Five away winners as Alliance gets underway
Besides Burnley, there were away wins for Bury, Port Vale, Rochdale and Walsall on the opening day of the Youth Alliance League, but it was a home defeat for last season’s champions Wigan Athletic to kick off the new season.
Last season saw, in the end, a repeat of the two horse race we’d seen between Bury and Wigan a year earlier. Bury came out on top in 2015 with Wigan winning the league last season. It’s Bury who have made the better start of the two although I’m not sure, given the fact that they were playing perennial bottom club Morecambe, anyone expected anything but a win for the Shakers.
Wigan though fell to defeat at Walsall, a club who are always strong at this level, while Rochdale, who had an uncharacteristic disappointing 2015/16, had the biggest win of the lot in beating Wrexham 4-1.
Port Vale at Tranmere and, as we reported three days ago, Burnley at Fleetwood also recorded wins on the road making it a poor start for the home teams.
Only Preston, against Carlisle, came out with anything from a home start; they picked up a point after a goalless affair.
Three teams, Accrington, Blackpool and Shrewsbury, are all still waiting for their first game and that continues with them all without a game again this weekend when Burnley face Tranmere in our first home game of the season.
The first results, this week’s fixtures, Burnley’s goalscorers and the current league table are all shown below.
