Burnley’s 2015/16 home programme ended with Jon Moss refereeing the promotion winning 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers, and tomorrow he returns to Turf Moor to blow the first whistle and get our Premier League season underway.

It’s not often you will find a referee taking charge of successive home games at a club but it is almost fifteen weeks since that promotion clincher and I certainly had no argument with his last act that afternoon, to blow that final whistle to signal that, once again, we are a Premier League club.

That occasion was on 2nd May, exactly one year after to the day that he’d wrongly sent off Michael Duff and in doing so all but condemned us to relegation when that game at West Ham was lost 1-0 after we’d battled for so long with ten men.

He won’t have too far to travel tomorrow. Moss is from Horsforth in West Yorkshire but is actually Sunderland born and bred and was a player with them at youth level and he also had a spell with Millwall.

He’s starting his twelfth season in the Football League and it is now over five years since he was given his first Premier League game; that was Birmingham v Blackpool in January 2011.

Duff is not the only Burnley player he’s sent off. He dismissed Richard Eckersley, somewhat harshly, in a League Cup tie at Hartlepool, this for two yellows, and got it completely wrong when he sent off Marvin Bartley at Nottingham Forest as Billy Davies and some of his players appallingly pressured him.

Of the 18 Select Group officials, he is bottom in RATE THE REF with a rating of 53.97 out of 100; that’s over 11 games since the feature started.

Last season he refereed a total of 33 games in which there were 97 yellow cards and seven red cards. Of the yellows, 44 went to home team players and 53 to away team players. The last player he sent off, and rightly so, was Leicester’s Jamie Vardy in their 2-2 draw against West Ham when, overall, he had a disappointing afternoon.

His last game was the very last game of last season’s Premier League, the delayed Manchester United v Bournemouth game which ended 3-1 in United’s favour.  Juan Mata (Man Utd) was the only player carded in the game.

The assistant referees are Mick McDonough (Northumberland) and Andy Halliday (Northumberland). The fourth official is Anthony Taylor (Wythenshawe) whose last Burnley first team game was our home defeat against Leicester in April 2015 although he did recently referee the development squad friendly at Altrincham.
