1617 burnley scott wilson 00 400x500Last week saw the Youth Alliance Cup get underway with a new format. No longer is it a straight knock out; this season the teams have been placed in groups of four and a total of fourteen games were played over Friday and Saturday.

Half of those games saw teams from the North West league come up against teams in the North East league and it was very definitely the North West who came out on top. Although Rochdale could only draw at Lincoln, the other six ties all ended in North West wins for Bury, Carlisle, Preston, Blackpool, Morecambe and Fleetwood.

There were no big scores and the biggest wins were by just two goals and that included 2-0 wins for both Fleetwood and Morecambe. Morecambe, perennial strugglers, beat Rotherham and Fleetwood, currently pointless and bottom of the North West league beat Oldham, top of the North East,  also by the same 2-0 scoreline.

Burnley won the first of the three games, beating Accrington 1-0 as previously reported, with a goal from Scott Wilson (pictured) and Scunthorpe won 3-1 at Doncaster in the other Group 4 game.

The next round of games in the cup comes a week on Saturday and again we are on the road, this time to Doncaster while Accrington will face Scunthorpe.

It’s back to league action this weekend with Shrewsbury the visitors to Gawthorpe this Saturday morning.
