Burnley recovered from last week’s defeat against Newcastle United with a 2-0 win this afternoon against Swansea City in the Premier League Cup.

1718 burnley ntumba massanka 00 500x500The result takes us level with Newcastle in Group D. Both of us have nine points from four games with Swansea in third place with three points from three games and Colchester still searching for their first point having also played three times.

Burnley showed just three changes from the team beaten by Newcastle. Conor Mitchell, having served his suspension, was in goal for Adam Legzdins, Aiden O’Neill took the central midfield position from Rahis Nabi while Brad Jackson, who has been on loan at Southport, was on the left instead of Tinashe Chakwana.

Both goals came in the first half. Dwight McNeil scored the first on 20 minutes with a superb strike from outside the box having been set up by Christian N’Guessan. Ntumba Massanka (pictured) then saw a header disallowed for offside but quickly made it 2-0 who scored after being played in by McNeil.

We had some defending to do in the latter stages but Mitchell, other than a couple of saves, was hardly troubled and then sets us up nicely for the last two games.

The home game against Swansea is on 26th February at Curzon Ashton and that will be our last group game. Prior to that, we play Colchester at their own Weston Homes Stadium on Friday 9th February.

Today’s teams were;

Swansea: Lewis Thomas, Connor Roberts, Matic Paljk, Jay Fulton, Cian Harries, Joe Rodon (Capt), Leon Britton, Daniel James, Botti Biabi, Adnan Marić, Jordon Garrick. Subs: Liam Cullen, Steven Benda, Adam King, Marco Dulca, Brandon Cooper.

Burnley: Conor Mitchell, Arlen Birch, Oliver Younger, Scott Wilson, Ali Koiki, Tunde Bayode, Christian N’Guessan, Aiden O’Neill, Brad Jackson, Dwight McNeil (Tommy Wood 90+4), Ntumba Massanka (Rahis Nabi 90+4). Subs not used: Aidan Stone, James Clarke, Tinashe Chakwana.
