BBC reported 2-Jul-2018: Obama adviser on how Cameron asked for Brexit warning

Former White House adviser Ben Rhodes has told BBC Radio 5 live that David Cameron asked President Obama to say that Brexit would mean Britain being “at the back of the queue.”

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live’s Anna Foster, Ben Rhodes explained the story of how the warning came about.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-4468853 ... it-warning" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Pretty full report also available on Sky News site: Cameron 'personally requested Obama's back of the queue Brexit warning'

https://news.sky.com/story/cameron-pers ... g-11423669" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Personally, I wouldn't say that Obama was "lying" - just making a "politically motivated statement" - no different from any other politician.

The issue is that Obama's statement was made during a referendum period - thus seeking to influence the votes of the electorate in another democracy. I think we should all "frown on" that sort of actions.
I have a problem with Cameron asking for it, but not with Obama for saying it. Vote Leave had been making all kinds of claims about America. I have absolutely no problem with America coming out and saying their claims are bullshit. And it'll kind of embarrassing that so many people are OK with Vote Leave making **** up without knowing America's actual position, yet getting all upset when America corrects them.

So you're saying that every time Obama said anything about a time in the future when he wasn't president of the US it was a lie?
Jesus Christ.

He even said that it was only what he "thinks" the United States is going to do.

“They are voicing an opinion about what the United States is going to do, I figured you might want to hear from the president of the United States what I think the United States is going to do."

So not only was he not lying, he explicitly states that he is expressing an opinion.

It's incredible to me that your problem isn't with the Leave campaigners who told you these incorrect things, but you have a problem with them being corrected. It's ridiculous.
What are you even on about?

Obama only got involved in Brexit because of leave voters. What?

You didn't even got close to addressing the point I was making, Obama was trying to influence a democratic vote, Trump isn't doing that.

Are you saying that when you claim it wasn't a lie, it's a FACT? Or, Is it just your OPINION? And how does today's statements by Trump and May clearly prove we're not at the back of the queue when it comes to trade deals?

You should've listened to quickenthetempo when he tried to explain -

You've fundamentally misunderstood the debate, and then called me not very smart. lol
The debate was "Did Obama lie?" He didn't. He expressed an opinion. He explicitly said he was expressing an opinion. It doesn't matter what you think of someone's opinion, an opinion cannot be a lie. But hey, i'm not very smart so maybe i've misunderstood what an 'opinion' is. Perhaps you'd like to explain to me how an opinion can be a lie.

Yes, Obama had a right to get involved because Leave campaigners involved the country he was the leader of. They made claims about America and he had every right to dispute those claims. Why do you have a problem with dishonest claims, or claims not supported by fact, being contested?

You're right, i'm not very smart. But i'm right a whole lot more often than you and the people you support. I value facts where you appear to hold them in no regard. So what does that say about how smart you are?

Fair enough. I differ: Cameron should not have asked Obama to interfere in the referendum campaign - and Obama should not have commented.

Both sides in the referendum campaign made "all sorts of claims" about all sorts of things, It's politics, nothing more - and often very much less.

The principle should be politicians in 3rd countries should not get involved with the democratic process involving another country.

And, I'm ok with whatever politicians in UK say during an election campaign, so long as I'm free to "take it with a pinch of salt" and look for my own evidence of who I might choose to favour.

I would agree with you that Obama shouldn't have commented if the Leave campaign hadn't started talking about how easy it would be to leave the EU and hash out a trade agreement with the US. But they brought America into the campaign when they did that and the American president has every right to correct them.

Why do you think differently? Why do you think that Vote Leave should be allowed to make claims about other countries but those other countries shouldn't respond to their claims if they think they're wrong? I'm not asking rhetorically. I want you to explain this to me.

The thread title doesn't say 'Did Obama lie?' it says 'Trump destroys Mays soft Brexit..'

You have trouble with reading as well as counting?

Show me in this thread where I said anything about Obama lying.

You quoted my point (which you still haven't come close to addressing btw) about Obama meddling during the referendum but now there's no referendum for Trump to meddle in.

Now you're lecturing me about things other people have said and telling me what my opinions are based on nothing.

It's just bizarre gibberish.

OK, so why should country X avoid getting involved in the democratic process of country Y?

First reason is to respect the electorate of country Y. Whether it is "self-determination," a country choosing to move away from being a colony of another country, or the desire of east european states to escape from the control of Moscow/USSR/Russia - and we can all add many more examples.

Second reason is by avoiding "taking sides" the new government of country Y has a better chance of good relations with country X if they have been neutral in the electoral process. After all, good international relations are one of the things that the world needs.

So, it's a general principle, support the demoicratic process but don't take sides.

So, the leave campaign - or let's say it's any side in another political campaign - makes a claim that relates to country X. There's no specific need for country X to respond - and no reason for the current political leader to state an opinion about what might or moght not happen in the future in a way that might be felt to influence the political campaign.

I'd have had no concerns if Obama had said something like, "in my opinion........ or, my advice to US government would be...…. or, in previous situations the precedent was.... . Becasue all these are pretty neutral statements.

But, there were lots of categoric statements from non-UK politicians would should have stayed out of the campaigns. Who knows, if they had done maybe the situation today would have been a lot less fractious and uncertain.

What are you even on about? The debate i was having with Quickenthetempo was over his accusation that Obama lied. Other people piled on, including you. If you piled on not understanding the debate that was going on between Quicken and I then that's your own fault.

As for not addressing your point, of course i did. You just didn't like how I addressed, and have no way to respond to it with a logic-based counter because you and I both know that if a campaign is making presumptuous statements about you then you have every right to correct their presumptions.

If you have a problem with Obama expressing his opinion about what the United States would do if the UK leave the EU then Vote Leave shouldn't have expressed their opinion on what the United States would do. They brought the US into the debate. Direct your ire at them. (but you can't, because you like them and you're far too emotionally invested to look at this objectively)

You try again you cretinous idiot
Erm. Being wrong doesn't necessarily mean you're lying. 2000 years ago the Church weren't lying when they said the Earth was the centre of the universe, they were wrong. 1,000 years ago when people thought witches existed they weren't lying, they were wrong. And today when people think the holocaust was a hoax they're not lying, they're just wrong.

I'm sorry our education system didn't adequately prepare you for the real world where not everything that is wrong is a lie. My taxes have failed you.

I was replying to LancasterClaret about a post I made, he didn't quote me and tempo pointed that out. Nowt to do with you. Again, I never said anything about Obama lying.
As for not addressing your point, of course i did. You just didn't like how I addressed, and have no way to respond to it with a logic-based counter because you and I both know that if a campaign is making presumptuous statements about you then you have every right to correct their presumptions.
No you didn't.
I don't have a problem with it.

Stop spinning your tyres. Take that chill pill we talked about. Go outside, it's nice.

When Obama claimed we'd go to back of the queue, he knew it was BS, Cameron knew it was BS. And most sane people knew it was BS.

The statements by Trump and May clearly prove it was BS.

Or did I miss the bit of todays trump speach where he said" my predecessor was right. As I've explained to Prime minister May, unfortunately we'd like to agree a trade deal but there are many more countries ahead of the UK in the queue"?

Have you got the transcript to back up your opinon Marty !?

Stop your usual ploy of muddying the waters. Whining on about opinions in the future and past. You just sound desperate.

BS is BS. And your full of it!

You can’t have any evidence of this being the case Wrongo, it’s in the future. No one knows if there’ll be a trade deal between the U.K. and the U.S. Come on Wrongo, you must remember how your own argument goes!

Just listened to the full 1 hr press conference due to not working today. Entertaining stuff. Abiding thoughts:

1. May gives her stock 20 second answer to each question, word for word (e.g. we will stop sending VAST sums of money to EU). Trump talks for ages, honestly giving his view on each issue (and it does seem honest).

2. Trump complained about Germany getting most of its energy from Russia due to the new pipeline. I think he is right (he could also have referenced the UK selling many of its assets to Russia or China, same argument). May just sat on the fence and waffled.

3. Trump talked at length about immigration damaging the culture of Europe (I think he means excess immigration). Again, I think he is right as long as it is about excessive levels. May just waffled for 20 seconds.

All in all, I liked what he had to say.

I've checked. I can't see a point you made to me that i haven't addressed. Would you like to point it out to me so that I can address it (again)?

You know. The one where Trump says "my predecessor was right. As I've explained to Prime minister May, unfortunately we'd like to agree a trade deal but there are many more countries ahead of the UK in the queue. He wasn't lying, he's a great guy"?

Waiting Marty!!!!

Shhhh it's that rare beast!

We see more of David Cameron than you Bordeaux!

Bet Danny Dyer would describe you in a very similar way to the aforementioned reclusive former PM!

I'd have to agree with him though!

*We interrupt regular broadcasting to bring you this special announcement.*

DAG Rod Rosenstein has scheduled a press conference due to start imminently regarding a "law enforcement announcement". Could be anything really, but it's unusual so be on the look-out for incoherent and rage-filled Trump tweets in the immediate future.

*This has been a special announcement*

Again, I ask you.

Knowing they're spouting falsehoods, are they peddling lies or an opinion?

Lies or opinion?

In a word.......

It doesn't matter if i know they're spouting falsehoods. What matters, in the question of whether they're lying or not, is whether they know they're spouting falsehoods or not.

Epic point miss! In order to avoid a simple one word answer!

It's not if you know they're wrong, it's if they know they're wrong having being proven time and time again, you intelligence lacking chimp! And they continue to peddle the same views!

Are they peddling lies or an opinion?
