1516 burnley michael kightly 00 630x420Back in mid-July, we reported that former Claret Michael Kightly was sent to retire from playing having spent the last two seasons with Southend United, his first club.

That information in Kights set to fly away came from the Southend Echo and today that’s all been confirmed with the 33-year-old finally announcing the news.

Kights, who spent most of the 2013/14 season on loan from Stoke before signing a three year deal with us, said: “It’s been a great career but one that has been tough physically, and it’s been tough mentally as well, more so in the last couple of years.

It wasn’t that difficult a decision to make. I thought about it in the summer and then I came back to pre-season and thought the time was right for me.”

He still had a year remaining on his contract at Southend, but added: “It’s frustrating when your legs can’t do what they used to do, and I probably could play on for another year, or a couple of years, but I don’t see the point to be honest.

“I was lucky enough to fulfil my dream of playing in the Premier League so I’m really proud at all that I achieved.”
