Half time and Tunisia are drawing 0-0 with Spain.

Spain majority of possession but three good chances for Tunisia.

Despite their precious abject WC performances they have dramatically improved over 12 months.

No way a guaranteed 3 points.

Or Spain are in poor form?

I agree an on form Spain would blow them away.

Tunisia do look well organised and difficult to break down.

Will watch second half

I’m watching France vs USA.

1-0 to the States at the minute and France were very much in form coming into this game.

Anything can happen in football, we’ve seen stranger things happen than this England squad winning the tournament.

Slim chance, but you can only back the lads and hope for some luck.

Just don’t see the point in being morbid about our chances.

Approach it like supporting the Clarets. Get behind them and hope for miracles.

Superb result for the USA. Ended 1-1, but they started the game with an 11 that had a combined total of 6 caps.

MOTM: Cameron Carter-Vickers (Tottenham), looks a real player, solid centre half.

Why do you think that, when the history of England at the World Cup suggests we will get knocked out by the first decent team we come up against?

Easily achievable and our current odds of 16/1 are a licence to print money by laying them as soon as they are out the (easy) group they/we are in.

I'm not looking at it from an angle, I just think getting to the quarters would be a good tournament for us.

I'll be enjoying it anyway, even if this boards....... 'look at me and how much I don't care for England' lot won't be.

Same Stan, ultimately we will be found wanting but I think these young lads will give it a go, that's all we can expect.

To win the world cup you need at least some world-class players

sorry boatshed, but that doesn't mean anything, by virtue of playing on a world stage one could argue the players of at that stage, I know what you mean generally, but it is a loose term that is hard to define. Would Maradona's team mates count, they were ultimately world champions, but only he had the status as a world class player.
I know ronaldo, bale, messi and neymar and a host of others are regarded as "world class" but it is a team game, and as Burnley proved, it doesnt necessarily require great individual performances, just a genuine TEAM ethic to succeed.

Was Geoff Hurst world class prior to the 66 world cup? Most had him down as a reserve.

Geoff Hurst never was world class but Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore and Gordan Banks were.

And that could be the case of our 'class of 2018'. They have an opportunity to make themselves legends like Hurst. IMO we've as good a chance as at any time since 66. I never went in for all that golden generation ********.

Yes of course, they didn't just become great players in the World Cup finals. Compare them to Butland, Jones, Henderson etc, in their positions, there is no comparison whatsoever.

I think you say that with hindsight. Doubt anyone felt they were world class before winning the world cup.

I know what you're saying. I guess it is a fairly loose term , regarding world class players I think we know one when we see one.

Wecoyote, you are right when you say Burnley used a team ethic to succeed, we succeeded in finishing a fantastic 7th. The team that finished 1st had world class players and a team ethic.

England had one player prior to 66 everyone felt would be world class.. Duncan Edwards.. At the time of his death, nobody felt bobby Charlton was a world beater too..

Duncan Edwards died in 1958 as a very young man, that's 8 years before the World Cup and has no bearing on my earlier posts.

Ordinary players can win the World Cup if they are fortunate enough to play in a team with someone as exceptional as Maradona. Sadly, England have never had such a player, and certainly don’t this time around.

The point I'm making is the world cup established these players reputations on the world stage, and our lads of 2018 have that same opportunity.

Think some of our players get underated unbelievably.. Sterling for example is played, successfully, for his club by the manager acknowledged as the best in world football.. But he's not good enough for england.. Apparently..

Interesting that you bring up Sterling.
Good enough for England, but in my opinion not as good as Sane who isn't good enough for Germany.

Not really the point though, is it?
If scoring goals was the criteria by which "world-class" was judged there would be no world-class defenders!
