1718 burnley michael fowler 00 500x500Just a year ago Michael Fowler scored our only goal in a 4-1 home defeat against Watford in the Clarets’ first ever fixture in the U18 Professional Development League and today he scored our first goal of the season again but this time it proved to be the winner against Charlton Athletic.

It was a fully deserved 1-0 win for the Clarets too with the goal coming in the 32nd minute when 2018/19 youth team captain Fowler (pictured) latched on to a long clearance from goalkeeper Harry Allen to expertly lift the ball over the advancing Charlton goalkeeper with no defender able to get back to prevent it dropping into the net.

It was a good goal in what had been a very good opening to the game. Charlton, who might have scored in the very first minute but for a double save from Allen, were tough opponents but it was us who had the better chances with Rhys Fenlon, Fowler himself and Terry Mupariwa all going close before the goal.

We might have had another goal too just before the break but we had to settle for a 1-0 half time lead and there were few occasions during a tight second half when that looked as though it would change.

It really was a tight affair with very few opportunities and, in the end, we saw the game out comfortably.

The Burnley team was: Harry Allen, Kane Patterson, Udoka Chimna, Richard Taylor, Matty Rain, Rhys Fenlon (Mitchell George 55), Kian Yari, Ethan Kershaw, Kai Smith, Terry Mupariwa, Michael Fowler (Matty O’Neill 80). Subs not used: Adam Bruce, Edon Pruti, Dan Moss.
