1516 burnley scott arfield 00 630x420Scott Arfield made his debut for Canada last night in a 3-0 home defeat against Mexico in a World Cup qualifier taking the total number of full internationals at Burnley to ten.

He was introduced as a half time substitute with the Canadians already 2-0 down, coming on for Tosaint Ricketts who is currently without a club but most recently played for Boluspor in Turkey.

Canada will now move on to Mexico to face the same opposition at Estadio Azteca, where that brilliant Brazil team won the 1970 World Cup and where Diego Maradona thought it acceptable to knock a ball into the net with his hand 16 years later.

Arfield is not the only Burnley player to have won a cap this week. Sam Vokes was in the Wales side that drew 1-1 with Northern Ireland in Cardiff on Thursday. He played the first 76 minutes before being replaced by Simon Church, and that was two minutes after Danny Lafferty had replaced Jonny Evans for Northern Ireland. It was a 38th cap for Vokes with Lafferty representing his country for a 13th time.

We’ve ten full internationals now at Burnley. Arfield, Vokes and Lafferty can be added to Joey Barton (England), George Boyd (Scotland), Michael Duff (Northern Ireland), Matt Gilks (Scotland),Paul Robinson (England), Fredrik Ulvestad (Norway) and Stephen Ward (Republic of Ireland).
