South on top as youth league kicks off
The Under18 Professional Development League got underway last Saturday with five fixtures and it was very much a case of the South Group drawing first blood on the opening day.
All of the games were North v South with our southern counterparts winning three of them and the other two draws despite the fact that the northern clubs were at home in every game.
As we know, in our first ever game at this level, we were beaten 4-1 at Gawthorpe by Watford in a game that saw Michael Fowler (pictured) score our first ever goal in the competition although it was nothing more than a consolation after Danny Cadamarteri’s young team had gone four behind.
We weren’t the only home losers. London neighbours Charlton and Millwall both travelled north to record victories; Millwall won 3-1 at Birmingham while Charlton were 3-2 winners at Leeds.
Hull and Sheffield Wednesday took the plaudits from our group with both securing home draws. Hull drew 2-2 against Cardiff, our next opponents, and Wednesday were held to a 1-1 draw by Crystal Palace.
The league tables have been updated for the first time but, as yet, no two teams from the same group have met.
There was another game originally scheduled, that between Bolton and QPR, but it will now be played on a Tuesday next month.
The North/South divide continues this week. There’s one game this afternoon and a full fixture list of ten games this Saturday with all of them featuring clashes between teams from the two different groups.
