Burnley are at Stamford Bridge tomorrow for the first away league game of the season and Mark Clattenburg, who refereed the recent Euro 2016 final in Paris, will be the man in charge.

It’s the first time he’s refereed us since Boxing Day at Hull. He wasn’t so bad that day but the home game against Hull in the previous season, when he waved ten yellow cards, was very much one of his attention seeking nightmares, coming soon after he’d been disciplined for leaving a ground ahead of schedule to see Ed Sheeran in concert.

Clattenburg though is, without doubt, one of our best referees. When he has a good day, as he did soon after that when we played Southampton, he looks a very good referee and that’s why he gets so many top games both domestically and in Europe which, of course, enables him to go collecting tattoos of the trophies.

Tomorrow will be the 16th time he’s refereed us. The first was back in 2001 against Crystal Palace when he had a very poor game but it is testimony to his overall performances that he currently sits third in the Select Group Rate The Ref table with an overall rating of 76.26 out of 100 from ten qualifying games, behind only Neil Swarbrick, who has refereed us just once, and Mike Dean.

He ended last season refereeing the FA Cup Final and the Champions League Final besides four games in the Euros with that final but at the beginning of May, on his last visit to Chelsea, had an amazing night. He issued no fewer than twelve yellow cards, nine of them to Spurs players as the visitors lost the plot as well as any hope winning the title.

Tomorrow will be just a second game this season for Clattenburg. His first was the 0-0 draw between Leicester and Arsenal. Leicester’s Nampalys Mendy received a yellow card as did both Rob Holding and Francis Coquelin of Arsenal.

The assistant referees are Richard West (East Riding) and Simon Bennett (Staffordshire). The fourth official is Stuart Attwell (Nuneaton), returning to the Select Group this season, who last refereed us at QPR in December last year.
