Fifty years ago we descended on Deepdale and clinched the Second Division title

Since I was too young to attend games in 1960 and only really started going on games in 1966, that evening at Deepdale was the happiest day I had enjoyed as Claret. It was a fantastic occasion, not spoilt one bit by both teams sitting back for the final quarter of the game to allow each other the point they both needed! (It was a lot more tense final few minutes on Tuesday!)
It's remarkable that our victory at Ewood was 50 years to the day, and also remarkable that we've now won the Championship at Deepdale and Ewood, but not at Turf Moor!

Happy memories of two wonderful events. BTW the photo on the York articles is surely of the equalising goal, when Dean Kiely kicked Deary and there was a scuffle in the net, not JF's winner as caption says?

1973 was the first time I saw us win anything. Superb season.

The York win was a huge relief ending those seven long years.

That day at Deepdale in 1973 also remains as one of my favourites. I'm somewhere on that picture showing Dobbo lead the team out but it's so crowded I cannot find myself. The run- in that season seemed very hectic. Our game on Apr. 7th was postponed because Sunderland were in the semi final of the FA Cup and so from April 14th( Huddersfield away) when I returned for Easter from my final year in London I think we had 6 games in a fortnight including a game away at Oxford on Good Friday followed by another at home the following day v Brighton.
It was the beginning of a relatively short but very enjoyable time to be a Claret.

Painter he kicked, Deary had him by the throat in the net sorting him out.

The days of playing on successive days. Imagine if they tried that now.

Yes, six games in two weeks to end the season with five won and the goal at Preston the only one conceded.

Remember leaving the Manor Ground after the match on Good Friday and the Carlisle United team were getting on their bus having presumably watched the game. They played the following day at Oxford.

I can't remember why now but we stayed down after that game and were then rushing back on the Saturday for the Brighton game on the following afternoon.

Yes, great memories of both occasions.
Where we were stood at Preston, it was like looking over Colin Waldrons shoulder when he hit that wonderful goal.

And York was equally brilliant, in our thousands, SJF hanging on the fence, the Old Bill blocking all roads into Skipton on the way back (we only wanted a pint).

Games like that live with you forever.

We spoke about that coming back from Middlesbrough recently. It was like that every time we travelled that way back in the late 80s and early 90s be it York, Darlington, Hartlepool or Scarborough. The coaches used to be give a full police escort right up to the Lancashire boundary at Earby.
