Craig Pawson will referee our Premier League game against Wolves tomorrow at Molineux and it will be his first Burnley game since he took charge of our way game against Newcastle back in February.

Tomorrow will be his fifteenth Burnley game and there have undoubtedly been some controversial games among them. His first Burnley game, against Burton, wasn’t very good, but his next at Brighton, when he sent off two home players, left the home manager Gus Poyet walking out.

Home games against Millwall and Middlesbrough weren’t much better and then here was the Arsenal home game three seasons ago when they scored the stoppage time winner that could, and should, have been disallowed for any number of reasons. We haven’t seen too much of him since. He refereed just one Burnley game in the 2017/18 season, that was the season opener at Chelsea which ended in a 3-2 win alongside two red and seven yellow cards, and last season there was just the Chelsea home game to add to that fixture at Newcastle.

His only previous Premier League game this season was Brighton’s 3-0 win at Watford on the opening day. He yellow carded Brighton’s Lewis Dunk that afternoon, the only player carded. He did make up for that somewhat three days later when he was the referee for the Champions League qualifier between Ajax and PAOK Salonika. He totalled ten yellow cards in that game, three for Ajax and seven for PAOK.

He ended last season with a total of 115 yellow and seven red cards in 31 domestic games. Of those yellow cards, 57 went to home team players and 58 to away team players. His most recent red cards came in the controversial fixture between Bournemouth and Spurs when he sent off both Son Heung-min and Juan Foyth.

Alan Young is on fourth official duties tomorrow. He’s starting only his second season as a Football League referee and is still to referee higher than League One. As for Peter Bankes, it looks as if we are struggling to shake him off. He was on VAR for the Southampton game and then fourth official last week at Arsenal. He’s back with VAR tomorrow.

Tomorrow’s Officials:

Referee: Craig Pawson
Assistant Referees: Lee Betts & Ian Hussin
Fourth Official: Alan Young
VAR: Peter Bankes
AVAR: Andy Halliday
