Incident in Barcelona
Van mounts pavement and ploughs into several people. Sad times but it's unsurprising and it's sad that it is that way. Hope there are no fatalities

Re: Incident in Barcelona
I was there last week with my wife and kids. We really loved the day walking down Las Ramblas and taking in the culture of the City. Some of the architecture is magnificent. How horrible to think that others doing exactly the same have been injured in this way. The world is a mad place at the moment. Nobody knows where the next incident will happen. Fingers crossed there aren't any fatalities.

Re: Incident in Barcelona
Quite right, a car ploughed into a Paris restaurant on Monday killing a girl and injuring 13 others however at present it is not thought to be a terrorist incident, the driver being suicidal and on drugs at the time.claretandy wrote:Hang on a minute lets not jump to conclusions ......
"France’s Interior Ministry has said the driver, who is around 30 years old, was apparently suicidal and the incident is not believed to be linked to terrorism." - Metro
So yes lets wait for more info.

The Economist, tomorrow. will make a different argument:Damo wrote:I thought he did denounce the Nazis if that's what you mean?

I don't think it's the appropriate place to make jokes to be honest. I agree, some responses are poor but that's not unusual for this forum. I'd suggest reporting any posts you find to be in poor taste.dpinsussex wrote:Trying to lighten up a thread that had gone way OT
I live in Barcelona. I have friends who were around the centre of the city. My wife was due to be coming into the centre around that time. Thankfully she's okay. I'd just ask that people show respect considering a lot of people have been injured and some have unfortunately lost their lives.
Also, I'd ask that people refrain from reporting rumour as fact. We had that problem on the Manchester terrorist attack thread as well.

Re: Incident in Barcelona
Reuters reporting that at least 13 have died. Horrible.
Edit - This is still not confirmed. Police only confirming 1 dead and 32 injured. Obviously that's quite conflicting information.

Correct, for the purposes of adding a bit of balance to what I thought was a needless double standard comment. I thought you'd have been able to see that but then again...Greenmile wrote:You're the one who mentioned Trump.

Re: Incident in Barcelona
Awful again. Murder by deranged scumbags. Let's keep an open mind about who they are as they could even be Christian or Catholic extremists for all we know.

Spain is not immune to domestic terror incidents, (ETA) for instance so anything is possible, don't suppose the victims will care who committed the attack TBH.Blackrod wrote:Awful again. Re: Incident in Barcelona
Thank you, I appreciate that. I'm still contacting people but as far as I know, everyone I know is safe. Just been to the local hospital to donate blood after I saw an appeal. Thankfully, they actually have more than enough blood at that particular hospital so it's not needed at this moment. They've asked people to come back in the coming days since the existing blood they have obviously has an expiration date.gandhisflipflop wrote:I hope everyone connected with you is ok.

At least you know all your loved ones are safe Indigo, and you can offer some assistance however small,it is after acts like this that sport pales into insignificance.IndigoLake wrote:Thank you, I appreciate that. Re: Incident in Barcelona
Absolutely, safety first. My wife is staying outside of Barcelona tonight. She would have taken a train into the centre to come home but she'll stay with a friend since transport is down. Even if it's running in some hours I think it's best she waits until tomorrow morning to be on the safe side. It is an ongoing incident after all. Was uplifting to see plenty of people making the effort to give blood - good will always win through in the end.tiger76 wrote:At least you know all your loved ones are safe Indigo, and you can offer some assistance however small,it is after acts like this that sport pales into insignificance.

Catalan police confirm they have arrested one man. Nobody is holed up in a bar with hostages as has been reported in some cases.
Catalan government confirm 13 dead and at least 50 injured.

Pretty grim stuff.
Slightly o/t but had a row with my missus about holidays this year. Ordinarily would go to south of France/Spain. She dug her heels in as worried about crowds /airports etc.
Guesswho won - st Ives was lovely

Just had to call the wife's mum and dad to check they are ok. Fortunately they'd just left Barcelona at lunch time after boarding a train for Blanes at placa de catalunya. The wife and I were there two weeks ago.
