Canada got off to a winning start in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 4-2 win against French Guiana with Scott Arfield scoring his first goal for his adopted country.

1516 burnley scott arfield 00 630x420All of the Canadian goalscorers were grabbing their first goals. In the first half both Dejan Jakovic and Arfield scored with Alphonso Davies scoring twice in the second half.

The Burnley midfielder played his part in the first goal. He took a free kick on the right hand side. Goalkeeper Donovan Leon could only knock the ball away to Jakovic who pushed it in off his body.

Arfield’s big moment came just before half time with Canada already leading 1-0. He attempted a through ball to Lucas Cavallini only to have the ball deflected back into his path. Arfield collected the ball and fired a low short. The French Guiana goalkeeper got a hand to it but couldn’t keep it out.

The game was played in Harrison, New Jersey and Canada now move on to Texas for their remaining two group games. The first, against , will be played on Tuesday in Houston with the final group game against Honduras in Frisco next Friday.

The win was Canada’s first in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in six years. This victory ended a run of seven games without victory (4 draws and 3 losses) since they last won in 2011, beating Guadeloupe 1-0.
