Up until getting relegated in 2004 Leeds well over 50% of their existence in the top flight and in that time had won the league 4 times. You can spin it anyway you want but Leeds have a decent history had a decade of dominance and despite the mess they are in now still have a massive support.
When was this Fourth League Title?
When they won it in ‘92, it was their third.

put it this way eight decades 40s 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s 2000s and the current decade

Leeds have spent at least part of all but two OUTSIDE the topflight ... only in the 70s and 90s were they always a topflight club .. and both decades are now vanishing into memory :)

Now then Devil don't go putting the blame on me (don't put the blame on me - you got me singing now). My reference to Bradford was only fleeting and was meant to say that they should have similar support but for some reason Bradford don't and it is a very big place.

I wrongly assume the poster was correct about Bradford coming from nowhere but you corrected us both on that fact and I accepted I was wrong and that neither club had come from nothing and nowhere. The club has been completely mismanaged for years and that's why its on its arse but it wont take much to get it going forward again if they get the right owners. I know people on here hate it but they have great support and take thousands everywhere and those numbers would only grow if they got back in the Prem

Staggering that people believe this.

Leeds, as a city, is absolutely mad about football. They all support Leeds too.

They can't go anywhere without singing about Leeds, and as for pride in who they support and where they're from it knocks Burnley fans, and many other clubs, into a cocked hat.

I don't actually mind the city of Leeds, good night out IMHO

As for the football club, I think the fact that their support is so good no matter which league they are in is what irks us clarets.

We are still in A decade whether it has finished or not !?!?! ...and Leeds have spent it outside the topflight - I wasn't comparing Leeds to Burnley ..I've barely missed a home game since 1973 so I know our history only too well ..

Did you spend those years at Elland Road are you a Premier Leagie like all the closet Mancs and Scousers who have suddenly become Clarets when it suits them ?

You keep telling us what a big club Leeds are ..we are a small club so what ?

It is quite big though. And their supporters are somewhat troublesome at times. They often have difficulty in observing silences it seems as well. However if you ask Stockport fans about us they used to have a pretty poor opinion of us as well.

Doesn't irk me ..they attract support from all over Yorkshire ..you'd have to ask those who live in towns with League clubs of their own why they choose Leeds ....

I schooled in North Yorkshire and until Revie came along nobody supported Leeds. A few for Sheff Wed but most were Manure, Arsenal, Newcastle or Sunderland. None for the Smoggies either and they were nearer than any of them. As usual it was success that brought them out of the woodwork. What irks people is that for a talentless team they are never off Sky and all the undeserved cash that brings them.

Consider this SD enjoys considerable autonomy at Burnley - yes ?

How do you think that compares with the way successive chairman have run Leeds United ? Did that list of dismissed managers enjoy a good level of autonomy on the playing side ?

Most people would suggest not ... why would he be a good fit at a club where the boardroom influences team selection ?

He wouldn't put up with it .

I think they needed each other - Taylor was the genius who knew just which players to bring in but he was never going to be a manager in his own right.

When a manager goes into a new club, a club that has just won the league title, you just don't approach it the way he did. The players were against him from the start because what he'd said of them publicly and then he went in and told them to throw all their medals away because they'd won it by cheating. I actually agree with Clough on that, but you don't go in like that.

As for Clough, who I thought should have been given the England job, I had one dealing with him in 1982 through Lancaster City FC. I found him to be a horrible, horrible man who had no consideration for others. His dealings with Lancaster were a disgrace.

Leeds is the country’s 4th biggest city isn’t it?
They have one 2 tier stand, and it’s hardly ever open. Massive support? Don’t make me wee. They can’t fill their ground for normal league games. Sure they can for Chelsea and manure, but for the league games they are involved in, their home support is absolutely shocking. They are a one club city of millions, and STILL they can’t fill the ground. And as for knocking our support into a cocked hat, it’s not even close. They can’t touch us.

Sure they sell out for away games. They should do. There’s millions of em. Where are they when they are at home? Bellend rd hardly filled. Where was their fantastic support in league one? The argument that they were the best supported club in that league is irrelevant when they were competing with small towns. Millions of people in and around Leeds, and bellend rd has empty seats. That NOT great support from a football mad City is it?

Like it or not they have a much bigger support than Burnley and as for your facts about the size of their city (not that is has any relevance to whose got the bigger support apart from being one of the many causations) 750k is hardly millions which probably sums up your level of Knowledge about Leeds

I don’t expect my knowledge about Leeds is as good as yours... you’re a fan. But if you think Leeds and the surrounding catchment area isn’t counted in the millions, then it’s not just your choice of football teams that’s questionable.

Thought you were fed up of this thread anyway?...

Edit: 750k v 75k. Greater numbers for sure, but do Leeds regularly achieve ten times more than us? Have they EVER achieved that? Of course they have more supporters. But are they better supported? Of course they aren’t. Only a Leeds fan would argue they are.

Im a Burnley fan who just lives in Leeds. How you define better is subjective and Ive only heard Burnley fans use the % of population definition because guess what it puts us at the top.

I dont give a sh*t who has the best or most fans as its all d*ck waving sh*t. I support Burnley whether we have a 100 fans or 100,000 and I dont think us as a club or as fans are any better or worse than Brighton, Wigan, Yeovil, Man Utd, Leeds or any other fans.

Its you lot who are really precious and cant bare to see any other club praised without bringing back to Burnley. Leeds are well supported for obvious reasons and we do unbelievable well to get the support we do for such a small town. Not sure why there is so much animosity towards accepting Leeds have a good support.

The city is football mad and on a larger scale is very similar to Burnley in that respect and our fans have an awful lot more in common than people care to admit or realise. Any how if your world revolves so much round Burnley FC you are obsessed to the point of lacking any objectivity then fair enough but seems a bit insular to me

Last Five Championship Season Average - 26,152 - 14,490 Burnley Average Last 5 Championship seasons
Crowd As Percentage of Population Leeds - 3.67% - 19.85% Burnley Crowds 5 x Larger Per head of Population
Crowd as a percentage of ground capacity 69% - 66% Burnley

Even If you want to add The population that Burnley FC pull from un opposed by another football Club by including Pendle
It's only around 170,000 and including shares of Great Harwood, Accrington & Rossendale West Yorkshire you could raise it to 250.000 still would make the crowds against populous around 6% against Leeds 3.67%

Though you'd then have to look At Football Clubs competing for their Support
Bradford & Huddersfield to the West Sharing a lot of people
Virtually un opposed to the North East & South (York, Hull & Doncaster miles away & two are minnows)

To the East of Burnley Bradford and Huddersfield but hardly any population OH & MIGHTY LEEDS
To the South Manchester Utd, Manchester City, 2 of the biggest richest Clubs in the World
To the West Bolton, Blackburn Rovers & Preston Etc
Further to the West Liverpool & Everton
To the North of Pendle Very sparsely populated and if you look at Skipton for example, it's Yorkshire and Leeds have at least as big a pull.

If You do the exercise, that sets Burnleys territory At 250,000, for Leeds too, then they would be heading for way way over a million people and they'd be heading for 2% against Burnleys 6% of attending populous that they command.

Get real Pal

Under Cotteril before our first soiree to the Premier League Burnely were averaging little over 12,000 and last time we were in the third tier barring the promotion season we averaged just over 10,000

The mighty Fleetwood with a population of around 25,000 and about a third of ours are averaging over 3,000 fans in the third tier. Like for like Fleetwoods support by your logic just about matches up to Burnley and i'd bet you anything if they got in the Premier League their % of support to population would surpass Burnely

Are Fleetwood a massive club with massive support? No there just a small place that has a relatively successful football club a bit like us. This % of population thing is just a sad obsession Burnley fans hold and means absolutely nothing to the rest of the football world

This % of population thing is part of our identity and a source of pride. Not all aspects of supporting a football club are logical and rational.

Thats a fair perspective and wouldnt argue against that view if others didnt band it around like it was the holy bible of football and use it to arrogantly dismiss and snide at other like minded clubs and fans

Ive only got in this discussion because people keep ramming this view down some of our throats just for suggesting Leeds is decent club with good support from a proper footballing city

I live and work amongst Leeds fans and take great delight in telling them how big their extension to Elland Road would have to be to get to '% of population'* parity. Once they've acknowledged our superiority in that regard, and only when that has happened, do we move on to discussing why they are so entitled and obnoxious. You're missing out on one of life's simple pleasures DA.

*subject to a minimum population of 65,000

Replace the word Leeds with Newcastle and you'll have a point....
