Ben Mee collected a number of player of the year awards at tonight’s Supporters Clubs Player of the Year Evening, battling Joey Barton for the top award. The other big winners were Scott Arfield for his goals, and one in particular, and Willie Irvine who won this year’s special award.

The James Hargreaves Suite was packed as supporters clutched shirts, balls and books to get signed by the players for at least an hour before the evening got underway with manager Sean Dyche arriving a little later than usual due to a meeting in Manchester and I think we all know what that was about.

All the award winners are listed below but the main three went to Irvine, Arfield and Mee.

Irvine was the recipient of the special award, this coming fifty years after he set a new post-war goalscoring record at the club. The current players, manager and staff led the standing ovation for him and on accepting the award told Andre Gray to beat it, that fifty years was long enough.

The goal of the season award was voted for on the night and I don’t think it was much of a surprise that it was won by Scott Arfield for his goal at Ewood Park last October. It was a good goal but there is no doubt it is where the goal is scored that counts with Burnley fans.

For the first time, an online vote carried out a couple of weeks ago determined the winner of the player of the year. It was, in the end a close run thing with Mee coming out on top.

Former Clarets Ray Pointer and Ian Britton, both of whom have passed away this year were remembered. The MC spoke about how we always respect our former players and how we hope they go on to do well, referencing how pleased we are to see Kieran Trippier up near the top of the Premier League, our disappointment at Danny Ings suffering a serious knee injury, and our sheer delight at Jason Shackell’s deflection on Arfield’s shot in the 4-1 home win against Derby. We even had a bit of German to make Rouwen Hennings feel at home.

Sean Dyche had a few words for the audience. He said: “In my years here I’ve come to realise how important the fans are, particularly the kids. They are the future and when they are old enough to earn their own money, please come and support the Clarets on a regular basis.”
