Re: A win for fans re Christmas Eve
I have no problem with Christmas Eve games and would be totally happy to see a game or two on Christmas Day. The NFL games at Thanksgiving and Christmas are great!
Re: A win for fans re Christmas Eve
Christmas Day is the family day.
I can see the argument for no game on Christmas Eve because they're also playing on Boxing Day, but the travel argument isn't really valid given that public transport is worse on Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Re: A win for fans re Christmas Eve
Maybe christmas eves that fall on a sunday could possibly be considered a family day, but it's a normal working day for those that work, so unless you work with your family then how could it possibly be a family day?

Dont thats too much common sense.Walton wrote:Here is Northern Rail's Christmas timetable for Christmas 2016

Now how is staging games on Boxing Day, when there is no train service running, more convenient for travelling fans than staging games on Christmas Eve, when there is a full service running, and then a skeleton service?
Re: A win for fans re Christmas Eve
I think the point is it should be a family day instead of being taken over by yet more commercialism. I won't be attending any football on Christmas Eve even if Burnley are playing. I don't expect others to agree.

Since when has Christmas eve been regarded as a family day? It's never been a public holiday, not at least in modern times.
What about Boxing Day with regards to commercialism?

Re: A win for fans re Christmas Eve
Maybe it is for some, for others not, but it has never been a football day and even clubs have come out against the potential for moving games to Christmas Eve.UpTheBeehole wrote:Christmas Eve is a working day, not a family day. There are plenty of posters saying this within this thread.
Not sure how anyone can compare with Boxing Day which has always been a football day. I know there are public transport issues on that day, ones that weren't the case years ago, but I think there would be an outcry if people wanted to stop Boxing Day fixtures. Yes, Christmas Eve is a working day for some, albeit a lot less this year with it falling on a Sunday, but the plans were to hold a match into the evening of Christmas Eve which is very much, for many, a family time.
Re: A win for fans re Christmas Eve
It's being compared with Boxing Day because one of the main arguments against the games on Christmas Eve is that travelling to the game would be an issue.

Re: A win for fans re Christmas Eve
I understand that Paul, but there is one big difference in that all teams have always played on Boxing Day (weather permitting) but Christmas Eve is a date that has not previously been considered for league football, not even when it has fallen on a Saturday.Tall Paul wrote:It's being compared with Boxing Day because one of the main arguments against the games on Christmas Eve is that travelling to the game would be an issue.
This was all about challenging the PL & Sky's attempts to move a game (or games) to Christmas Eve from the previous day. Moving of games over a season has to be acceptable because that's where the money comes from, but supporters organisations involved in the Premier League Fans Group campaigned strongly against moving games to Christmas Eve, something I am fully in support of.
Re: A win for fans re Christmas Eve
And I understand all that, and agree that they shouldn't have the games on Christmas Eve, but they can't really use the travel argument while they're happy for games to take place on bank holidays with far worse public transport availability.ClaretTony wrote:I understand that Paul, but there is one big difference in that all teams have always played on Boxing Day (weather permitting) but Christmas Eve is a date that has not previously been considered for league football, not even when it has fallen on a Saturday.

Re: A win for fans re Christmas Eve
This is what the CEO of the FSF said:
There are far fewer public transport provisions on Boxing Day, and New Years Day.
I just cannot get my head around what the FSF are protesting about here. They're getting it massively wrong. They're misrepresenting football fans.
Which implies it has everything to do with transport availability.“We welcome this development in guaranteeing there will be no 4pm kick-offs on Christmas Eve,” said FSF’s CEO, Kevin Miles. “While we understand that it is a normal working day for many, the complications Christmas Eve brings, not least with the provision of public transport, means that a late afternoon or evening kick-off would be impossible for many supporters.”

You've decided to read into that whatever you like. Kevin Miles is absolutely right in what he says in terms of the potential for games to be MOVED. You cannot compare with the other days you mention because they have always been football days. If you don't understand that, you are totally misunderstanding the whole thing.
But if you thing strongly about it, contact the FSF with your concerns.

Leicester local paper saying this isn’t being moved.vinrogue wrote:Surely the implications for us is are that if Man Utd at Leicester is selected to play Christmas Eve at 1.30, would our game against Utd on Boxing day be moved to the 27th and on TV too?
Although this is because there is a Rugby game on Christmas Eve in Leicester.

Just a normal day in the countries where most of the people will be watching the games on TV.

What is stupid about football being played on Bank Holidays? A lot of people have the day off, it's not a normal full working day therefore more people free to go to a football match.Walton wrote:It's a normal day for the working population. There's nothing special about it, and as many people have said on this thread already, it's stupid that football is instead played on the bank holidays instead of a normal working day, especially with Xmas eve this year falling on a Sunday.

Also don’t get that point. Why would you want a game playing on a normal working day instead of the bank holiday ? Wouldn’t you miss it?Healeywoodclaret wrote:

Listen, the supporter groups want this, so let's get behind them, regardless of any sense whatsoever.

Re: A win for fans re Christmas Eve
Games on Xmas Eve wouldn't be such an issue if there was common sense applied.
Having a northern team play a southern team on Xmas Eve is just daft.
No one would get that upset if Brighton played Bournemouth , or if Derby played Forest for example.
Arsenal Vs Liverpool is just to far to travel on Xmas Eve.
With careful planning it's workable and doesn't need to be written off.

Why is It? And if somebody feels it is then don't go!Sidney1st wrote:Arsenal Vs Liverpool is just to far to travel on Xmas Eve.
People that feel they HAVE to attend EVERY single game and that it should suit their requirements down to the detail, need to **** off.

Re: A win for fans re Christmas Eve
Fair enough Sid.
May I add as my final thought on this, football has changed and is still changing, the supporter pitch side (attending) isn't anywhere near as important as the casual football fan watching from his comfy setee, we know this, it's what has made us rich, so why fight It?

Incase you didn't see it, I'm for football on Xmas Eve, I just think it needs better planning.

I’d love to see the Polices reaction to suggestions of playing local derbies like Forest v Derby on Christmas Eve.
Perhaps a bit better planning that that.

If Christmas eve is now just a normal working day and not a family day then no one will be able to go to the game as everyone would be at work. I'm confused.

No need for it. Plenty of other days for football as it is.

Re: A win for fans re Christmas Eve
We should scrap football on good friday. Easter sunday. And easter monday not forgetting mothers day. All family days. Thankfully fathers days in summer but hopefuly the world cup considers it in future.
