1718 burnley aaron lennon 02 500x500Following this afternoon’s news that we’d completed the signing of Aaron Lennon from Everton, I spoke briefly to John from The Toffee Blues to ask about a player who it seems, given some of the comments I’ve seen on social media, has generated a lot of affection among the Everton fans.

“There is a real affection towards Aaron from Everton fans, yes,” he told me. “Everybody understands he’s gone through some difficult personal problems of course and that is very sad to see, but to see where he has been for the last six months or so considering what had happened to him, it was amazing to see him make that recovery.

“There was a lot of love towards him because of the effort he puts in for the team as well. His tracking back and defensive side has been superb every time he was playing.

“I personally feel it is the right time for him to move on. With his contract up I thought it wouldn’t be a smart move for Everton to give him a new contract.”

John added: “While I have said the positive points to his game, there is a negative in that his attacking threat isn’t as great as it used to be. At the start of his Everton career, the six month loan, he scored a good amount of goals in that time and I think everybody was expecting him to pop up with more goal than he has.

“Everton have other wingers in Walcott, Bolasie, Lookman, Vlasic, even Sigurdsson has been getting pushed out on to the wing, so we do have a lot of options there so it’s the best for both parties really.

“Burnley is a great club for him to go to as well and I’m looking forward to see how he does for you.”

I’d like to thank John from The Toffee Blues / @EvertonNewsFeed for taking time out to speak to Up the Clarets today.
