks in 25 goals..... Which Chris Wood would we get? The one who cant hit a barn door or the one who scored 25 goals in a season?FactualFrank wrote:He did 12 in 35, I think. So call it 1 in 3.

Re: Bid rejected for chris wood
The thing is, I live in Leeds and I sit through quite a lot of Leeds games. In my opinion, Taylor is better than Ward - and Ward is a bloody good player!.. and Chris Wood is better than Vokes. It's not what Burnley fans want to hear, unless he signs for us, but 4-5-1.. a man upfront on his own, Wood imo will do better and score more goals. But I also think having them both upfront in a 4-4-2 would work very well. Not sure what else I can say really. I rate him, and would love him to come to Burnley. He's friends with Taylor, that I do know, as I know people who know Taylor. Will that make a difference to our chances of signing him? Who knows.KRBFC wrote:Or did he have a much improved season in a side built around him? The Leeds fans hated him, then he knocks in 25 goals..... Which Chris Wood would we get? Re: Bid rejected for chris wood
Many games and in fact relegation will be determined this year by the ability of teams to change games by having key people on the bench. I am amazed how many comebacks happen in the last 10-15 minutes of games. We were sadly lacking in this area last year. Burnley fans get too protective about the starting 11. There is no way Vokes will play or start all 38 games. Walters is going to be a great utility squad player, Barnes is great for bringing on when legs are tired and as yesterday in the final 15 minutes when your team is under the cosh. There is no other PL team so devoid of strikers apart from Brighton. Woods would be a good signing. A player like Clukas who can chip in with goals (who would probably replace Arfield/JBG), and a commanding centre half would give us a squad more than capable of a top 15 finish
