1516 burnley matt gilks 00 630x420On the day that Tom Heaton left Burnley, Matt Gilks, one of his Turf Moor understudies, has moved from Scunthorpe United to Fleetwood Town on a one year deal.

Gilks was with us for two years from 2014 to 2016 but never played a league game due to the consistency of Heaton and his only action for Burnley came in two 1-0 League Cup defeats, at home against Sheffield Wednesday in 2014 and at Port Vale a year later.

He’d previously played for Rochdale, Blackpool and Shrewsbury, playing Premier League football with Blackpool, but left Burnley in the summer of 2016 to move up to Glasgow with Joey Barton and sign for Rangers.

That lasted for only half a season, and again without a league appearance, before he moved to Wigan in January 2017 until the end of that season. Two years at Scunthorpe have followed. He was a regular in his first season but in 2018/19 had to move to Lincoln on loan to get any first team football.

He’s now moved to Fleetwood for the next season, joining up with Barton for a third time and the Fleetwood boss said on completing the signing: “We’re really pleased to see Matt sign with us for the upcoming season. He brings an incredible level of experience to the goalkeeping department, and will provide serious competition for the number one shirt along with Alex Cairns and Billy Crellin.

“He’s a great character and fits well into our ever growing culture at the football club so, for us, it’s a great fit.”
