We’ve had a German, an Italian and a Serb in the Europa League, but when we kick off our Premier League season tomorrow the referee will be Graham Scott from Oxfordshire.

It will be just his 12th Burnley game but only his third in the Premier League. He first refereed us in the top flight in the 1-1 home draw against Aston Villa in November 2014 which was his first ever Premier League game, and more recently he was the man in charge when Sunderland were beaten 4-1 at the Turf at the end of 2016.

He had a disappointing night on that first occasion in which there were seven yellow cards. That was no surprise for a referee who had already developed a reputation as one of the heavier users of red and yellow cards. However, that’s changed more recently and last season he showed just 80 yellow and five red cards in a total of 30 games.

Of those yellow cards, 33 went to home team players and 47 to away team players. Two of the players he sent off were in Premier League games. Back in August last year he dismissed Watford’s Miguel Britos in their 0-0 home draw against Brighton and in May he sent off Arsenal’s Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos in a 3-1 loss at Leicester.

Scott might not have refereed us in the Premier League since 2016 but he’s refereed us twice in the FA Cup. He was the man in the middle when Lincoln beat us two seasons ago and again when we went out of the competition last season at Manchester City.

One thing he won’t have to contend with tomorrow is VAR. In another FA Cup tie last season, between Chelsea and Norwich, he had something of a nightmare as the new technology was trialled. Chelsea went through on penalties with nine men after he sent off both Pedro and Alvaro Morata with simulation involved in both.

Now an experienced Premier League, we can hope that he gets his 2018/19 season off to a good and fair start.

The assistant referees are Constantine Hatzidakis (Kent) and Dan Cook (Hampshire). The fourth official is Lee Probert (Wiltshire) who refereed this fixture last season.
