Bardsley makes his mark on Turf Moor return
Phil Bardsley made his first Turf Moor appearance in our colours for the first time since a 1-0 win against QPR in April 2006 when he lined up against Leeds in last week’s League Cup tie.
He’d played in the previous round against League One Blackburn at Ewood Park. He played well in that one but was even better against Leeds where he won both the man of the match vote and the player ratings.
Sean Dyche had made seven changes and it was two of the players coming in who took the honours with Bardsley claiming 25% of the vote to be named man of the match, ahead of Ashley Westwood who won 14%. Robbie Brady took third place with 11% while fourth place went to captain on the night James Tarkowski who won a 10% share of the vote.
It was the same top two in the player ratings, and they were close, Bardsley winning it with 7.19 out of 10, ahead of Westwood who was narrowly behind with a rating of 7.12. Jack Cork, who came on as a substitute at the start of extra time, was third with a rating of 6.81 while wide men Brady and Johann Berg Gudmundsson shared fourth place, both had ratings of 6.62 out of 10.
That result has given Bardsley ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year with Westwood winning six points, Brady collecting three points, Cork getting two points and one point each for Gudmundsson and Tarkowski.
Cork, in the lead, and second place Tarkowski now have a substantial lead at the top of the table. They are separated by four points with third place Steven Defour a further twelve points behind although I suspect that gap will be narrowed this week with the Huddersfield result.
