1718 burnley aiden oneill 00 500x500Burnley midfielder Aiden O’Neill who is currently on loan at League One Fleetwood Town, has been called up for the Australian Under-23 squad for the AFC Under-23 Championship next month which will be played in Jiangsu Province in China.

O’Neill is one of two English based players in the squad and that’s a player he knows well from Burnley, that player being Morecambe goalkeeper Dan Nizic who left the Clarets at the end of the 2015/16 season. Alongside them is Brandon Wilson, a former youth and development squad player. The Botswana born midfielder is back in Australia and making a name for himself with Perth Glory.

Australia have been placed in Group D and will play all of their group matches in the Kunshan Stadium in Kunshan. The first is against Syria on 11th January and they follow that up with fixture s against Vietnam an Korean Republic on Sunday 14th and Wednesday 17th January.

Australia are in the competition having won their qualifying group last July, beating Brunei, Singapore and Myanmar without conceding a goal. Both Nizic and Wilson started one of the games and were named substitutes for the other two.

Should Australia win through their group, the quarter finals will be held on 19th and 20th January, the semi-finals are both on 23rd with the final to be played on Saturday 27th January.

O’Neill’s loan to Fleetwood is for the entire 2017/18 season although the Clarets do have a recall option next month.
